Asolo Rep Continues Its Rep Season with Born Yesterday; Acclaimed Director Peter Amster Helms the Classic American Comedy; Opens February 10 BORN YESTERDAY Page 1 of 6 ***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*** January 12, 2017 ASOLO REP CONTINUES ITS REP SEASON WITH BORN YESTERDAY; ACCLAIMED DIRECTOR PETER AMSTER HELMS THE CLASSIC AMERICAN COMEDY; OPENS FEBRUARY 10 "As much fun as if born today." — Curtain Up (SARASOTA, January 12, 2017) — Asolo Repertory Theatre continues its 2016-17 season and the fifth and final year of its American Character Project with Academy Award®-winner Garson Kanin's irresistible girl-meets-world comedy BORN YESTERDAY. Directed by Asolo Rep favorite and Joseph Jefferson Award nominee Peter Amster, BORN YESTERDAY previews February 8 and 9, opens February 10 and runs in rotating rep through April 15 in the Mertz Theatre, located in the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. Bombshell Billie Dawn has always gotten by on looks alone. But when she moves to Washington, D.C. with her corrupt boyfriend, junkyard magnate Harry Brock, he needs Billie to be more than just a pretty face. To help her fit in with the capital's upper echelon, Harry hires Paul Verrall, a young reporter, to educate Billie, but Paul ends up learning quite a bit from her in this classic comedy that reminds us all not to judge a book by its cover. “BORN YESTERDAY is a tremendously witty, timely and clever play, but, above all, it is overflowing with joy,” said Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards. “In a rep -more- BORN YESTERDAY Page 2 of 6 season that kicks off with two gripping political dramas, The Great Society and The Originalist, BORN YESTERDAY, under the helm of comic genius Peter Amster, will be nothing short of a delightfully funny and surprisingly touching theatrical experience.” Broadway's Christina DeCicco stars as Billie Dawn. Ms. DeCicco starred as Eva Perón opposite Ricky Martin in the most recent Broadway revival of Evita, and Arachne in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. She also played Glinda in the national tour of Wicked. Chicago-based actor Norm Boucher, who previously appeared in Hero: The Musical and Fannie Brice: America's Funny Girl at Asolo Rep, plays Harry Brock. This season, Mr. Boucher also plays Mayor Richard J. Daley and General Earle Wheeler in The Great Society at Asolo Rep. Christopher Kelly plays reporter Paul Verrall. Mr. Kelly, who also portrays Robert McNamara, Rep. Wilbur Mills and Stanley Levison in The Great Society this season, recently appeared in Pericles at the Public Theater and the Drama Desk-nominated Moby Dick at the Ohio Theatre. BORN YESTERDAY is one of the most famous plays by acclaimed American playwright, screenwriter and author Garson Kanin. His works for the stage also include The Smile of the World, The Rat Race, The Live Wire, and Peccadillo, which served as the inspiration for Joe DiPietro's Living on Love. Mr. Kanin co-wrote four screenplays with actress Ruth Gordon, including the Academy Award nominated A Double Life, Adam's Rib, and Pat and Mike. The original production of BORN YESTERDAY opened on Broadway in February 1946, with Judy Holliday as Billie Dawn. Both the play and the beloved 1950 film adaptation proved to be star vehicles for Ms. Holliday, who garnered an Academy Award for her performance. Robert Perdziola, who was the set and costume designer for last season's stunning production of Living on Love, will design the set and costumes for BORN YESTERDAY, once again infusing the glamour that enchanted Asolo Rep audiences. Director Peter Amster helmed Asolo Rep's celebrated production of Living on Love last season. Throughout his nine seasons as an Associate Artist at Asolo Rep, he also directed The Matchmaker, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, You Can't Take it With You, Fallen Angels, Deathtrap, and more. He has directed all across the country, including at Steppenwolf, the Goodman, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, American Conservatory Theater, Syracuse Stage, American Repertory Theater and more. “Garson Kanin crafted a play that succeeds in being both a romantic comedy and a great American cautionary tale," said Director Peter Amster. "The comedy arises from its embrace of a Pygmalion-like transformation: Billie Dawn, the 'dumb blonde' (and one of the greatest comic inventions of the American stage), has been told to 'wise up' to the ways of D.C. by her rich thug of a boyfriend. But instead of becoming a lady like Eliza Doolittle, Billie becomes an informed, somewhat articulate citizen. What emerges from her newly acquired grammar of citizenship is a civics lesson for all of us: we, the people, must stay awake and engaged if America is to endure.” -more- BORN YESTERDAY Page 3 of 6 CAST (In Order of Appearance) JILLIAN COURTNEY.…………………………….…………………………………..….Helen CHRISTOPHER KELLY*..……………………………….……………….………Paul Verrall JACOB SHERBURNE……...…………………………………………...………..Eddie Brock ROB GLAUZ………………………………………………………………………….....Bellhop WYATT McNEIL……………..………………………………………………………….Bellhop NORM BOUCHER*…………………………………………………...…………..Harry Brock MIKE PEREZ……………………………………...…………..……....…..Assistant Manager CHRISTINA DeCICCO*...……………………………………………..…………..Billie Dawn ERIC HISSOM*..………………………………………………………..…………..Ed Devery MICHAEL D. Beginning December 27, 1996, The Museum of Modern Art presents Born Yesterday: The Films of Judy Holliday, a complete retrospective of Holliday's short but exhilarating career. Holliday's experience working with director George Cukor on Winged Victory led to a collaboration with Cukor, Garson Kanin, and Kanin's wife Ruth Gordon, resulting in Adam's Rib (1949), Born Yesterday (1950), The Marrying Kind (1952), and // Should Happen To You (1952). She went on to make Phffft (1954), The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956), Full of Life (1956), and, for director Vincente Minnelli, Bells Are Ringing (1960). -more- 11 West 53 Street, New York, New York 10019 Tel: 212-708-9400 Fax: 212-708-9889 2 The Department of Film and Video and Sony Pictures Entertainment are restoring the six films that Holliday made at Columbia Pictures from 1950 to 1956.

