A pillar of the British Men’s programme, Paul has been one of the key drivers behind the recent British rise to the top of the Men’s Artistic ranks at world level. He and his team at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club have created huge success from a club that continues to grow and lead in the Gymnastics world. Paul started out as a County Level Gymnast from Essex with an insatiable desire to go to the Olympic Games and achieved his target, albeit as a coach rather than a gymnast. He left school to pursue a career as a London Dispatch Rider while spending all his free time down at the gym learning to flip. With over 30 years of coaching experience he has accumulated a lifetime of involvement in the sport at all levels. From gymnastics for people with disabilities right thought to Olympic medalists, Paul has worked at all levels and produced historic results both nationally and internationally, to list all his coaching achievements would take quite a while however here are some of the highlights… • Coach to Louis Smith, triple Olympic and World Medallist. • Coach to Daniel Keatings, World all-around Silver Medallist, and European Champion 2010 & 2013. • Coach to Luke Folwell, 5 times Commonwealth Medallist and All-around Champion 2010. • Coach to Marissa King, Beijing Olympian 2008. • Coach to Irish European & World Championship competitor Luke Carson. • GB Men's Coach at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. • GB Men's Coach at 5 World Championships. • GB Men's coach at 10 European Championships • England Coach at 2 Commonwealth Games. • GB Coach at over 50 International Competitions. • Coach to 3 Olympic, 4 World and over 20 European medallists, as well as over 30 British Apparatus and All around Junior and Senior medal winners. Paul is now an accomplished Keynote Speaker with a wealth of humorous anecdotes that pepper his fascinating recollections of his journey from boy dreamer to Olympic Coach, his 15 years of work with 'Strictly Come Dancing' winner, Louis Smith, and his advice on how success in sport and working with children can provide meaningful lessons and inspiration to all areas of work. Paul explores the link with success in high level sport and business, and will show how careful planning and goal setting can help any team to focus and progress. 5 Guest Speakers Dr Marie-Elaine Grant Dip Physio, PhD, MCSP, MISCP. Dr Marie-Elaine Grant, Ireland’s Olympic Team Chief Physiotherapist from 1992 – 2010 is a graduate of UCD and has become the first Irish person to receive an appointment on the Games Group of the International Olympic Committee’s Medical Commission. Since graduating in Physiotherapy from UCD, she has gained extensive experience working in renowned medical centres both at home and abroad specialising in sports medicine and musculo-skeletal conditions. Her first break came when she was appointed to a physiotherapy position on an international team at the University Hospital in Geneva; here she worked with colleagues from countries across the globe offering her the opportunity to learn a wide spectrum of cutting edge treatment techniques. She now has her own physiotherapy practice in Dublin where she continues to specialise in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries. In 1990 she was appointed to the Irish Olympic Medical Committee and subsequently appointed as Chief Physiotherapist to the Irish Olympic Team for 5 consecutive Olympic Games commencing with Barcelona 1992 through to Beijing 2008. She also served with the Irish Winter Olympic Teams, Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010 and 10 European Youth Olympic Teams. Dr Grant’s workshop will cover what every Coach/Gymnast should know to avoid injury, and will also address the common injury pitfalls that can occur in gymnastics, what to do if injury does occur to ensure the fastest recovery possible, and to avoid recurrence of the same injuries so that the gymnast may achieve their optimal performance. www.grantphysiotherapy.ie Dennis O’Connor Dennis O’Connor is co-founder and director of 2into3. SUCCESS STORY Fitbit & Sky ‘Dance Fit’: Helping Fitbit Create Its Own Groove After the success of their ‘Fit in 5’ campaign, Fitbit wanted to create a new and fresh message aligned with their mission statement “to empower and inspire you to live a healthier, more active life”. Partnering with Sky, they brought this message alive with a branded content series called ‘Dance Fit’ starring Kelly Brook and Brendan Cole. Comprised of two series (each of which had six short-form branded content episodes), ‘Dance Fit’ would teach and guide viewers through a ballroom and Latin dance-themed workout with Fitbit’s product at the forefront of the experience. Showcased through TV adverts, sponsorship, product placement and endorsement, Fitbit launched the campaign to coincide with the annual return of Strictly Come Dancing on the BBC and the mania for ballroom dancing; elevating Sky customers’ engagement in the hype, and adding a bit of fun and movement to their TV viewing. Challenge While health can be serious business, Fitbit felt it didn’t have to be, as they believe “you’re more likely to reach your goals if you’re encouraged to have fun, smile, and feel empowered along the way”. So, as a passionate team dedicated to health, fitness and building products that help transform people’s lives, Fitbit wanted to design a fun experience that would bring their product into the homes and lives of viewers seamlessly, and in a way that would help them to achieve their health and fitness goals - whatever they may be. 800k 148k 44k Downloads on the Instagram Twitter views set-top box views Insight The previous partnership between Fitbit and Sky, ‘Fit In 5’, introduced celebrities to home-based gym workouts in a 5-minute ‘bite-sized’ format.

