August 16, 2021 A Successful Season Start for Men’s Varsity Soccer Wins Season Opener Varsity Boy’s Golf! After four weeks ▪ KY 2A Section 4 Champions of grueling ▪ KY Invitational Tournament Champions preseason training ▪ Battle of the Bluegrass Champions in the summer heat, your CAL Centurions men’s varsity soccer opened the 2021 fall campaign with a home match against preseason top-25 Bullitt East Chargers.

The opening minutes of the contest saw both teams struggle to connect passes and maintain possession. For the Centuri- ons, space and intent were there. Questions were asked of the Bullitt East defense, however, the CAL attack was una- ble to put away early chances.

CAL Girls Varsity Soccer Team Falls Short to Centurion Field Hockey Begins Season & Bullitt East High School Lady Chargers Attempts to Defend Championship Title at Apple Tournament This Weekend!

A tough start to the season for the Lady Centurions Soccer Team falling short to the Lady Chargers of Bullitt East. The game started on a muggy mid-day of

September 14th 2021. The Lady Centurions starting lineup consisted of Lillie Andres #10, Samantha Durston #3, Madison Raley #4, Jasmine Hubbard #14, Lu- na Guarin #18, Taylor Touche #24, Olivia Possidento #12, Ella Mast #20, Morgan Coffey #22, Hadley Snowden #23 and Addison Chandler #11. A Bullitt East counter attack and well-placed through ball saw the visitors open the scoring in the 3rd minute.

Not to be deterred, CAL continued to apply pressure and broke through to level the contest at 1 – 1 with a spectacular run and finish by Caden Hauser in the 12th minute.

Just three minutes later, another fast break counter attack from the visiting Chargers saw Bullitt East retake the lead at 2 – 1.

As cloud cover provided much needed relief from the sun, a mandated hydration break gave the Centurions an opportunity to regroup and discuss adjustments.

Coming out of the 1st half hydration break, CAL established control of possession with a spirited defense, con- nected more passes, and increased pressure on the Bullitt East defense.

On CAL’s 5th corner of the match, Nate Lesperance’s long ball to the back post found Dylan Crockett with a header on frame. Bullitt East goalkeeper misplayed the touch in a crowd and CAL’s Cam Vogt finished the chance to level the contest at 2 – 2.

A heads up quick throw by Nate Lesperance four minutes later found a streaking Dylan Cornett whose cheeky move slipped past two Chargers defenders and a clinical finish put CAL ahead 3 – 2 going into the half.

The 2nd half saw Bullitt East dial up the pressure and ask a lot of questions of the Centurions defense and goalkeeper Caleb Rountree. Time and again, however, CAL’s defense disrupt- ed the Chargers attack and Caleb Rountree calmly swatted shots on goal to preserve the CAL lead.

Second verse, same as the first. Coming out of the hydration break, CAL frustrated the pressing Chargers with a smother- ing defense, connected more passes, and controlled possession for most of the second half.

With a summer heat storm bearing down on the area, officials were forced to call the match with just over five minutes remaining.

You CAL Centurions men’s varsity soccer program opens the 2021 fall campaign with a well-earned 3 – 2 victory over the visiting Bullitt East Chargers.

2 VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER (continued from front page) August 16, 2021 The first half of the game started a bit slow with both teams getting use to the environment and ad- justing to the weather conditions. The Lady Chargers took posses- sion of the ball breaking through our line of defense and were able to put points on the board first making the score 0-1. The Lady Centurions began their hunt to score a goal and even the count. They worked hard at creating opportunities for each other to score a goal. There were several shots on goal but we continued to fall short. On the other hand, the student section was on fire. They con- tinued to lend their cheers and commentary to lighten the mood and help the Lady Centurions come alive. With a few minutes left of the first half, Luna Guarin #18 took pos- session of the ball and passed it to Lillie Andres #10 for the goal. This tied the score to 1-1 at the end of the first half.

As the second half began much of the same transpired, the Lady Centurions continued to trail with another goal scored by the Lady Chargers. The team refused to give up and per- sisted as their passing percentage increased. They rallied to- gether but fell short to score on a couple of penalties where the kick went over the goal. In the end, The Lady Charges prolonged their gap by scoring twice on the second half of the game making the final score 1-3.

6 JV GIRLS SOCCER August 16, 2021 LADY CENTURION JV SOCCER KICKOFF

After only two practices as a full team, the Lady Centurion JV soccer team is sure to be a force to reckon with. Their teamwork shined through as they dribbled, shot and blocked throughout their first game of the season.