American Studies, University of Massachusetts Boston A Jewish-created urban and cosmopolitan working girl feminism persisted in the 1950s as a cultural alternative to the suburban, domestic consumerism critiqued so eloquently by Betty Friedan in The Feminine Mystique . The film persona of Jewish, Academy Award-winning actress Judy Holliday embodied this working girl feminism. Audiences viewed her portrayals of popular front working girl heroines in three films written by the Jewish writer and director Garson Kanin, sometimes in association with his wife, the actress Ruth Gordon, and directed by the Jewish director George Cukor in the early 1950s: Born Yesterday (1950), The Marrying Kind (1952), and It Should Happen to You (1954).

It can seemingly be linked to the distinctiveness of that region as compared to the rest of the United States—a distinctiveness that has been brought about by historical, geographical, socio logical and economi c factors. Basing the discussion on the theory of Philip Thomson, who d efines the grotesque as "the unresolved clash between in compatibles in work and re sponse," various critical approaches to the Southern grotesque are examined, all of which are found to be too all-embracing. An e ffort is then made t o analyse the grotesque as displayed particularly in Caldwell, Capote, Faulkner, Goyen, McCullers, O'Connor and W elty.

A 1111gget ofne111a Vol. II, No. 13 Columbia College, Columbia, CA Feb. 23, 1983 Columbia Loses Ellen Stewart by Doug Scbwyn Drama students at Columbia College are seriously concerned over the school district's decision to transfer drama teach er Ellen Stewart from Columbia to Modesto. Ellen has been teaching here for the past twelve years, carrying the bulk of training actors for college drama produc tions while instructor Dave Purdy has done most of the producing and directing. Ellen also teaches inprovisational theater and has produced, cast and directed the winter travelling productions in the past. If she is transferred, beginning next September, Dave Purdy will be solely responsible for all the training, casting and production at Columbia College. Ellen feels depressed about transfer ring. She has given twelve years of her life to the drama community here, and has developed a strong rapport with serious students in this area. Many of the actors she has trained have gone on the perform ances with the Sierra Repertory Theater and other professional theaters. Ellen's salary will not be increased. The cost of commuting the three hour, 120 mile round trip to Modest and of child care for her four- year-old daughter will substantialy reduce her standard of living. Many people believe that the Columbia drama department will suffer radically if Ellen leaves. The school district feel that, faced with budget cuts, there is no choice in the matter. Drama student Sinder McLeod feels that, "economics is a weak reason to deprive Tuolumne County of the cultural advantages of a strong drama depart ment." Written by Garson Kanin, the play premiered on Broadway in 1946. Susi Damilano will direct the San Francisco Playhouse revival. Harry, a ruthless, thuggish millionaire—with his showgirl fiancée, Billie, in tow—comes to Washington to bribe a senator and enrich his business interests. He soon hires a reporter to clean up Billie’s image; but as she awakens to a world full of possibilities, she starts to question corruption’s stranglehold over the disadvantaged. “When I read this play, I was immediately struck by how resoundingly its message still rings after 70 years,” said Producing Director Susi Damilano. “The timeless story of integrity triumphing over political self-interest feels as relevant as ever—and, I hope, will provide us with an opportunity to reflect on our own human nature.” The cast of Born Yesterday will feature Millie Brooks*, Michael Torres*, Anthony Fusco*, Ed Berkeley*, Jason Kapoor*, Louis Parnell*, Derek Fischer, Terry Bamberger, Casey Robert Spiegel, Marty Lee Jones, and Melissa Quine. • THE SEVEN MINUTES Irving Wallace
First published in Great Britain by New English Library Ltd, in 1969 Copyright © 1969 by Irving Wallace THE SEVEN MINUTES Irving Wallace By eleven o'clock in the morning the sun had come out, and now the women of Oakwood, most of them housewives in summer attire and most of them at the wheels of their own cars, were converging on the business district to do their shopping. In the suddenly thickening traffic, the green two-door Ford coupe with a nasty dent in its front fender was at last forced to slow down. Slumped in the seat beside the driver, Otto Kellog grunted his displeasure, then sat up impatiently to get his bearings. He resented delays at a time like this, when he was anxious about what he must soon do. He wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. There was a jarring screech as Iverson, who was driving the car, slammed on the brake, muttering, 'Goddam women drivers.' 'Yeah,' said Keliog. 'Wish they'd get moving.' In the rear the third occupant of the coupe, Eubank, older, more tolerant, less often exposed to the outside world than his companions, seemed to be enjoying the interval. He had brought himself forward from the back seat to peer over Iverson's shoulder through the windshield. 'So this is Oakwood,' he said. 'Attractive. I don't know how many times I've been out this way, but I guess I never paid much attention before.' 'Nothing so different,' said Iverson, easing his foot off the brake. 'It's still Los Angeles County.' 'Well, it just looks more prosperous and settled down,' said Eubank.
