Lady of the Lake Renaissance Faire began in 2002, offering visitors an opportunity to step back in time to a magical and enchanting land created to represent an authentic English village. The Faire is an established member of a national Renaissance Faire circuit and features over 100 performers, representing various entertainments of the time – Knights in armor, gypsies, fire-eaters, pirates, dancers, merchants, peasants, historical characters and a variety of musicians. Artisans fill the village, working in mediums such as pottery, leather work, sculpture, and candle making. The crafts and entertainment combine with thematic games and foods to create a glimpse of marketplace celebrations of life in the 16th century. All proceeds from the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire benefit the Education Foundation of Lake County, Florida, a 501(3)(c) organization. The Intrigue November 2nd marks the one year Anniversary of the Gunpowder plot and Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up Parliament. To distract the King, he has been invited with his wife, Queen Anne of Denmark, to the Shire of Shrewsbury to enjoy the celebrations being provided to entertain the King, His Court, and the visiting Nobility at the annual Autumn Festival. As conspiracies are common at Court, His Majesty’s men are attempting to ferret out other schemers. The Guards, led by Captain Malcolm Wolfe (Malcolm Paul Edward Michael Anthony Joseph Wolfe to his friends) accompanies the King and Nobility, protecting the peace, and carrying heavy objects (or people) when needed.     LINGERIE FRANCAISE EXHIBITION PRESS KIT THE HISTORY OF FRENCH LINGERIE AT THE SAGAMORE HOTEL MIAMI BEACH Continuing its world tour, the Lingerie Francaise exhibition will be presented at the famous Sagamore Hotel Miami Beach during the Art Basel Fair in Miami Beach from November 29th through December 6th, 2016. Free and open to all, the exhibition showcases the ingeniousness and creativity of French lingerie which, for over a century and a half, has been worn by millions of women worldwide. The exhibition is an immersion into the collections of eleven of the most prestigious French brands: AUBADE, BARBARA, CHANTELLE, EMPREINTE, IMPLICITE, LISE CHARMEL, LOU, LOUISA BRACQ, MAISON LEJABY, PASSIONATA and SIMONE PÉRÈLE. With both elegance and playfulness, the story of an exceptional craft unfolds in a space devoted to contemporary art. The heart of this historic exhibition takes place in the Game Room of the Sagamore Hotel. Beginning with the first corsets of the 1880’s, the presentation documents the custom-made creations of the 1930’s, showcases the lingerie of the 1950’s that was the first to use nylon, and culminates with the widespread use of Lycra® in the 1980’s, an epic era of forms and fabrics. This section focuses on contemporary and future creations; including the Lingerie Francaise sponsored competition’s winning entry by Salima Abes, a recent graduate from the university ESMOD Paris. An exclusive collection of approximately one hundred pieces will be exhibited, all of them emblematic of a technique, textile, and/or fashion innovation. A selection of landmark pieces will trace both the history of intimacy and the narrative of women’s liberation.

Because of the challenges in working with knit fabric, updating a t-shirt is the perfect compromise. Our goal is to have someone look at our top and say “that was a t-shirt?!” All hemlines need to be removed and restyled and the neckline needs to be either ruffled (size small and some medium) or trimmed. Here are some guidelines that we are looking for. Simply sewing a decorative stitch or zigzag over the existing hemline (sleeves and bottom hem) does not make visual changes to the t-shirt. Please cut off the existing hemline and if you like, you can make it shorter. If you have a serger, you can finish the edge prior to hemming but because the knit does not ravel it is not necessary. You also do not need to turn over the edge prior to hemming. Sleeves Match the sleeves and cut off both hems at the same time. You can cut straight or at an angle and make it a cap sleeve Use a decorative stitch for the hemming, variegated thread looks great! Use either white or black thread in the bottom as variegated thread is expensive. Remember to sew on the right side with your finger on the bottom feeling for the fabric edge. Watch for those sales and coupons!! Sulky blendables, 30 weight, 100% cotton is very nice to use. If you hem with a straight stitch, make it a little longer perhaps 3.0 and add some elastic to make it gathered at the hem edge.

