Weaver, Jr., Ph.D., and Patti J. Anderson, Ph.D. For this period, 89 specimens were submitted to the Botany Section for identification, and 1,062 were received from other sections for identification/name verification for a total of 1,151. In addition, seven specimens were added to the herbarium. Some of the samples received for identification are discussed below: Acer buergerianum Miq. (a genus of ca. 110 species of highly ornamental trees, widely distributed in the North Temperate Zone with a marked concentration in eastern Asia). Aceraceae (or Sapindaceae). Trident maple. This slow-growing, small to medium-sized tree is native to eastern China, but has long been cultivated in Japan and is sometimes erroneously reported to be native there. It grows to 10 m tall, often branching low to the ground and forming a rounded crown. The bark on mature trunks is scaly and mottled with shades of pale gray and brown, the scales sloughing off to reveal tints of orange. The leaves are distinctive, described as resembling a duck’s feet. The blades are 4-6 cm long, glossy dark green above, three-nerved from the base and divided above the middle into three nearly equal, entire or unevenly serrulate, long- pointed lobes. The inconspicuous, greenish flowers appear with the leaves in the spring. The fruits are the “keys” typical of maples, with two samaras arranged end-to-end, each Acer buergerianum 2-3 cm long.

  • Agricultural Plant Diversity of the Orchards Along the Bank of Chao Phraya River and Ko Kret Areas in Nonthaburi Province
Kasetsart J. (Nat. Sci.) 42 : 215 - 225 (2008) Agricultural Plant Diversity of the Orchards along the Bank of Chao Phraya River and Ko Kret Areas in Nonthaburi Province Kittipong Treetaruyanont*, Wanlop Phosunk and Panom Suthisaksopon ABSTRACT A survey of the agricultural plant diversity in the orchards on the bank of Chao Phraya river and Ko Kret areas of Nonthaburi province was conducted in the year 2005. The soil in these areas was Banglen Series : (Bl, clay and silty clay loam) and pH was between 4.2-6.6. Soil fertility was considered to contain high plant nutrients, ranging form good to very good level, and the quality of water was also good. The total plant diversity of 48 orders, 96 families, 246 genera and 429 species of agricultural plants was recorded. The majority of plants was ornamental plants, 52.57 percent. Agricultural crops were categorized into 3 groups, i.e. native species, threatened species and extirpated species. Variability in cultivars of durians and rose apples were decreased. The threatened species were Kruai (Horsfieldia irya Gaertn Warb), Chomphu Mamiao (Syzygium mallacsense L. Merr. & L.M. Perry ST), Somsa (Citrus aurantium L. var. aurantium ExST), Reo (Alpinia nigra gaertn. Burtt H), and Dipli (Piper retrofractum Vahl C). The extirpated species were Chanthet (Myristica fragrans Houtt. ExS), Clove (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr.& L.M. Perry ExST), Langsat (Landsium domesticum), Raksorn (Calotropis giganted R.Br.), Payom (Shorea roxburghii), and purple Chabasorn (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L.). The results of this survey should be further used as the base line for plant genetic conservation policy and for environmental conservation.

  • Small Trees for Miami-Dade Landscapes
Small Trees for Miami-Dade Landscapes John McLaughlin, Carlos Balerdi and Marguerite Beckford1 The current trend toward smaller yards (e.g., zero lot lines) signifies the need for adjustments in the way we use and landscape our yards. For nonpermanent items such as flowering annuals and vegetables this could mean greater use of raised beds (e.g., French intensive or square foot for vegetables), containers and decorative stone planters. The latter are especially useful for many perennial plants. W hen it comes to choosing shrubs and especially trees, greater care needs to be exercised in the items selected and where they are placed. W hat seemed to be an ideal choice in the nursery may quickly grow and become out of scale for a small yard, if not an expensive liability. One solution is to choose those shrubs and small trees (including fruit trees) that can be grown in large tubs, and this is an option especially suited to houses with large patios. Indeed given the alkaline nature of much of Miami-Dade’s soil, this is a useful alternative for plants such as camellias and dwarf magnolias (e.g., ‘Little Gem’) irrespective of yard size. It is possible however, to include trees as part of your permanent in-ground landscaping even where there is limited space for planting. There are many different types of trees that can be safely planted in a small yard and provide shade and/or ornamental appeal. In addition a number of shrubs, such as hibiscus and oleander, are available as standards (usually grafted and grown with a single approximately 5’ bare trunk), and these can substitute for a small tree.

