A CONCISE STUDY OF THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE A CONCISE STUDY OF THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE What is the Bible? The Bible is a collection of books, accepted by Christians as sacred and inspired by God, providing the basis for beliefs about spiritual matters and providing guidelines for moral living. Many verses throughout the Bible attest to its divine origin (Genesis 6:9-13, Exodus 20:1-17, 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21, Revelation 1:1-2, etc.) But the Bible was not simply dictated word-for-word by God; it is also the work of its many different human authors. The different writing skills, writing styles, personalities, world views, and cultural backgrounds of the human authors can be seen in their works. Many of the New Testament books were originally written as letters rather than as Scripture. Some Bible writings include the authors' own research and recollection of historical events (Luke 1:1-4) and their own opinions (1 Corinthians 7:12). THE OLD TESTAMENT There are 39 books in the Old Testament, generally separated into 4 divisions: 1) The Pentateuch traditionally designated as the 5 books of Moses. 2) Historical Books, number 12, from Joshua to Esther. 3) Poetical Books, number 5, from Job to Song of Solomon. 4) Prophetical Books, including the writings of the 5 Major Prophets, from Isaiah to Daniel, 5) and the 12 Minor Prophets from Hosea to Malachi. Synopsis The Old Testament tells the story of God's chosen people, the Hebrews, who were later known as Israelites or Jews. -
An Investigation Into the Version That Shaped European Scholarship on the Arabic Bible
Collectanea Christiana Orientalia 18 (2021): 237-259 Vevian Zaki Cataloger of Arabic Manuscripts Hill Museum and Manuscript Library Visiting Researcher Faculty of History University of Oxford The “Egyptian Vulgate” in Europe: An Investigation into the Version that Shaped European Scholarship on the Arabic Bible Introduction In the years from 1818 to 1821, August Scholz (1792–1852), a Catholic orientalist and biblical scholar, made many journeys to libraries across Europe seeking New Testament (NT) manuscripts. He wrote an account of his travels in his book Biblisch-kritische Reise, and in this book, Scholz wrote about all the NT manuscripts he encountered in each library he visited, whether they were in Greek, Latin, Syriac, or Arabic.1 What attracts the attention when it comes to the Arabic NT manuscripts is that he always compared their texts to the text of the printed edition of Erpenius.2 This edition of the Arabic NT was prepared in 1616 by Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624), the professor of Arabic studies at Leiden University—that is, two centuries before the time of Scholz. It was the first full Arabic NT to be printed in Europe, and its text was taken from Near Eastern manuscripts that will be discussed below. In the few hundred years that followed, authentic letters from apostles as well as pseudepigraphical works had begun to circulate. Therefore, a process began of acceptance and rejection for the writings. The book of 1 John was immediately accepted into the Canon along with the Gospel of John. However, 2 John and 3 John were at first disputed and then later included in the twenty-seven books of the New Testament. This thesis will examine the process of canonization and examine the letters attributed to John in order to reveal the authorship of the Johannines. Wenstrom Bible Ministries Pastor-Teacher Bill Wenstrom Tuesday January 31, 2017 www.wenstrom.org First John: Canonicity of Johannine Epistles Lesson # 2 The term “canon” or “canonicity” in Christianity refers to a collection of many books acknowledged or recognized by the early church as inspired by God. Canonicity is actually determined by God or in other words, a book is not inspired because men determined or decreed that it was canonical but rather it is canonical because God inspired it. It was not the Jewish people who determined what should be in their Old Testament and it was not the Christian community that determined which Christian literary works would be in the New Testament canon. Therefore, inspiration determines canonization. Canonicity is determined authoritatively by God and this authority is simply recognized by His people. The biblical canon is not, of course, primarily a collection or list of literary masterpieces, like the Alexandrian lists, but one of authoritative sacred texts. Their authority is derived not from their early date, nor from their role as records of revelation (important though these characteristics were), but from the fact that they were believed to be inspired by God and thus to share the nature of revelation themselves. This belief, expressed at various points in the OT, had become a settled conviction among Jews of the intertestamental period, and is everywhere taken for granted in the NT treatment of the OT. That NT writings share this scriptural and inspired character is first stated in 1 Timothy 5:18 and 2 Peter 3:16. [JGRChJ 13 (2017) 129-51] THE EARLY READERSHIP OF THE CATHOLIC EPISTLES Gregory Goswell Christ College, Sydney, Australia There is a new appreciation of the Catholic Epistles as a canonical unit, and this article builds on and interacts with recent attempts to elucidate the hermeneutical significance of this epistolary collection. 1 My focus is the paratextual elements of the seven Epistles in early manuscripts, with the biblical paratext understood to include the order of the books, their assigned titles and internal divisions in the letters (e.g. para- graphs). 2 These elements provide a frame of reference for the text, and Larry Hurtado has urged the study of biblical manuscripts as ‘Christian artifacts’, arguing that they provide clues about the early history of interpretation (Wirkungsgeschichte ) of the books.3 This framework acts to present the biblical books to later readers in a particular canonical form and as a result provides interpretive prompts that guide the recep- tion and proper use of the books. The Johannine Epistles and the Question of Early Catholicism
THE JOHANNINE EPISTLES AND THE QUESTION OF EARLY CATHOLICISM by C. CLIFTON BLACK II Duke University, Durham, North Carolina A good deal of scholarly conversation continues to be stimulated by the deceptively slight letters of John,1 as well as by the vexed question of the presence or absence of 'early Catholic' elements in the later documents of the canon.2 Sparse, however, is the secon- dary literature that conjoins the two subjects, Frühkatholizismus and the Johannine epistles, and to my knowledge a systematic con- sideration of their conjunction does not exist. The objectives of this essay are thus three-fold: to focus the question of early Catholicism in the Johannine letters,3 to draw some preliminary conclusions, and to suggest some directions along which the conversation might continue. 1 Germane to the present discussion are J.
