NEXT MEETING June 17, 2021
June 2021 greetings from your president. Please note Krista’s email regarding State Fair benching & demo assignments, and note that there are still openings. We now get over 12,000 per day people visiting our new Pet Pavilion. That is because of our beautiful dogs and wonderful people and presentations, but also because of all the new development and new vendors at the north end of the Fairgrounds. That, of course, means that we need more people to help get information out about purebred dogs. If you can bench or you can provide a demo, please contact Krista Peterson, [email protected] or contact me. The State Fair Committee will be sending information out about helping out at the info desk. It’s great fun answering the varied questions we get at the info desk and referring folks to the resources they need. Looking forward to working with you at the Fair. John Armour [email protected]
State Fair is only 2-1/2 months away
Many of you have responded to my email regarding the 2021 State Fair and there are some who have not responded. We have about 80% of the double benches booked and quite a few single benches left to book yet. If you are interested in benching, please let me know. The State Fair is asking for the schedule on or before June 21st.
Thank you for all of you who have already booked and to those who plan to help out this year. The Fair is supposed to go on this year with no restrictions so that is good news! Unless something should take a turn and then they would make adjustments accordingly. This year the fair has increased their security at the entrance gates installing metal detectors etc.
Here is the link to the sheet that show's who has booked for the fair with a few notes of people "pending" for benches and demo's. 2021 State Fair Sign Up - Google Sheets If you would like to help out with any of the openings, please let me know. Also if you booked this is a good way to make sure I have the information recorded correctly.

DOG BREEDERS FUTURE IS IN OUR PAST Sherry L. Shivley, Field Reporter-Photographer for The Dog Place.org
Have you ever really looked at your dog’s pedigree and researched the dogs that made an impact in making your dog who he or she is today?
Some dog breeds no longer do the job they were bred to do. For example, we do not see many poodles hunting and retrieving. Most Sporting breeds discovered we have sofas and refrigerators full of snacks. Why hang out with a bunch of guys all morning chasing birds when you can watch Lassie and munch on a selection of delicious fruit and veggies?
Preservationist Breeders is a new movement pushing back against the back- yard breeders and designer dogs, the “adopt don’t shop” mentality. The goal is keeping Purebreds Pure, Breeding to the Standard, and staying true to what your breed was created for.
If you have an AKC or UKC registered dog, you have a short lineage on the Registration papers. You can also order Pedigrees on your pup from your Registry.
Most breeds have a website page dedicated to keeping track of dogs and their accomplishments. It is a great way to preserve history of your breed. Because so many people are now introducing “designer” dogs into the world, it is even more important to acknowledge purebred dogs with history behind them.
We no longer need Boxers to turn the spits of meat or grind grain but they love being protective house dogs.
Mastiffs would rather nap in the sun than pull a cart of goods to market. Sighthounds chase bags around a course for fun. Ships have more efficient ways to control rodents, so they retired Schipperkes from a job they love.
Barn hunts, nose work, lure coursing, dock diving; these are just a few classes offered for dogs that may not be suitable for conformation or for owners who want to allow their dogs to enjoy themselves while getting points towards their Champion title. Some breed clubs offer carting where the dog pulls a cart through an obstacle course.
Many more Breeds have adapted over the years to a new way of life. As Preservationist Breeders it is in our best interest to continue their history as much as possible.
Preserving our dog’s history is important not only for our future but for today. In some countries many breeds are on the brink of extinction and it is nearly impossible to export to other countries.
People who had the vision of what the dog’s purpose would be and how it should look and act should be lauded. From their efforts we now have dogs for every purpose, every size, temperament and color. They wrote down what that dog should be but we may have strayed a bit over the years from the original Breed Standards. Some change for better - Some for worse.
I see us banding together as Preservationist Breeders to protect our dogs from the puppy mills that don’t care about breed type and the animal rights zealots who want to destroy animal ownership. We will teach children and adults alike that Purebred dogs are healthy, have a proven temperament, and their line has produced what families want for generations. Rescues and back yard breeders don’t have that ability.
If we don’t stop hiding from trouble, trouble will find us. It will seek us out individually until we are all gone. We cannot risk our history, our livelihood, our love of the Fancy to chance. David Frei and other leaders have spoken up for Preservationists Breeders. Will you?
Puppy Looking For Home Sits In Shelter
Smiling At Everyone Walking By1 week ago
Meet Burreaux, an adorable black labrador puppy who tried his best to smile at everyone who walked past the kennel in the hopes of getting adopted, writes kingdomstv. One day, after walking past a local animal control center, Courtney Wingate, who is the director of the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, spotted the trio of pups and knew she couldn’t leave them behind.
She took in all three pups, but it was Burreaux’s charming smile that caught her eye.
So Courtney called volunteer Sarrah Walton who came and rescued the puppies before naming them after 3 Louisiana State University Football players.
The trio were taken straight to the vet for routine checkups, and all seemed positive. Yet when they got back to the rescue center, Burreaux fell ill.
They immediately took him back to the animal hospital who treated him and helped him to make a full recovery.
After the trio were back at the rescue shelter, Sarrah began to notice that Burreaux would crack a wide smile every time someone spoke to him in a high pitched voice.
Whenever someone would call him a good boy, he would flash his tiny teeth in a huge grin. Speaking to The Dodo Sarrah said:
“It’s whenever you’re talking real sweet to him … he gets this smile like he wants something. [It’s] like he’s telling you, ‘Come pet me, come love me.’”
Once they pups were ready for adoption, the rescue decided that sharing their special talents on social media would be the best way to find them a forever home.
Joe was a natural playing fetch, he was quickly adopted after sharing a video of his skills.
For Berreuax, staff at the shelter decided to share a video of him flashing his huge adorable smile to show off his sweet nature.
[W]e were thinking, ‘Burreaux wants a home so bad that he’s always smiling, trying to cute it up’. So we took that video.
You can watch the adorable video below:
It was a hit! He went viral with over 1 million views and managed to find himself a forever home!

What is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show?
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog show is a yearly event that features nearly 3,000 dogs. Normally, it is held at the Madison Square Garden, though it will be held outdoors in Tarrytown, New York in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The show consists of dogs competing to be the best among their group. There are seven groups total, including hound, toy, non-sporting, sporting, working, herding and terrier. The best dog in each group then competes for the "Best in Show" title.
The show also includes the Masters Agility Championship and Masters Obedience Championships.
History of the Westminster Dog Show
The inaugural Westminster Dog Show was held by the Westminster Kennel Club in 1877 at Gilmore's Garden, the predecessor for Madison Square Garden. The event was originally supposed to last three days, but after 1,201 dogs entered, it ended up running one day longer. From there, it became an annual event.
The show has been held in every single year since 1877. It occurred during the Great Depression, during wartimes and during pandemic years, as it will in 2021.
The Westminster name comes from a Manhattan hotel that the group of hunters that started the kennel club met at frequently. The only sporting event that has been running longer than the Westminster Dog Show is the Kentucky Derby, which predates it by two years,
Westminster Dog Show winners
The Best in Show award has been given out yearly since 1907, 30 years after the original Westminster Dog show began in 1877. The Terrier group has won the award 47 times, the most of any group.