  • MEDIA FACTSHEET C Alexandra No. 394 (Horthouse)
MEDIA FACTSHEET C Alexandra No. 394 (HortHouse) Alexandra Road No. 394 is a colonial house that was built in the early 20th century to serve the staff of the Former States Railway at the height of rail transportation for trade and commerce and emergence of rail corridors in the Malay Peninsula, where Singapore served as a primary trading port. Spanning 0.7 hectares in size, the bungalow consists of a two- storey main building (257.5 m2) and an outhouse (98.03 m2). Owing to its large size, the building was believed to have housed a high-ranking official, possibly the railway superintendent, and his family. The house was designed in the Arts & Craft style, with its steeply-pitched tile roof and gable wall. Its unique asymmetrical arrangement of architectural features with brick skirting around the base exudes a 1930s country cottage charm. An example of Singapore’s domestic architecture and of buildings and structures tied to Singapore’s rail history, Alexandra Road No. 394 was gazetted as a conserved building by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) on 6 June 2014. The building was restored in 2017. HortHouse Alexandra Road No. 394 will be named “HortHouse” and will serve as a training centre for the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE). The centre will continue to offer a range of courses on horticulture, arboriculture, and botany for landscape industry partners as well as gardening community. Due to be opened in early 2018, HortHouse will accommodate a visitor services counter and training classrooms. An information board will also be installed to educate visitors about the history of the house.

  • A Word Or Two About Gardening
A WORD OR TWO ABOUT GARDENING Adding day time fragrance to your Miami-Dade landscape. When selecting landscape plants it is logical to first consider factors such as local climate and soil conditions, plus size and exposure of the site, and not forgetting the time you are prepared to spend gardening. This done, you can evaluate plants based on their aesthetic qualities. In assessing landscape appeal the primary if not exclusive criteria will undoubtedly center on the plant’s visual impact – color (leaf, flower, fruit, and bark), leaf texture and overall growth form. Selecting at least some plants based on their aromatic properties is in most instances an after thought. There is a special delight in entering a garden and becoming vaguely aware of a pleasing fragrance and the satisfaction of finally discovering its’ source. Such was the case returning home one evening in late spring many years ago (pre Hurricane Andrew) when a pink shower tree (Cassia javanica) was blooming in our front yard. There is scant mention of the mild sweet fragrance we detected in descriptions of C. javanica so its’ presence came as an unexpected but pleasant surprise. A highly polymorphic species with several subspecies currently recognized, one of these C. javanica subsp. nodosa (formerly regarded as a distinct species) was described as having sweetly fragrant flowers. Alas our tree is no more, having succumbed to a swarm of chainsaws that buzzed through the neighborhood following Andrew. The purpose of this article is to expand enjoyment of local landscapes by engaging not only our eyes but our nose.

BIBLIOGRAPHY : ALGAE 446 XVII. Bibliography (continued 368) from page J.F. Veldkamp Editorial note: Traditionally we have included literature references on non- vascular plants. We have, however, the impression that few, if any, are inter- ested in this information, as we hardly ever get any reaction from scientists engaged in these fields. Cryptogamists, moreover, often give no inkling as to the distribution of their taxa, which makes the scanning of their literature a time- consuming and unrewarding business. Therefore, unless serious protests are recei- ved, and unless specialists offer their assistance in compiling the relevant to literature, we intend to save ourselves space and a lot of time, and propose delete the sub-chapters a) and b) starting with the next volume.
