Photograph: Christopher Thomond for the Guardian FirstGroup has emerged as a frontrunner for the multibillion-pound west coast rail franchise alongside incumbent Virgin Trains, with the contest now a two-horse race between the experienced operators. Aberdeen-based FirstGroup is vying with Virgin despite announcing last year that it is handing back its Great Western rail contract three years ahead of schedule, avoiding more than £800m in payments to the government. The Department for Transport is expected to bank a considerable windfall from the new 14-year west coast contract, with Virgin currently paying an annual premium of about £150m to the state. Both bidders are expected to promise an even bigger number over the life of the new franchise. The winner is expected to be announced next month. It is understood that FirstGroup and Virgin are still in talks with the DfT, but two foreign-owned bidders on the four-strong shortlist are no longer considered likely contenders. They are a joint venture between public transport operator Keolis and SNCF, the French state rail group, and a bid from Abellio, which is controlled by the Dutch national rail operator.

At Wool Station (south side) you will find a bus departure screen, taxi rank, bike racks and a local street map (the map is on the outside wall of the station building). There is an off-road cycle/footpath from Wool Station (north side) to Bovington Camp - the distance is about 2 miles. The Waterloo-Weymouth rail service is operated by South West Trains. Trains in each direction call at Wool at hourly intervals throughout the day and at similar intervals in the evening, seven days a week. During Mon-Fri peak hours, there are additional stops giving a half-hourly frequency. Up-to-the-minute information about train arrivals/departures at Wool Station can be viewed here. These metadata describe how countries have compiled tram and metro statistics, what the data cover, and where possible how passenger numbers and passenger-km have been determined. Whether data are based on ticket sales, on-board sensors or another method may well affect the comparability of passenger numbers across systems and countries, hence it being documented here. Most of the data are at the system level, allowing comparisons across cities and systems. However, not every country could provide this, sometimes due to confidentiality reasons. In these cases, sometimes either a regional figure (e.g. the Provinces of Canada, which mix tram and metro figures with bus and ferry numbers) or a national figure (e.g. Czechia trams, which excludes the Prague tram system) have been given to maximise the utility of the dataset.     News Release 54/06 23 October 2006 CC ACTS TO PREVENT HIGHER FARES FROM STAGECOACH/ SCOTTISH CITYLINK TIE-UP The Competition Commission (CC) has concluded that the joint venture between Stagecoach and Scottish Citylink could lead to higher fares and reduced service levels for their coach passengers on the Glasgow–Aberdeen and Edinburgh–Inverness routes. Prior to the joint venture, Stagecoach and Scottish Citylink had been the two main coach competitors on these routes. The CC will now require the joint venture to sell some of its services to a new and independent owner to ensure that coach passengers do not lose out as a result of the loss of competition which previously existed between Stagecoach and Scottish Citylink. The completed joint venture between Stagecoach Bus Holdings Limited and Braddell PLC saw Stagecoach’s Motorvator-branded services and megabus-branded services in Scotland (and between Scotland and England) brought together with Scottish Citylink, which had been their direct competitor on a number of routes in Scotland. The CC’s final report, which is published today at www.competition-commission.org.uk, concludes that the joint venture would lead to a substantial lessening of competition on the ‘Saltire Cross’ routes (the Glasgow–Aberdeen and Edinburgh–Inverness routes, crossing at Perth), given the removal of competition between megabus and Scottish Citylink. This confirms the view of the provisional findings report which was published in August. Inquiry Chairman, John Baillie said: Customers benefit from competition and we do not see how this joint venture can preserve these benefits for passengers when previously these companies had been competing vigorously for their custom.
