Introduction

On behalf of the Board & Staff at Gymnastics Ireland we are happy to welcome you all today to the first Annual Gymnastics Ireland Conference and our new administrational home at the Sports HQ building at Sports Campus Ireland in Dublin.

The theme of the conference is ‘Supporting our Clubs'.

We have pulled together an esteemed list of guest speakers on a range of topics that we feel will be of huge interest and relevance for you as our members which hopefully will provide you with some ideas to assist in the running and development of your clubs. It has also been designed to give clubs the opportunity to meet, socialise, build relationships and exchange ideas.

Gymnastics Ireland is happy to have been able to allocate two free tickets for the conference to each member club and would like to thank you for your participation in what we hope will become a flagship event in addition to your on-going support.

Yours sincerely,

Key Note Speaker

Paul Hall MBE

Paul Hall is arguably one of the top Gymnastics Coaches in the world.

A pillar of the British Men’s programme, Paul has been one of the key drivers behind the recent British rise to the top of the Men’s Artistic ranks at world level. He and his team at Huntingdon Gymnastics Club have created huge success from a club that continues to grow and lead in the Gymnastics world.

Paul started out as a County Level Gymnast from Essex with an insatiable desire to go to the Olympic Games and achieved his target, albeit as a coach rather than a gymnast. He left school to pursue a career as a London Dispatch Rider while spending all his free time down at the gym learning to flip. With over 30 years of coaching experience he has accumulated a lifetime of involvement in the sport at all levels. From gymnastics for people with disabilities right thought to Olympic medalists, Paul has worked at all levels and produced historic results both nationally and internationally, to list all his coaching achievements would take quite a while however here are some of the highlights…

• Coach to , triple Olympic and World Medallist. • Coach to Daniel Keatings, World all-around Silver Medallist, and European Champion 2010 & 2013. • Coach to Luke Folwell, 5 times Commonwealth Medallist and All-around Champion 2010. • Coach to Marissa King, Beijing Olympian 2008. • Coach to Irish European & World Championship competitor Luke Carson. • GB Men's Coach at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. • GB Men's Coach at 5 World Championships. • GB Men's coach at 10 European Championships • England Coach at 2 Commonwealth Games. • GB Coach at over 50 International Competitions. • Coach to 3 Olympic, 4 World and over 20 European medallists, as well as over 30 British Apparatus and All around Junior and Senior medal winners.

Paul is now an accomplished Keynote Speaker with a wealth of humorous anecdotes that pepper his fascinating recollections of his journey from boy dreamer to Olympic Coach, his 15 years of work with 'Strictly Come Dancing' winner, Louis Smith, and his advice on how success in sport and working with children can provide meaningful lessons and inspiration to all areas of work. Paul explores the link with success in high level sport and business, and will show how careful planning and goal setting can help any team to focus and progress.

Gymnastics Ireland Speakers

Kieran Behan Kieran Behan is without doubt the most recognisable Irish Gymnast in the Irish sports scene.

He began gymnastics when he was just 8 years old. At the age of 10, he suffered a serious set-back during an operation to remove a non-cancerous tumor from his leg. He spent 15 months in a wheelchair as a result. He returned to gymnastics only for a freak high bar accident to occur. Kieran suffered brain damage as a result of the falling, damaging his inner ear. It meant he had to relearn how to do simple things such as sitting and how to move his head and left him unable to train for three years. Finally after being told that he might never walk again, Kieran returned to the gym after a great deal of rehabilitation.

In 2011 Kieran was crowned the FIG World Series Challenge Cup Champion on Floor. After competing in the All Around competition at the World Championships in Tokyo, he earned a place at the London 2012 Test Event, where he could qualify for a place at the Summer Olympics. On Wednesday 11th January 2012 it was confirmed that Behan would represent Ireland in London. He then went onto to place 4th at the Floor Event Final of the London 2012 Test Event.

Behan is the first Irish gymnast to qualify for the Olympics in almost 16 years.

Dermot Howlin Dermot joined Gymnastics Ireland in Nov 2008 as Policy & Welfare Manager having worked for a considerable period in the financial services with Standard Life and briefly with Basketball Ireland.

In a voluntary capacity Dermot has worked at different administrative levels in sport. Over the last fifteen years Dermot has been to the forefront of developing the GAA’s Child Welfare & Protection Policies at National level.