  • An Investigation Into Audiences' Televisual Experience of Strictly
An investigation into audiences’ televisual experience of Strictly Come Dancing Karen Wood University of Manchester, UK Volume 7, Issue 2 (November 2010) Abstract This paper explores ten participants’ viewing experience of Strictly Come Dancing (BBC, 2009b) through personal, reflective diary writing. The main aim of the research was to investigate the concept of kinesthetic empathy and to see how this central concern in dance spectatorship might be theorised in relation to the active/passive debate in media audience research. Viewers’ motivation and commitment in how they watch Strictly will be explored to try and understand the range of viewing strategies adopted. From the research, areas that have been highlighted for particular attention are spectacle, emotional connection, admiration of skill and aspiration to dance. The conclusion will draw together discussion of moments of passivity, kinesthetic experience and active or passive engagement in relation to the concept of intuitive spectatorship. Keywords: Kinesthetic, empathy, active, passive, spectatorship, commitment, engagement The research presented in this paper is part of a wider project investigating kinesthetic empathy and screen dance audiences. The concept of kinesthetic empathy provides a framework to explore spectator responses to dance on screen, whether in terms of experimental dance film or popular dance on television. The aim of the research for this paper was to investigate the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of ten participants’ interaction with Strictly Come Dancing (including my own interaction as a self-confessed fan) and what motivates the viewing. The objective of this paper is to interweave debates in media audience research on Page 262 Volume 7, Issue 2 November 2010 active or passive spectatorship with those from dance scholarly discourse on kinesthesia with the ambition of reaching a refined understanding of spectatorship of dance on screen.

Warner Leisure Hotels crown first official Strictly Come Dancing break winners Submitted by: pr-sending-enterprises Monday, 15 March 2010 Warner Leisure Hotels has announced that a couple from Abingdon has been crowned the winners of its first official Strictly Come Dancing holiday breaks. Amanda McCabe and Julian Siret were presented with an engraved glass glitter ball trophy by stars of the BBC TV show Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova after winning the final of the event held at the Warner Leisure Hotels' Cricket St Thomas hotel in Somerset. The couple, who began dancing only three years ago, won over the audience of more than 400 guests by performing an "absolutely superb" waltz to the song "To You I'm Born Again". Referring to the difference in height between 6ft 3ins Julian and Amanda, 5ft 2ins, Darren praised the couple for "going out there and moving beautifully". He added: "It is really refreshing to see some real quality dancing, and great movement." Fellow judge Ryan McShane, who provided dance instruction during the three-night UK Breaks (http://www.warnerleisurehotels.co.uk/short-breaks/uk-break.aspx) at the Cricket St Thomas hotel near Chard, said: "That was absolutely superb. This couple have a height difference but I just think you moved so well together." Lilia, also a judge, commended the couple for their "great achievement" and "very neat" footwork. The victory, in which they beat eight other couples in a vote by the audience, was all the more remarkable after their first entry in a competition two years ago ended in calamity.
