Jones California State University – Chico KEYWORDS animal rights, animal liberation, animal ethics, sentience, social justice, factory farming, industrialized agriculture ABSTRACT The literature on social justice, and social justice movements themselves, routinely ignore nonhuman animals as legitimate subjects of social justice. Yet, as with other social justice movements, the contemporary animal liberation movement has as its focus the elimination of institutional and systemic domination and oppression. In this paper, I explicate the philosophical and theoretical foundations of the contemporary animal rights movement, and situate it within the framework of social justice. I argue that those committed to social justice – to minimizing violence, exploitation, domination, objectification, and oppression – are equally obligated to consider the interests of all sentient beings, not only those of human beings. Introduction I start this essay with a discouraging observation: despite the fact that the modern animal1 rights movement is now over 40 years old, the ubiquitous domination and oppression experienced by other- than-human animals has yet to gain robust inclusion in social justice theory or practice.

    RELIGION AND FACTORY FARMING A briefing by Compassion in World Farming Joyce D’Silva, D. Litt. (Hon) 2015 INTRODUCTION Religions preach love, compassion, charity. Yet when we look at the state of animals kept in factory farms, we can well ask, “Who, among our religious teachers and leaders, is speaking up for farm animals?” Of course the main religions of the world were founded hundreds, often thousands of years ago. The largely rural context in which founders lived or their holy texts were written was drastically different from the massive industrial animal complexes we see today. So although all the major religions speak to us about animals and our relationship with them, their traditional teachings do not address the farming practices which have developed over the last 80 years or so. Therefore we have to infer from the holy books what they might say about factory farming. We can also look to modern religious leaders and see if they are providing leadership in this area. Globally, 70 billion animals are slaughtered for our food each year.1 The majority of these animals are bred for unnaturally high productivity and reared in factory farms. Their quality of life is poor and many may live in a state of physical and/or psychological misery. This kind of factory farming is the biggest cause of animal suffering on the planet. Yet each one of these farmed animals is, in scientific terms, a sentient being and in the eyes of religion, they are surely “creatures of god”? Compassion in World Farming’s founder, Peter Roberts, a deeply spiritual man, was once asked to define “factory farming”.

The project follows up an idea initially developed in the ANR programme Justice and Governance in Contemporary India and South Asia (“Just-India”) according to which the study of court cases might help our understanding of crucial social and political stakes. In this new project we focus on how certain issues related to nature and the environment, and which also involve ritual practices or religious notions, are brought before the court and how they take on a legal expression. This first workshop deals with the abolition of animal sacrifice. Historically, this issue has differed from one state to another in India, and compared to Nepal. In some states of India this practice has been governed by law for many years; in others it was recently abolished by the court; or, as in Nepal, it is now the object of a petition put forward by animal welfare activists. Although some arguments behind these reforms may be similar and may refer to moral, ethic, or legal concepts (non-violence, ‘compassion’, ‘animal rights’, prohibition of all ‘cruelty’, ‘fundamental duties’, ideals of progress and modernity, standards of hygiene), some aspects of this debate are more specific to a particular region and depend on the individual actors – various kinds of petitioners, politicians, lawyers, judges.

Yoga has links with Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism based on a shared philosophical framework of unity with all beings and belief in ahimsa, meaning non-harming. There is debate in the international yoga community about the spiritual, ethical and health-related links between yoga and plant-based diets. This questionnaire-based research investigates the beliefs about the moral status of farmed animals and attitudes towards plant-based diets of UK yoga teachers. The research found that: (i) UK yoga teachers have very progressive beliefs about farmed animals; (ii) around 30% of UK yoga teachers follow a plant-based diet, which is 25 times the proportion in the general UK population; (iii) nearly 75% desire to follow a plant-based diet; (iv) over two thirds regard plant-based diets as best aligned to their yogic practice; and (v) UK yoga teachers with more progressive beliefs about farmed animals and greater knowledge of agriculture abstain from consuming animal products to a greater extent. The high proportions of UK yoga teachers following vegetarian and plant-based diets, relative to the wider population, are likely based on applying the principle of ahimsa, or non-harming, to farmed animals and abstaining from consuming their products.

    AW I Quarterly Winter 2011 Volume 60 Number 1 AWI ABOUT THE COVER Quarterly ANIMAL WELFARE INSTITUTE QUARTERLY One-year-old Bob is a rabbit roommate to Keiki, a Java macaque at OPR Coastal Primate FOUNDER Sanctuary in Longview, Washington. OPR takes in monkeys formerly used in research Christine Stevens laboratories, as well as unwanted or abused monkeys from private owners. OPR generally pair-houses monkeys with their own kind. Some, however, act aggressively toward other DIRECTORS Cynthia Wilson, Chair monkeys but will accept and nurture rabbit companions. Keiki arrived at the sanctuary in Barbara K. Buchanan 2002 after his former owner pleaded no contest to animal abuse and surrendered custody. Charles M. Jabbour The monkey was in shock, with an untreated heart condition, a concussion, and a damaged Mary Lee Jensvold, Ph.D. finger (which had to be amputated) after his owner hit him with a stick for stealing one of Cathy Liss her cigarettes. Keiki is thriving at OPR, and he and Bob have become inseparable friends.
