After the match directors briefing the competitors quickly go to each of the four ranges and put their names on the lists which determine the times of their shoots. The trick is to guess when you will be ready to shoot each event because if your name is called and you are not present and ready to compete your name goes to the end of the list. This would be painful in the case of the Mover event which saw the last competitor finish at 7.15 pm. With so many shooters I am not sure how they even managed to get everyone through by then. We have been assured that there will be a second mover operating next year. This year the weather was kind to us, sunny and calm. The terrain in Kansas is very flat for miles and miles and sometimes the wind is so strong that you sway about which is especially problematic when shooting the Mover, it’s like shooting while standing in a small boat. This fun shoot hosted by The Windygap Regulators has always been known as a good warm-up match before EOT. After setting up camp and partaking in a cold adult beverage, along comes another RV holding the rest of Team Kiwi shooting this match. Rooster and Dusty Barrels, along with Daisy Rae and Laredo Kid were keen on catching up with our adventures so far. Ten stages over two days with some great cowboy action shooters was a recipe for a great time. All of Team Kiwi commented on how close the targets were. My reply ‘you haven’t seen anything yet. Just wait till EOT’. Lightning Jack ended up winning the match with Nightshooter shooting a clean match and 4th Duelist, Lindis Ranger 3rd Duelist, Rooster 1st Young Gun (and a girlfriend), Dusty Barrels 2nd Wrangler, and Tuscon 3rd Senior Gunfighter. As soon as we had said our goodbyes, the two RV’s began the five-hour run down to End of Trail. The first thing any newcomer says when they first see the shooting grounds at ‘Founders Ranch’ is ‘Wow it’s big, look at all the RV’s. Look at all the ranges and the buildings’. The rest of Team Kiwi, Miss Kitty Russell, Bobby ‘Yeah, we’re coming too’. Steele and Witch Doctor, rolled into camp shortly after as they had been out to a party. Team Kiwi was now complete.

20 www.pistolnz.org.nz Bullshooter #242 Our first two days were practice days (shooting with Tex) Thursday was the beginning of main match. Four stages with some gun-smithing thrown in. You’ve just got to were shot each day but the nerves were highly strung and jump at the chance of getting all the new gadgets fitted on edge for the first couple. Front sight, front sight! Matt to your guns with all those gun experts there, and the gun Black, last year’s winner, was shooting on the same posse engraver was also looking for work. “Oh, and that’s a nice as Lightning Jack & Tuscon. He wasn’t going as fast as leather rig, how much?” I think there was quite a bit of usual but was steady and calculating. A tactic that would pocket money spent! eventually see him into 2nd place overall. Our posse would actually end up having five shooters in the top fifty Then came side match day. We shot some speed matches overall for the match so the shooting was fast and furious. but the competition was FAST. Deuce Stevens and SASS Kicker seemed to dominate here. The opening ceremony With shooting only taking up three hours of the day there that evening was the official start to EOT ’16. The colours was plenty of time to catch up with old friends and ‘chew were paraded with Lightning Jack our standard bearer. the fat’, do some more shopping (SASS = Single Action ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and the ‘Pledge of Allegiance Shopping Society?) or go back to the RV and relax and to The Flag’ was followed by a couple of speeches, then clean guns until the evenings entertainment. It’s at about drinks. this time you know you’re not going to fit everything into your large suitcase for the trip home and start working out ‘plan B’. Lindis Ranger’s rifle was working well and Roosters pistols still needed some fine-tuning. Rooster’s communication skills were unquestionably superb as shown with the harem of young cowgirls he was associating with. It rained a few times at the match, but not enough to disrupt the shooting. The type of red soil just turns to red mud, but if left to drain away and dry out, just turns back to red concrete. Miss Kitty’s golf cart seemed to get plenty of use. The RV park is about 300 metres from the ‘main street’ and the stages and seems to be uphill both ways. Any hint of exhaustion after shooting was finished for the day and Rooster would sprint up to Miss Kitty’s RV, pick up the golf cart and help us back to our RV with all our gear, our shopping and our gun carts.

It’s amazing the wealth that was here back in the towns early days. This was due to the mining of silver, gold and copper. In the days of Wyatt Earp, they feasted on delicacies like canned peaches and oysters. Fire ravaged the town on at least three occasions so it was rebuilt using stone and adobe brick. Wealth in Tombstone finally dried up due to the silver mines flooding, caused by the pumps unable to work because of dirty diesel. We were now onto the final leg of our road trip heading for Las Vegas via the Dillon factory in Scottsdale/Phoenix and then Wickenburg while Dusty Barrels and family headed for the Grand Canyon. Wickenburg is another town with a rich history of mining and ranching and has a museum with a wonderful collection of western art.

