We Finally See Rockwell, Williams in FX's First 'Fosse/Verdon' Trailer 02.25.2019 FX's upcoming eight-episode limited series, Fosse/Verdon, unpacks the turbulent five-decade relationship of legendary Hollywood director and choreographer, Bob Fosse (Sam Rockwell), and his wife, muse and star in her own right, Gwen Verdon (Michelle Williams). Their relationship starts as a director-star cliche and then evolves into something much more complicated as Fosse fuels his manic creativity with drugs, alcohol and sex. Verdon, meanwhile, reaches the height of her career as a Broadway triple threat and multiple Tony winner but watches Fosse stay in the spotlight as she fades into age and obscurity. Still, she remains his unrecognized collaborator even as their marriage unravels. Eventually, Fosse forges a connection with Ann Reinking (Margaret Qualley), an up-and-coming Broadway dancer who has all the talent and tenacity of a young Verdon. She hopes to follow in Verdon's footsteps, but may not have the stomach to put up with everything Fosse demands. Surrounding the couple are a coterie of fellow artists, friends, collaborators, and rivals: playwright and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky (Norbert Leo Butz); former modern dancer- turned-homemaker Joan Simon (Aya Cash); Joan's husband, playwright Neil Simon (Nate Corddry); and theater producer and director Hal Prince (Evan Handler). The series is executive produced by Rockwell, Williams, Thomas Kail, Steven Levenson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Joel Fields and George Stelzner. Levenson wrote the premiere episode, which is directed by Kail. Nicole Fosse, daughter of the couple, serves as key creative consultant, co-executive producer and keeper of the Verdon Fosse legacy. -

WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?: INTERSECTIONS OF POWER, DOMESTICITY, AND SEXUALITY RELATING TO RAP AND SONG IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON By Tia Marie Harvey A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree Musicology—Master of Arts 2019 ABSTRACT WHO TELLS YOUR STORY?: INTERSECTIONS OF POWER, DOMESTICITY, AND SEXUALITY RELATING TO RAP AND SONG IN THE MUSICAL HAMILTON By Tia Marie Harvey In January 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: An American Musical premiered at The Public Theater in New York City. Later that year it moved to Broadway with an engagement at the Richard Rodgers Theater, followed by productions in Chicago and London. Commercially successful and critically acclaimed, Hamilton continues to hold significant cultural relevance in 2019. As a result of this musical’s cultural significance, it has the ability to communicate positive, but also limiting, aspects of our society. In this thesis, I examine the concept of rap as a musical language of power. To do this, I assert that characters in Hamilton who have power, and particularly when expressing that power, do so through rap. In contrast, when characters don’t have power, or are entering realms of the powerless (i.e. spaces gendered female), they do so through lyrical song. In chapter 1, I set up the divide between rap and song as it primarily translates among male characters and class. Chapter 2 is focused on the domestic sphere, and in chapter 3 I discuss sexuality. In the conclusion of this thesis, I revisit the character of Eliza and explore the perceived power of her role as storyteller and the way in which the themes I discuss illuminate many missed opportunities to present an interpretation of America’s founding that is truly revolutionary. -

In opera, music is the primary element, supported by the set and costumes. The set and costumes provide a visual interpretation of the music. In film, music and sound play a supporting role. Music and sound create an ambiance in films that aid in telling the story. I consider the musical to be an equal and reciprocal balance of music and vision. More importantly, a successful musical is defined by its plot, music, and visual elements, and how well they are integrated. Observing the transformation of the musical and analyzing many different genres of concert music, I realize that each new concept of transformation always blends traditional and contemporary elements, no matter how advanced the concept is or was at the time. Through my analysis of three musicals, I shed more light on where this ii transformation may be heading and what tradition may be replaced by a new concept, and vice versa. -

His finger is in so many pies he must have stolen a couple extra hands. How am I supposed to write a review for Hamilton: The Revolution , if all I want to do is hug it to my chest and never let go? Jeremy McCarter. I adored Lin's comments and insights on the songs, but I think I actually ended up enjoying Jeremy McCarter's essays more than Lin's notes. Actually, I didn't expect it to be emotional at all. A hip hop twist Say No To This, she pleaded. The thick paper. In addition, Miranda has written more than funny, revealing footnotes for his award-winning libretto, the full text of which is published here. Throughout his life, like so many leaders of the time, he allowed or used slavery to advance his I hereby award this book ten million stars and a book hangover. The only people who are calling for one are those who support the hate and the racism in the first place. More books by Lin- Manuel Miranda. The double-sided gold badge bears enamel decorations. The Hairy Dieters: Fast Food. Everything this man does is smart, thoughtful, and complex. Economic Lessons from the Musical Hamilton The musical Hamilton is the most popular musical in recent history and might be the best single album one could use to teach economic concepts. We explore how the songs in Hamilton can be used to teach about opportunity cost, trade-offs, time preferences and time-inconsistent preferences, the Federal Reserve System and central banking, economic freedom, and more. We also provide discussion questions that educators could use to teach concepts presented in Hamilton. Matthew C. Rousu† Courtney A. Introduction While it is still the primary way instructors are teaching economics, educators are slow- ly shifting away from the traditional “chalk-and-talk” method of instructing (Becker & Watts, 1996, 2001; Becker, Becker, & Watts, 2006; Watts & Schaur, 2011). Some economics instructors are using non-traditional methods to teach, including using works of art (Watts & Christopher, 2012; Al-Bahrani, Holder, Patel, & Wooten, 2016), historical novels (Cotti & Johnson, 2012), mov- ies (Mateer, O’Roark, & Holder, 2016; Mateer & Stephenson, 2011), television series (Kuester, Mateer, & Youderian, 2014; Ghent, Grant & Lesica, 2011), and social media (Al-Bahrani & Patel, 2015). By incorporating these alternative methods, educators are attempting to better reach their students. Yet another way teachers are innovating is by using music in their courses, and many in- structors have touted the benefits of this practice (Lawson, Hall, & Mateer, 2008; Krasnozhon, 2013; Tinari & Khandke, 2000; Hall & Lawson, 2008; Holder, Hoffer, Al-Bahrani, & Lindahl, 2015). To this point, economists touting the use of music to teach have illustrated how multiple songs from multiple sources can be used. -

Amid the darkness looming over the nation following Sunday's shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., Broadway's brightest stars shone at the 70th annual Tony Awards at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Host James Corden and the night's biggest winners paid emotional tribute to the 49 people killed in the attack and the more than 50 people wounded. Earlier in the day, organizers had released a statement saying that the show would go on and be dedicated to the families and friends of those affected by the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. "Our hearts are heavy for the unimaginable tragedy that happened last night in Orlando," the organizers said. Corden, host of The Late Late Show, opened the ceremony with a brief message about the mass shooting: "Good evening. All around the world, people are trying to come to terms with the horrific events that took place in Orlando this morning.
