Jerry Yamson was the 2nd Place Winner of the Shriners Golf Tournament raffl e this past Saturday, taking home a 55” Seiki Ultra-HD Smart TV, donated by Cost U Less. When Jerry’s name was called, he was shocked. He couldn’t believe he won, as he bought the winning raffl e ticket the same morning of the golf tournament. Shriners Club members extend their appreciation to Cost U Less for donating this “Big Prize” and for supporting many com- munity projects here in American Samoa. Then when the offense came to the sideline, Manning usually sat down with Smith to give him some pointers of what he saw. “I knew once we got to today that I’d be a good teammate,” Manning said. “I’d try to sup- port all the guys and be ready to play if I was called upon, sup- port Geno, support all the guys, and do what I had to do to. If I saw something then I needed to tell them.”Smith appreci- ated the support, although it didn’t lead to a win. Smith lost a pair of fumbles on sacks in the second quarter with New York in scoring position. He fared slightly better in the second half and fi nished the day 21 for 34 for 212 yards and a 10-yard TD pass to Evan Engram in the fourth quarter. Coach Ben McAdoo, whose own future is in doubt because of a lost season, wouldn’t commit to a quarterback for next week. Rookie Davis Webb was inactive Sunday, but the organization wants to get a look at him before the season ends. “We need to go take a look at the tape fi rst and put our heads together to see what direction we want to go,” McAdoo said. “But Geno didn’t do anything today that would cost him an opportunity.” The 37-year-old Manning’s future also is uncertain for the fi rst time since taking over as starter from Kurt Warner on Nov. 21, 2004. Manning started every game since, including 12 in the postseason, and won a pair of Super Bowl MVPs for the franchise. Manning holds almost all of the franchise’s major passing records and topped the 50,000-yard passing mark earlier this season. “Can’t control what’s going to happen,” he said. “We got four games left, so I’m going to fi nish out this season in what- ever capacity they need me to Page B6 samoa news, Monday, December 4, 2017 Hardly a journeyman: Keenum shines again in Vikes win ATLANTA (AP) — Maybe all year.” it’s time to stop asking about The Falcons (7-5) were held Case Keenum’s starting job without a touchdown for the with the Minnesota Vikings. fi rst time since Dec. 13, 2015, After being picked as the when they were blanked 38-0 NFC offensive player of the by Carolina. month for November, Keenum “We’re a way better ballclub kept up his hot play by throwing than nine points,” said Julio for two touchdowns in a 14-9 Jones, who managed only two victory over the Atlanta Falcons catches for 24 yards. on Sunday, extending Minne- The loss could be a crucial sota’s winning streak to eight. one for Atlanta, which dropped Keenum retained the starting two games behind New Orleans job even after TeMonday, (9-3) in the NFC South. GARDEN CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONTINUES TO EXCEL Th e Garden City Community College football program continues to excel, with yet another successful season. Head Coach Jeff Sims has turned the program around in three years and this is evident with the team playing in their second bowl game in a row. Last year, Garden City Community College played in the El Toro Bowl in Yuma, Arizona against Arizona Western Community College. Garden City went on to beat Arizona Western 25-23. Th e program skyrocketed and was ranked #1 in the country, aft er being crowned the 2016 National Junior College Cham- pions and Jayhawk Conference Champions — a fi rst in pro- gram history. Th is season, No. 12-ranked Garden City Com- munity College played in their second bowl game in two years, when they took the fi eld during the Heart of Texas Bowl in Cop- peras Cove, Texas this past Saturday against No. 8 Trinity Valley Community College. Garden City lost 41-48 in an action-packed game.Th e Poly- nesian athletes have contributed tremendously to the success of the program. DEAR ABBY: I’m 17 and so is my boyfriend. He is an only child, and all throughout his life, his par- ents have put a lot of pressure on him. Recently, they’ve been talking about him getting into an honors program in a college. Abby, his parents act like if he doesn’t get in, they won’t be proud of him. He always feels like he’s disappointing them because they never give him any words of encouragement or let him know he’s on the right track. It seems to me that he just wants to know that they’re proud of him. It’s hard for me to constantly try to support him through this because he needs his parents’ approval, and I can’t give that to him. Is there any way I can help him? He refuses to talk it out with his parents, but I just want them to be on the same page. Can I help without getting too involved with their family dynamics? -- THERE FOR HIM IN DALLAS DEAR THERE FOR HIM: Much as you would like to help your boyfriend, if you approach his par- ents about the way they are raising their son, it won’t help the situation. The odds are great that it will cause them to resent you. However, if your boyfriend would discuss this with a counselor at school or a teacher he trusts, that person -- an educator who is a contemporary of your boyfriend’s parents -- might suggest that their son needs positive reinforcement to reach his full potential. DEAR ABBY: I was married for many years to my ex-wife. I met another woman, wound up divorced, and I am now with this other woman. The problem is, my ex is disabled. Somebody stays with her during the week and cooks for her and such. Sundays are different, and I usually bring food to her, which takes about an hour. My new lady friend is having a fi t about this to the point that we may break up over it. Am I wrong for helping my ex, who has very little family and no children? -- GOOD DEED PUNISHED IN MISSISSIPPI DEAR GOOD DEED: You are a kind and caring individual. That your new lady friend cannot rec- ognize this for what it is, an act of compassion, and realize that you would do the same for her if she needed it, is sad. You are not wrong for helping your ex, since there is no one else who seems willing. If this woman is so threatened that she can’t cut you some slack one hour a week, perhaps breaking up would be best for both of you. DEAR ABBY: I am biting my tongue all the way through at work. One co-worker regularly brings her breakfast to eat. The other, even worse, comes in with wet hair and uses a curling iron at her computer station -- in shared space! Am I too old-fashioned? -- BITING MY TONGUE DEAR BITING: Many people bring their breakfast to work. Unless there is a rule against it, I see nothing wrong with it. As to your other co-worker, I agree what she’s doing is inappropriate. She’d probably do a better job if she groomed herself in the restroom or at home before work. Is your super- visor or boss aware she’s doing it? If not, the person should be informed. If so, then MYOB. samoa news, Monday, December 4, 2017 Page B15 Page B16 samoa news, Monday, December 4, 2017
