    Great War in the Villages Project The Morris Brothers (sons of Charles Henry and Emily Morris). Prior to the commencement of the Great War there were two families that shared the same surname of Morris living within the parishes of Wellesbourne. The family of Henry Charles Morris and Emily, his wife, were relative newcomers to the area whereas John Henry and Alice Morris could trace their roots within Wellesbourne to at least the 18th century. It appears that the families were not closely related. Entries in the local South Warwickshire newspapers during the years of the Great War suggested that there were two members of Henry Charles’s family that served in that war, his sons Harry and Jesse. Henry Charles Morris was born during the early months of 1867 in the south Oxfordshire village of Horspath. He married Emily Pinn in Headington, Oxfordshire during the spring or early summer of 1892. She was also a native of the county. Recordsi suggest that the couple had 11 children yet only 6 survived infancy. Harry Morris. Private, Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry (Believed). Harry was born on the 13th October 1894 in Headington Oxfordshire and subsequently baptised in the Holy Trinity Church of Headington Quarry on 25th November of the same year. The family then appeared to move around the country possibly as his father sought work. They arrived in Wellesbourne around January 1905 when his son Harry was registered to join the village schoolii, the family having previously lived in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire. The 1911 census, the last prior to the commencement of the Great War, indicates that Harry, then aged 16 years worked as a General Labourer.

St Peter’s has a wonderful combination of fairly traditional – though enlivened – worship and all sorts of creative ways to engage people. It’s showing some impressive levels of health and a real determination to address others that need more attention. As well as its regular patterns of worship, St James also has all sorts of outreach opportunities through its location in the estate of Walton Hall (now an estate). You’ll see that ‘empowering leadership’ is an area of strength, and we are looking for a new priest to continue to empower the people of God and to build on the very good foundations that are already in place. In a Diocese with a long commitment to reconciliation through the remarkable ministry of our Cathedral, it’s very heartening that St Peter’s is committed to being ‘Inspired by Jesus to forgive, encourage and serve’.

    CHURCH BUILDINGS COUNCIL Casework policy and precedents December 2020 Context The policies and precedents set out below have all arisen from casework considered by the Council at its recent meetings. They show how it has approached various policy matters and practical questions and are recorded by the Council to guide future decisions. They are published for the information of Diocesan Advisory Committees, and for the benefit of parishes considering changes to buildings. They help to indicate how the Council will approach matters and the matters that the Council will consider in forming its advice. Decisions over proposals for works to a church building are taken according to the framework of the Duffield Questions as modified by the Court of Arches over Penshurst (See http://www.churchcare.co.uk/churches/guidance-advice/making-changes-to-your- building/duffield-question). The purpose of the questions is to assess if a proposal will cause harm to a building and, if the answer is yes, if the harm is justified by the need for the proposed works. In the context of a church building due regard must be had to the church as a centre of worship and mission. Benefits to the worship and mission of the church can be used to show need for works that cause some degree of harm to the building. Although few cases considered by the Council will proceed to a hearing in open court, where the use of this framework is maybe most obvious, it informs how the Council approaches matters that are referred to it. There is a deeply exciting opportunity to grow the spiritual life of the people in this group of parishes, release more of the gifts of the people of God, reach out to those distanced in any way from the Church and lead the different church communities into a more integrated, common mission and ministry. The appointment of a new Associate (House for Duty) Minister, along with the involvement of able retired clergy living in the Benefices, provides a wonderful opportunity to build an effective clergy and lay team across the whole group. The parishes are some of the most southernmost in the Diocese, geographically and emotionally quite distant from Coventry and the Cathedral, and who may have felt over the years a lack of connection with the ‘centre’. I am therefore very encouraged about some of the steps being taken mutually to help re-build a closer connection and positive relationship. I endorse and fully support these endeavours. When I came to the Diocese in 2008, I was charged by the then Archbishop of Canterbury to ‘release the missionary energies of the Diocese of Coventry’. That is what we have been doing over the last years, helped by our clear Mission Purpose and supported by our strategic emphasis on growing healthy church communities.
