It is a magical place to discover on foot, from rugged cliffs to golden beaches, small villages, green pastures, peat bogs and always picturesque mountain ranges in sight. Hiking the Kerry Way allows you to see the “real” Ireland, away from crowds and only the sounds of nature to accompany you. This area was first settled around 300 BC by the people of Ciar – an early Celtic Tribe, and your holiday will immerse you in almost 10,000 years of dramatic history. Come and discover this region of Kerry known as the Iveragh Peninsula or more famously “The Ring of Kerry” & you will wonder why it has taken you so long to discover such an idyllic part of the world. This holiday begins & ends in Killarney and takes you to the eastern highlights of this trail. DAY 1, HIKE ARRIVE IN KILLARNEY Arrive in Killarney – the popular town renowned for its three magnificent lakes in the heart of Kerry. On arrival at your first guesthouse, your host/ hostess will give you your detailed information pack. They will also be able to suggest some of the many local restaurants or pubs for food and possibly music. Access for this holiday can be from Dublin, Cork or Shannon Airports with bus and/or train connections available to Killarney all year round. DAY 2, HIKE KILLARNEY TO KENMARE You will be transferred to the start of your hike at the magnificent Muckross House & Gardens - about 5km outside Killarney. From here you will start following the Kerry Way past Torc Waterfall, across Killarney National Park & through Esknamucky Glen to the heritage town of Kenmare. This is a glorious hike, giving you an opportunity to see or hear some of Ireland’s native red deer as you hike through the National Park. Overnight in Kenmare. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 20.0km | Height gain - 689m | Height loss -710m | Max Height - 321 m | Min Height - 9m. Terrain: Mountain tracks, board walks and green roads. Can be wet underfoot – boots essential. DAY 3, HIKE TEMPLENOE TO SNEEM A taxi will transfer you from Kenmare to the start of your hike at the little village of Templenoe. From here, you follow the Kerry Way west to the award winning village of Sneem. This hike takes you along the shores of Kenmare Bay, with views south to the Beara Peninsula and the Caha Mountains. Overnight in Sneem. Walk Details: Distance: 19.90kms. Approx. Max. Height: 300m. Forest tracks, some road walking, mountain tracks and country lanes. Boots essential. DAY 4, HIKE SNEEM TO CAHERDANIEL Continue hiking from the village of Sneem, following an old ‘butter road’ to the little village of Caherdaniel – once home of our famous "Liberator" – Daniel O’Connell. The views across the Beara Peninsula and out to the Atlantic Ocean are fantastic. Overnight in Caherdaniel. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 17.25km (option of 34km) | Height gain -473m | Height loss - 450m | Max Height - 195m | Min Height - 9m. Terrain: Country lanes, grass tracks, Rocky Mountains and some road walking. Boots essential. DAY 5, HIKE CAHERDANIEL TO WATERVILLE Continuing from the village of Caherdaniel, you hike around and above the coast to reach the village of Waterville. Enjoy glorious coastal views out towards the Skellig Islands and Ballinskelligs Bay. Overnight in Waterville. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 16km | Height gain - 379m | Height loss -405m | Max Height - 240m | Min Height - 0m Terrain: Rocky and grass tracks, mountain tracks and bogland and some road walking. Boots essential. DAY 6, HIKE WATERVILLE TO CAHERCIVEEN From Waterville, you will be driven a short distance to the starting point of today’s walk at Mastergeehy. From here you will be hiking along the Kerry Way in a easterly direction to the town of Caherciveen. This walk takes you across the tip of the peninsula with views north over the Dingle Peninsula and south to Kenmare Bay. Overnight in Caherciveen. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 24km | Height gain - 943m | Height loss -933m | Max Height - 362m | Min Height - 10m. Terrain: Grass mountain tracks with some rocky sections. Gravel tracks and some road walking. Boots essential. DAY 7, HIKE CAHERCIVEEN TO GLENBEIGH Today’s hike takes you from the town of Caherciveen along the northern shores of the Iveragh Peninsula to the little village of Glenbeigh. This section of the Kerry Way follows an old 17th Century “Stage Coach” route and gives spectacular views across to the Dingle Peninsula. You will pass through old deserted villages which were once busy centres of activity, trading with passengers on the old stage coaches. Overnight in Glenbeigh. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 24km | Height gain - 689m | Height loss -681m | Max Height - 330 m | Min Height - 13m. Terrain: Grass mountain tracks with some rocky sections. Gravel tracks and road walking. Boots essential. DAY 8, HIKE DEPART GLENBEIGH After your final breakfast and farewell you follow your own arrangements for your onward journey. There is a public bus service from Glenbeigh that will take you back to Killarney where you can avail of excellent train & bus services. If required, we will happily arrange a private transfer for you at a small additional cost. (Please note the bus from Glenbeigh departs at 08:05 or 12.20 and takes 50 mins to Killarney. From there a glorious hike takes you along an old Mass Path on the shores of the Upper Lake to reach Galways’ Bridge. KERRY STEP CHALLENGE Overview The national ‘In This Together’ campaign was launched by an Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to promote activity, mental wellbeing and staying connected as the population deals with the impact of COVID-19. The Kerry Step Challenge is one of the Kerry County Council initiatives launched under this campaign which is designed to promote and support wellbeing in the county. The Kerry Step Challenge is a six-week event designed to promote and support the people living in the county to stay active, connected and apply the Five Ways to Wellbeing. It involves virtually completing routes in the county by accumulating daily steps. As national COVID-19 movement restrictions are in place, participants do not visit the routes to complete the challenge. Instead, participants accumulate an equivalent number of steps that would be taken to complete each route. A total of six routes of varying distances and step counts are included in the challenge.     Ring of Kerry Itinerary THE RING OF KERRY DRIVE We've driven the Ring of Kerry a few times now and it never gets old. I may not say that in a few years when every single person who visits us in Ireland wants to do a Ring of Kerry road trip but for now, let's say visiting the Ring of Kerry is an Irish rite of passage. From Donegal, it is quite a drive and it takes us around 6 hours but we decided upon a few other stops on our road trip. We drive right through Sligo which is one of Ireland's most underappreciated counties and it is spectacular. From Yeats grave to the beautiful surfing beaches Sligo is sensational. From Sligo, we headed straight to Galway City where we stayed a couple of days to enjoy the craic and the crowds. Then from Galway, we went onto to Tralee which is where we began our Ring of Kerry epic adventure. We stopped in Tralee for some epic fish and chips at Quinlan's Seafood Bar absolutely bloody spectacular food so fresh it was practically still flapping. At Quinlan's, we also heard for the very first time a true Kerry accent which is quite a thick Irish one. The slang used in Kerry is also different than the rest of Ireland so if someone calls you a "lad" and your female that's the Kerry way.