    1545 Italian Courtesan Clothing by Baroness Briana Etain MacKorkhill hen we think of Italy, we should remember that in the period we are discussing, it was divided into various duchies, princedoms, Papal Wstates and even a Republic. Such divisiveness contributed to the political intrigue and economic situations that kept such territories in a state of flux and contention with each other. Each state not only vied for economic advantages, but also scrambled for Papal sponsorship and favor. A new role for women gainst this tumultuous background, there arose a new role a woman could Aassume, that of the “honest” courtesan. Giovanni Burchard, the chronicler of Alexander VI (Borgia) was perhaps the first to use the phrase “courtesanae honestae” making explicit its derivation from the papal curia. He differentiated between them and common prostitutes, offering some piquant accounts of some of the games played at social affairs. And in Rome, according to a document in the Archivo di Stato Florentino the “honest courtesan” held the first of 3 classes of prostitutes. They were the “regents and goddesses” from nearly the beginning. An honest courtesan was independent, strong-willed, well-educated, liberated and often elevated to be an aristocratic companion. She was frequently fluent in several languages, achieved prominence in the arts – as poets, musicians, etc. – and would use her knowledge of classical literature to enhance her image. She was at once, companion, lover, confidant, and even advisor in matters both political and economic. “Continual dualism of free and yet bound”, best describes the balancing of a courtesan’s life. This all in a time when women had very little freedom otherwise.

    History of the Gunpowder Plot & Guy Fawkes Night Four hundred years ago, in 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement. They wanted to kill King James and the king’s leaders. Houses of Parliament, London Why did Guy Fawkes want to kill King James 1st and the king’s leaders? When Queen Elizabeth 1st took the throne of England she made some laws against the Roman Catholics. Guy Fawkes was one of a small group of Catholics who felt that the government was treating Roman Catholics unfairly. They hoped that King James 1st would change the laws, but he didn't. Catholics had to practise their religion in secret. There were even fines for people who didn't attend the Protestant church on Sunday or on holy days. James lst passed more laws against the Catholics when he became king. What happened - the Gunpowder Plot A group of men led by Robert Catesby, plotted to kill King James and blow up the Houses of Parliament, the place where the laws that governed England were made. Guy Fawkes was one of a group of men The plot was simple - the next time Parliament was opened by King James l, they would blow up everyone there with gunpowder. The men bought a house next door to the parliament building. The house had a cellar which went under the parliament building. They planned to put gunpowder under the house and blow up parliament and the king.

    Spanish Farthingale Dress This dress has a separate bodice, under skirt and over skirt, as well as a partlet at the neck.. The bodice opens in the back, the under skirt opens at the side, and the over skirt opens in the front. There are no fitting seams in the bodice. Although I did not add boning to the bodice, you certainly could. It would help to keep the front point down and add some body to the front of the bodice. The under skirt was made with muslin in the back to conserve fabric, which was certainly done in the 16th Century. The over skirt closes in the front under the point of the bodice. The straight sleeves have a gathered cap. This dress is worn with a Spanish farthingale and can also have a bum roll in the back for the support of the cartridge pleating. (see the bum roll pattern under the French Farthingale Dress Spanish Farthingale Cut 2 from each of the pattern pieces, adding ¼” for seam allowance (This can be made using muslin or similar fabric) When tracing the pattern, make sure that you mark all of the lines for the boning. Sew the seams for each set of the pattern so that you end up with two single layer farthingale skirts. Then stitch the two together at the bottom with right sides together. Finish the side openings by turning the seam allowance in and hand or machine stitching it closed. The top is finished with a piece of bias tape, leaving enough at the sides in order to tie the farthingale into place.
