Previous meetings • The two sides have not met before, while CFR have never played a Danish side and København – in their current incarnation – have yet to come up against Romanian opposition. Match background • Deposed Romanian champions CFR never played in the UEFA Cup group stage. However, they did compete in last season's UEFA Champions League group phase, triumphing 2-1 at AS Roma on Matchday 1 before finishing bottom of their section. • A 2-1 play-off round win against FK Sarajevo ended a five-game run without a home victory for CFR, stretching back to the semi-finals of the 2005 UEFA Intertoto Cup. • København competed in the last two UEFA Cup group stages, missing the cut in 2007/08 but making it to the Round of 32 last season. • København matched their biggest European away win in their first overseas game of 2009/10, prevailing 6-0 against Montenegro's FK Mogren in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round. Team facts • CFR – the intials stand for Căile Ferate Române, Romania's national railway – are coached by former SC Braga and FC Porto right-back António Conceição, more widely known as Toni. He led CFR to Romanian Cup success last season. • København are led by former Norwegian international Ståle Solbakken, who represented the club as a midfielder at the end of a career which also took in spells at Hamarkameratene, Lillestrøm SK, Wimbledon FC and Aalborg BK. He won two Danish titles as a player and last season won his third since becoming a coach in 2006, making five in total. • Solbakken's playing career came to an abrupt end at København when he suffered a heart attack in training in March 2001. Despite being pronounced clinically dead, he recovered and now has a pacemaker fitted. • Solbakken's only experience of Romanian opposition came in a 1998 friendly game, which Norway drew 0-0 at home against Romania. • København were founded in 1992 following a merger between Kjøbenhavns BK and B1903 København. KB met Romanian opposition in the second round of the 1981/82 European Champion Clubs' Cup, winning 1-0 at home against FC Universitatea Craiova but losing 4-1 away. • AC Sparta Praha visit København on Matchday 2, while PSV Eindhoven are at home against CFR on the same night, 1 October. Next it will be the turn of the youth players in both the men’s (Under-17 and Under-19) and women’s categories (Under-19) to compete for European honours from May to July, when the final rounds of their European champion- ships will be taking place. At senior level, however, the players only have European club competition medals to contend for this year. The national teams are not dormant though. At the end of March, the UEFA EURO 2004 qualifiers move into their criti- cal phase and, come autumn, the 15 teams who will join hosts Portugal in the final round next year will be known. There could be a lot of drama to come. I am happy to report that with UEFA EURO 2004 only 15 months away, preparations are well advanced, and EURO 2004, SA, the joint operation set up by UEFA and the Portuguese Football Federation, is running at full speed.

What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Disaster struck the final of the Champion Clubs’ Cup between Juventus and Liverpool before a ball had even been kicked, leaving 39 spectators dead and injuring many more during what should have been a celebration of football. Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims.

    Edinburgh Napier University Business School Reframing Scottish Football: Strategy and the short-term nature of the football industry Stephen Robertson Doctor of Business Administration A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Edinburgh Napier University, for the award of Doctor of Business Administration July 2015 “In human behavior there was always uncertainty and risk. The goal of the Oakland front office was simply to minimize the risk. Their solution wasn’t perfect, it was just better than the hoary alternative, rendering decisions by gut feeling.” Lewis (2011 p.136) Abstract Despite football being deeply entrenched in Scottish culture it is under- researched from a business perspective. This research develops a conceptual framework that views professional football clubs from a number of different perspectives. It draws on strategic management literature since this views the firm as the intersection between internal competence, customer perception and competition within an industry. A review of previous sports business research highlighted five main themes that were used to create a structure for the analysis: on-field performance, attendance, finance, the playing squad and the manager. These themes were used as frames to view the firms within the industry from a number of different perspectives. Each frame allows a different aspect of the firm to be considered singly in turn and then collectively to develop a deeper understanding of the existing frames in use within the industry. The research is based on a pragmatic philosophy that allows mixed methods to be combined to provide both an objective and subjective view of the industry. The subjective view was drawn from five interviews with senior figures within Scottish professional football.
