Republican SINN FÉIN Poblachtach Theobald Wolfe Tone Commemoration Bodenstown, County Kildare 2000 ‘Former Republicans have been bought off with palliatives’ Cathleen Knowles McGuirk, Vice President Republican Sinn Féin delivered the oration at the grave of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the founder of Irish Republicanism, on Sunday, June 11 in Bodenstown cemetery, outside Sallins, Co Kildare. The large crowd, led by a colour party carrying the National Flag and contingents of Cumann na mBan and Na Fianna Éireann, as well as the General Tom Maguire Flute Band from Belfast marched the three miles from Sallins Village to the grave of Wolfe Tone at Bodenstown. Contingents from all over Ireland as well as visitors from Britain and the United States took part in the march, which was marshalled by Seán Ó Sé, Dublin. At the graveside of Wolfe Tone the proceedings were chaired by Seán Mac Oscair, Fermanagh, Ard Chomhairle, Republican Sinn Féin who said he was delighted to see the large number of young people from all over Ireland in attendance this year. The ceremony was also addressed by Peig Galligan on behalf of the National Graves Association, who care for Ireland’s patriot graves. We gather here every year to honour Wolfe Tone and the United Irishmen and to rededicate ourselves to the principles they espoused. We remember that it was the actions of the 1916 leaders and their comrades, inspired by such patriot revolutionaries as Tone and Emmett, that lit the flame that eventually destroyed the British Empire and reawakened the republicanism of the Irish people. The first article of the constitution of the Society of United Irishmen stated as its purpose, the 'forwarding a brotherhood of affection, a communion of rights, and an union of power among Irishmen of every religious persuasion'. James Connolly said of Wolfe Tone that he united "the hopes of the new revolutionary faith and the ancient aspirations of an oppressed people". -

The statue honoring one of the island’s most famous citizens, Josephine Tascher, the white creole woman who was to become Napoleon’s lover, wife, and empress, is defaced in the most curious and creative of ways. Her head is missing; she has been decapitated. But this is no ordinary defacement: the marble head has been cleanly sawed off—an effort that could not have been executed without the help of machinery and more than one pair of willing hands—and red paint has been dripped from her neck and her gown. The defacement is a beheading, a reenactment of the most visible of revolutionary France’s punitive and socially purifying acts—death by guillotine. The biographical record shows Josephine born of a slaveholding family of declining fortunes, married into the ranks of France’s minor aristocracy, and surviving the social chaos of the French Revolution, which sentenced countless members of the ancien régime to the guillotine. In the form of this statue, she received her comeuppance in twentieth-century Martinique, where she met the fate that she narrowly missed a century earlier. Scratched on the pedestal are the words—painted in red and penned in creole— “Respe ba Matinik. Respe ba 22 Me” [Respect Martinique. Respect May 22]. The date inscribed here of the anniversary of the 1848 slave rebellion that led to the abolition of slavery on Martinique is itself an act of postcolonial reinscription, one that challenges the of‹cial French-authored abolition proclamation of March 31, 1848, and 2 CULTURAL CONUNDRUMS Statue of Josephine in Fort-de-France, Martinique, today. -

DEMYSTIFYING FEMININE IRELAND DURING THE REBELLION OF 1798 Cecilia Barnard Although the role assigned to women by Irish historians during the era of the United Irishmen is one of background involvement and passivity, Mary Ann McCracken and Elizabeth Richards provide important case studies to the contrary. Directly opposing not just history but contemporary propaganda, Elizabeth and Mary Ann stood firmly for their beliefs and now provide important insights into the rebellions. Instead of being a passive Hibernia or a ragged Granu, the women of Ireland in the 1790s had experiences and emotions that ranged from distrust and terror to active involvement in the movement. Irish women were part and parcel to the events in the rebellion, and that including them as active participants in the story of the rebellion provides an insight that the historical context will continue to miss if their participation remains in the background rather than the forefront. Introduction The prescribed role of Irish women during the Irish rebellions of 1798 was as victims of exploitation, both in propaganda and in life.1 Even though the Irish Unionist movement promoted itself as an egalitarian movement dedicated to the common good, this common good did not include women. Women were not seen as equal partners in the movement. The United Irishmen gave no significant consideration of the extension of the franchise to its female members at any time in its activism, which historians point to as modern evidence of their entrenched gender inequality.2 It’s doubtful that women were only the passive participants described by historians and Unionist propaganda during the Unionist movement and the rebellions as a whole, but their historical contributions have been largely neglected by the larger scholarship on Irish history.3 The aim of this paper is to analyze the differences between women in Unionist legend at the time and the recorded lived experiences of women from the 1790s, specifically women who documented life in their own words in the late 1790s. -

It discusses the Provisionals’ ending of the use of political violence and the movement’s drift or determined policy towards entering the political mainstream, the acceptance of democratic norms. The sustained focus of my article is consideration of the revision of core Provisional principles. It analyses the reasons for this revisionism and it considers the reaction to and consequences of this revisionism. Introduction The origins of Irish republicanism reside in the United Irishman Rising of 1798 which aimed to create a democratic society which would unite Irishmen of all creeds. The physical force tradition seeks legitimacy by trying to trace its origin to the 1798 Rebellion and the insurrections which followed in 1803, 1848, 1867 and 1916. Sinn Féin (We Ourselves) is strongly republican and has links to the IRA. The original Sinn Féin was formed by Arthur Griffith in 1905 and was an umbrella name for nationalists who sought complete separation from Britain, as opposed to Home Rule. The current Sinn Féin party evolved from a split in the republican movement in Ireland in the early 1970s. Gerry Adams has been party leader since 1983, and led Sinn Féin in mutli-party peace talks which resulted in the signing of the 1998 Belfast Agreement. -

Le géné- ral Michel Franceschi nous fait découvrir ici et partager dans les prochains numéros quelques unes des innombrables facettes, souvent méconnues, parfois dénigrées, de ces 20 ans d’histoire de France. En complément, nous évoquerons, dans la rubrique Culture de cette revue, certains des ouvrages que l’auteur a déjà édités à l’occasion de cet anniversaire. Souhaitons que la repentance ne conduise pas nos autorités et nos médias à altérer voire à effacer cette incomparable page grandiose de notre histoire. En cet automne 1795, le jeune général Napoléon Bonaparte se trouve à Paris en attente d’un hypothétique départ en mission à Constantinople, faute du commandement militaire impor- tant qu’aurait dû valoir au « capitaine canon » sa bril- lante victoire à Toulon sur les Anglais en décembre 1793. Son refus d’un comman- dement en Vendée contre les Chouans (« Jamais mon épée contre le peuple ») l’a même rendu suspect au pouvoir politique. Battant le pavé, découragé et famé- lique, il se morfond à Paris, désespérant de son avenir. Dans le pays, l’inquiétude La journée du 13 Vendémiaire (5 octobre 1795). Le général Bonaparte commande au plus près des combats ses pièces d’artillerie est générale. Ayant succédé à l’Assemblée législative le 21 septembre 1792, la Convention nationale est en situation poli- tique précaire, menacée sur ses deux ailes.
