In order to investigatewing and tail molt in membersof the crowfamily (Corvidae),I have useda rigid tube with • lengthwiseslot (Fig. 1): the bird is placed both head-first and on its b•ck into the cone but with one wingprotruding through the slot,the wingbeing supported by a flangeprojecting from the cone (Fig. 2). Herein I illustrate and briefly comment on the Purplish Jay (Cyanocorax cyanomelas) riding deer and tapir in the Pantanal, Western Brazil. The jay perched on the head or back of the ungulates and searched for ticks, playing the role of a cleaner bird. Deer are rarely reported as hosts or clients of tick-picking birds in the Neotropics. The Purplish Jay is the southernmost Neotropical cleaner corvid reported to date. Given their opportunistic foraging behaviour, a few other Cyanocorax jay species may occasionally play the cleaner role of wild and domestic ungulates.     THE WHITE-THROATED MAGPIE-JAY BY ALEXANDER F. SKUTCH ORE than 15 years have passed since I was last in the haunts of the M White-throated Magpie-Jay (Calocitta formosa) . During the years when I travelled more widely through Central America I saw much of this bird, and learned enough of its habits to convince me that it would well repay a thorough study. Since it now appears unlikely that I shall make this study myself, I wish to put on record such information as I gleaned, in the hope that these fragmentary notes will stimulate some other bird- watcher to give this jay the attention it deserves. A big, long-tailed bird about 20 inches in length, with blue and white plumage and a high, loosely waving crest of recurved black feathers, the White-throated Magpie-Jay is a handsome species unlikely to be confused with any other member of the family. Its upper parts, including the wings and most of the tail, are blue or blue-gray with a tinge of lavender. The sides of the head and all the under plumage are white, and the outer feathers of the strongly graduated tail are white on the terminal half. A narrow black collar crosses the breast and extends half-way up each side of the neck, between the white and the blue. The stout bill and the legs and feet are black. The sexes are alike in appearance. The species extends from the Mexican states of Colima and Puebla to northwestern Costa Rica. A bird of the drier regions, it is found chiefly along the Pacific coast from Mexico southward as far as the Gulf of Nicoya in Costa Rica.

    THREE JAYS PLANTING ON THREE CONTINENTS While it is exciting to learn about the different animals, weather and seasons of the other hemisphere, it can also be quite comforting for children to learn of the similarities. When it comes to the raucous, bounding jay, there are many. The Blue Jay of North America (below) is a generic term for at least five species (Cyanocitta), all of which have extensive blue colouring. The Jay of Europe (Garrulus glandarius) , shown below, has just a tiny patch of blue, as if his cousins across the Atlantic had sent him a handkerchief of theirs. The Azure Jay (Cyanocorax caeruleus) of South America's Atlantic Rainforest (below) is like a regal relative with a deep blue cloak and a black hood. All are members of the crow family and it shows in their personalities. All are so well known for their habit of hiding seeds that they have become almost symbolic for it in each region. In late summer and early autumn when seeds from the great trees are falling, the jays on all three continents are greedy about trying to find as many seeds as possible to store. They hide them in logs, under leaves, in the earth, in anticipation of the lean times to come during the winter. Some they find later and eat; some they do not. Those they do not find often germinate and grow into trees. To people observing them, it seems as if they are intentionally planting the seeds and many stories about them doing so are told. In a time when forests are disappearing, reforestation has taken on urgency and almost a sacredness.

It had been a while since I had guided a Colombia trip, and I had forgotten how neat the birds were! This two week customized tour combined a Northern Colombia trip with some of the best sites in Central Colombia. The weather was beautiful, the birds were spectacular and cooperative, and most importantly we had a fun and friendly group; we all had a blast. Custom trips are a great option for groups of friends that like to travel together, and it really worked well this time. I really love that White-whiskered Spinetail was voted “bird of the trip” – it’s the only time I can remember a spinetail winning that honor – it’s an often unappreciated group, but this one is really special and we had point-blank views. Runner up was Santa Marta Antbird, which was also highly deserving as one of the newest splits of a truly www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Tropical Birding Trip Report Colombia, February-March 2016 amazing genus. Other favorites were Golden-winged Sparrow, Russet-throated Puffbird, Scarlet Ibis, Turquoise Dacnis, Blue-billed Curassow, Red-bellied Grackle, Sword-billed Hummer, Crested Owl, Chestnut Piculet, Striped Manakin, and shockingly, even a couple of tapaculos, which impressed some by showing amazingly well. We started off in the “megapolis” of Bogotá, which served as our base for the first few nights as we made day trips to nearby sites in the eastern cordillera of the Andes.

    Northern Peru Marañon Endemics & Marvelous Spatuletail 4th to 25th September 2016 Marañón Crescentchest by Dubi Shapiro This tour just gets better and better. This year the 7 participants, Rob and Baldomero enjoyed a bird filled trip that found 723 species of birds. We had particular success with some tricky groups, finding 12 Rails and Crakes (all but 1 being seen!), 11 Antpittas (8 seen), 90 Tanagers and allies, 71 Hummingbirds, 95 Flycatchers. We also found many of the iconic endemic species of Northern Peru, such as White-winged Guan, Peruvian Plantcutter, Marañón Crescentchest, Marvellous Spatuletail, Pale-billed Antpitta, Long-whiskered Owlet, Royal Sunangel, Koepcke’s Hermit, Ash-throated RBL Northern Peru Trip Report 2016 2 Antwren, Koepcke’s Screech Owl, Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Grey-bellied Comet and 3 species of Inca Finch. We also found more widely distributed, but always special, species like Andean Condor, King Vulture, Agami Heron and Long-tailed Potoo on what was a very successful tour. Top 10 Birds 1. Day 1: 4 September: Pacific coast and Chaparri Upon meeting, we headed straight towards the coast and birded the fields near Monsefue, quickly finding Coastal Miner. Our main quarry proved trickier and we had to scan a lot of fields before eventually finding a distant flock of Tawny-throated Dotterel; we walked closer, getting nice looks at a flock of 24 of the near-endemic pallidus subspecies of this cracking shorebird.