On Saturday, the Lady Centurion JV soccer team kicked off their season in a competition against Bullitt East. This year’s team consists of five young ladies who haven’t played soccer since they were small children along with seven experienced girls who will show them the way. In their first match, everyone had a chance to shine.

The team had a great initial game but their efforts fell short. The final score was 0 - 3. The Lady Centurions will be back in action Monday night against North Oldham.

7 7TH & 8TH GRADE FOOTBALL August 16, 2021 Our team kicked off the unofficial season opener this Saturday (August 7th) with a 10AM scrimmage game versus Bullitt East Middle School. Traveling by bus to the scrimmage no doubt added to team chemistry. Thank you Miller Transportation!

The scrimmage format is a great way for the Coaches to evaluate their teams, their players and determine where improvement is needed. Each team is given the ball at mid-field and runs 10 consecutive plays. Then, it’s the other teams turn to run their 10 plays. The same 10 play format is also used for “red zone” simulation. The entire scrimmage lasted for over two hours and below are some observations:

A) From the mid-field format, Bullitt East Middle scored 3 touchdowns vs CAL’s 5 touchdowns….but who is counting :-) B) From the red zone portion of the scrimmage, CAL scored 4 touch- downs, including one by the defense! Bullitt East failed to score from their red zone attempts. C) CAL’s offense has a number of skilled play makers, difference makers! D) As the scrimmage wore on, CAL’s defense started to dominate. E) Field goal kicking looks to be a real strength for this team! F) There are a few new faces on the team that were very impressive. G) The hard work of the coaches and players including practice and weight training (that started in the heat of July) really paid dividends.

At the end of scrimmage, CAL coaches and players kneeled with the Bullitt East team in prayer; perhaps the most impressive difference maker of the day! Looking forward to watching this team play this year. GO CAL!!

8 5TH & 6TH GRADE FOOTBALL August 16, 2021 The Junior Centurions traveled to start regular season play on August 14 against Franklin County.

The boys dominated both sides shutting down the Rams 41-0. A solid CAL defense gave our opponent trouble getting to the end zone.

QB Jackson Burke threw for 4 touchdowns. Jayden Leak had 2 TD's and Braeden Meade, Boogie Cook and Noah Perkins each had 1 TD. Backup QB Grayson Cline saw action connecting with Robert Craig for a final TD.

The shutout was preserved on the game's final play with a sack by Owen Andrews. The offensive line was sol- id led by center Hudson Jackson!

Total team effort and great start to the season. We continue play at home Aug 21 at 1:00pm against the West End Yellow Jackets. Come out and see some great football!!

9 3RD & 4TH GRADE FOOTBALL August 16, 2021 August 14, 2021

The CAL pee-wee football team started the season with a 30-6 blowout at Franklin County! CAL start- ed fast from with a 24 yard pass from Burke to Craig and would score 3 plays later. CAL rushed 16 times for 119 yards. Tyler Lewis had 5 carries for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jesse Craig had 4 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. Eli Burke was 7/10 passing for 82 yards and 3 2 point conver- sions. The defense dominated the day and didn’t allow a first down until the 3rd quarter of the game. Outside linebacker Paul Favors was a beast all day leading CAL with 9 tackles. CAL will host the Westend Yellow Jackets for their home opener on August 21st @ 11:30 AM.

10 1ST & 2ND GRADE FOOTBALL August 16, 2021 CAL Mighty Mites had their opening game against the Frankfort Rams. The game remained scoreless until the 2nd quarter when 2nd grader Jack Lowe rushed in for a touchdown to put the Cen- turions on the board! The team went into halftime with Centurions up 6-0. The Rams offense was closing in on the goal line when 2nd grader Collin Hammer recovered a Rams fumble! Moving into the 4th quarter all-star Jack Lowe scored his second touchdown of the game followed by scoring a one point conversion putting the Centurions up 13-0 in the 4th quarter. With 7 minutes left to go the Rams score their first touchdown and complete their 1 point conversion bringing the score to 13-7. CAL had a tough fumble which turned the ball over allowing the Rams to score bringing the score to 13-13 with 4:34 left in the 4th quarter. After some controversial clock issues the Rams were able to run one last play with 1.7 seconds left. The Rams were able to turn that play into a touchdown to win the game finalizing the score 19-13. The boys fought hard but came up short in the end. This will undoubtedly be a fantastic rematch back on our home turf.