What we didn’t realize was the shock of going from 40c down to -4c. We froze our butts off for the first week we “In a world of compromise some don’t”, for some reason were home. that seemed a perfect fit for the two H&K firearms I It was a great trip. owned at the time. An ex Bundeswehr G3 rifle and P7 Pistol; both performed perfectly, no malfunctions, very End of Trail is an experience that is always remembered good accuracy and even though the G3 was utilitarian in fondly. ‘Come for the shooting, stay for the people’ is a its design it was solid and the roller locked action always phrase SASS uses, and it’s true. struck me as being a very clever solution. The P7 with its Cowboy action shooters were always coming up and gas delayed locking and squeeze cocking action was pretty saying ‘I shot with you guys here in two thousand and left field at the time but like the G3 it just plain worked whatever. It’s great to see you again. Anything you need?’. and with a fixed barrel it was the most accurate 9mm I have ever owned. So if you can, make the trip...... When the opportunity to visit the H&K factory in Oberndorf You won’t be disappointed! came up I jumped at the chance; I spent 2 days looking (Article and Photos by R Finlayson) at the factory and shooting H&K Pistols, Rifles and sub- machineguns. The visit is an article all in itself but if there was one overriding thing I took from the visit it was H&K’s commitment to quality. The factory as you would expect was high tech and filled with the latest CNC mills but what surprised me most was the amount of hand finishing and inspection I saw. CNC mills can make just about anything Gun Oils that Extend the Life of Metal but the H&K people were adamant that hand finishing and inspection is essential if you want a first class firearm. For the purpose of this article I will focus on the H&K • Cleans carbon residue SFP9 pistol as it H&K’s newest pistol and it is real option for Production class. • Ensures smooth action The SFP9 or as it’s known in the USA the VP9 is a • Dry-to-touch lubrication conventional 9mm duty type pistol with a modified Browning tilt barrel locking system; to be honest it looks • Protects against rust similar to a number of other modern striker fired pistols, but don’t let appearances fool you the SFP9 has a number of clever features that set it apart from its competition. The crackle type finish on the grips is before. The reason it felt good is that it’s fully single action comfortable and feels very adhesive. and does not partially cock the striker when pulling like a Glock does. The trigger guard has an undercut and this combined with the beavertail style tang allows you to get a very There is a bit of take-up but it transitions into a clear high grip on the pistol. In fact the first time I picked it up release point and the 5.5 pound break is easy to control I immediately noticed how close my hand seemed to the and the reset is quite short and very clearly felt and heard. bore axis. The decent trigger combined with the high grip made it a very comfortable pistol to shoot. I shot the pistol over two The SFP9 is offered with 3 replaceable back straps and sessions and let a number of other shooters try it out as six interchangeable side plates; this gives the shooter 27 well. different options to configure the grip and as I found out getting it perfect is easy and very worthwhile. As you would expect there were no malfunctions whatsoever. During my visit to H&K in Germany I was It’s hard to measure how much quicker a perfect grip given a demonstration of the reliability that included limp makes you but with a grip configured SFP9 I ran a club wristing and firing the pistol upside down, there were no IPSC course quicker than I did with my SP01 Shadow. malfunctions. At 20m off a rest in Germany using a well worn SFP9 I could get the groups down to 50mm using Ruag and Sellior & Bellot 115 grain loads Police ammunition. I suspect if I had some 124gn loads the groups may have been even tighter as the SFP9 I shot in New Zealand liked that projectile weight best. I really liked the SFP9, it points so nicely and the ability to set the grip up perfectly for your hand is a major advantage. Accuracy was very good, fit and finish excellent and having seen how they are made I have total confidence in the build quality. John Herbert

The slide is a typical of the breed with a blocky appearance with serrations both at the front and rear for ease of cocking but H&K goes one step further and adds two ears to the back of the slide. H&K calls them “charging supports” and they are in the perfect place for quickly racking the slide. They are removable should the shooter prefer a cleaner slide and the replacements parts fit flush. The sights on the SFP9 are steel and of the low profile combat type. The rear sight has two white luminescent dots while the front has a single dot. The sights are a lot better than the plastic sights that adorn similar pistols and while the layout of sights is a personal preference I had no problems obtaining a quick and clear sight picture. As a bonus the SFP9 shot point of aim straight out of the box. As mentioned when I first handled the pistol I was surprised Editors Note: If members would like to share their at just how well it pointed, the H&K P30 which looks like thoughts on a product and write a review and/or a hammer operated version of the SFP9 points nicely as advertise the product under reveiw, let the editor know!
