For many years, water traffic was the main mode of transportation in this region. Steamboats carried livestock, equipment, supplies and passengers. The need for Moosehead steamboats waned with the coming of roads.

The last survivor of the fleet, the Katahdin became a towboat hauling pulpwood rafts. In 1975, she hauled her last log boom across Moosehead Lake to the East Outlet. Scott Paper Company presented the Katahdin to the Moosehead Marine Museum in 1977. In 1985, after many years of devoted work by many, the Katahdin, Queen of the fleet, once again sailed over the deep waters of Moosehead Lake.

Every year, autumn displays brilliant hues of red, yellow and orange. The typical “leafpeeping” season is from mid-September thru mid-October. The change in the landscape from the greens of summer is breathtaking.

There are several scenic loops for those traveling by automobile. It also happens to be a very popular time of year for hikers to get the up close and personal look at autumn’s beauty. Whatever your mode of transportation may be, make the Moosehead Lake region the leafpeeping destination for you!

Visit our website for a printable list of scenic drives in our area.
