Welcome to the 2019 ACL Conference. The faculty and staff of the Lewis A. Jackson Library of Indiana Wesleyan Welcome! University have looked forward to your arrival for almost two years. Now that you are here we trust you will be stimulated intellectually, encouraged professionally, enlightened spiritually, and refreshed personally.

As you explore what being Rooted in Faith and Grounded in Truth means for you, we trust you will be able to take advantage of devotions, the keynote, workshops, and other opportunities as your schedule permits. Please also remember to take care of you by making the time to rest and relax.

As you make your way across the campus to take advantage of various conference activities, we trust you will also take note of the statues placed around the campus and consider their meaning as you read the plaques describing them. In addition, we hope you will learn more about Dr. Lewis A. Jackson, the individual for whom the Jackson Library was named, and his role as an educator, entrepreneur, inventor, and Tuskegee Airman.

Feel free to contact any of the Jackson Library faculty and staff or members of the Conference Planning Team for assistance with any questions you might have. We look forward to serving you as you participate this week.

Enjoy!!

On behalf of your ACL Board of Directors, I’m excited to welcome you to the 2019 Annual Welcome! Conference of the Association of Christian Librarians! What a blessing it is to anticipate these next few days of personal growth and professional development as we gather here at Indiana Wesleyan University. I am confident that each of us will depart the campus at the end of the week having considered our calling more deeply, examined our work more effectively, and engaged with colleagues more intentionally. Even more importantly, we will have reminded ourselves once again that we are first and foremost the people of God, rooted in faith and grounded in truth, as our conference theme proclaims.

Thanks to the careful work of the Conference Coordinating Team and our hospitable IWU hosts, we can count on a wonderful combination of enrichment, encouragement, and fun this week. Enjoy all of it! From the pre-conference sessions to the keynote presentation to the many concurrent workshops and poster presentations, you will return to your library equipped to serve your community well. I believe you’ll also return to your place of service with bolstered faith and a renewed sense of calling. I can’t imagine a better combination.

May the Lord bless you this week!

It is with great anticipation and excitement that we from ACL Home Office and Conference Coordinating Team welcome you! After many days, months, and even years of planning we are so delighted this time of fellowship and learning is upon us.

I am thankful for the amazing team that I have the privilege to work with. Each with the same desire—for you to have the best possible experience, to be sharpened professionally by the wonderful lineup of speakers and workshops, encouraged in your spiritual walk by your fellow Christian librarians, and equipped to go back to your current role with fresh ideas and knowledge to apply in your unique situation.

You’ll notice that the Conference Program Guide this year is quite different. I hope you enjoy the new full-color format. This change allows us to steward our resources a bit differently and provide every attendee with a spiral bound notebook for taking notes this week or to use as you see fit.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me this week if I can help in any way. It is a joy to serve you and I pray this week you will be challenged to be rooted in faith and grounded in truth.

“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing

with gratitude.” Colossians 2:6-7 NASB

8:45–10:15Am Keynote: For Or Unto Me?: Explorations of the Formative Student Center Potential of Libraries Globe Theater Dr. Todd Ream The mere fact that visitors to libraries are often referred to as patrons points to a challenge. In particular, before one visits a library he or she is thinking about what resources may be acquired. The success of a patron’s visit is thus determined by whether an acquisition effort was profitable. As a result, libraries are measured by the size of their holdings and thus the chance of a patron’s success. However, what if one were to visit a library to not only

acquire resources but also to undergo a formative experience? Instead of just TUESDAY thinking libraries exist for me, what if I also thought about what libraries do unto me? In essence, what is the formative potential of such an experience?

In I Corinthians 13:12, the Apostle Paul writes, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.” References to this passage often focus on the fact that we see. However, the Apostle Paul was clear to point out that because of our finite nature, we see but do so dimly. What if libraries were places that point us to the reality that we see? However, what if libraries were also places that remind us we will never see all that exists this side of eternity? Dr. Ream will explore the formative potential of libraries in relation to the cultivation of intellectual humility—this side of eternity we need to be reminded that we see, but that we also see dimly. This presentation will also focus on how a chapter on academic libraries would fit into the arc of the argument made in, Restoring the Soul of the University: Unifying Christian Higher Education in a Fragmented Age.

At the conclusion of the presentation, several ACL members will be responding and there will be a time of question and answer. Dr. Ream will also be presenting during Workshop #1 for those interested in continuing the dialogue on this topic.

Todd C. Ream, PhD is professor of higher education at Taylor University and a distinguished fellow with the Lumen Research Institute. He has served on college and university campuses in residence life, student support services, honors programs, and as a chief student development officer. He earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Higher Education from The Pennsylvania State University in 2001. He also holds a MDiv from Duke University Divinity School and a BA from .

Todd has authored and co-authored a number of books including Restoring the Soul of the University: Unifying Christian Higher Education in a Fragmented Age. Todd also has contributed articles, editorials, interviews, and reviews to a wide variety of journals, magazines, and newspapers. A full list of Dr. Ream’s books and contributions can be found on acl.org/conference.

10:15–10:45am Refreshment Break Student Center Teter Cafe TUESDAY 10:45–11:45am Workshop #1 Handouts and slides from many presentations will be available at acl.org after the conference.

Student Center Work/Life Balance & Misc: Lessons in Life & Librarianship from the Bedford Legacy of Fred Rogers Alison Jones, Electronic Resources and Instruction Librarian, Carson-Newman University With the recent 50th anniversary of the children’s television show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, attention has been on Fred Rogers and his legacy. A Presbyterian minister ordained for children’s television work, whom rarely addressed religious issues on the air, Fred Rogers exemplified the idea of preaching the Gospel without words. For Christian librarians who struggle with how to incorporate our faith in our librarianship, in Christian or secular institutions, Fred Rogers and his television ministry makes an ideal example. Modeling our daily interactions with students on the ideals of Fred Rogers can enable us to be a source of light and hope to our patrons.

Student Center Administrative/Leadership: Making Do with Less: Maximizing Henry West Personnel, Budget, and Potential Jon Jones, Director of Library Services, Baptist Bible College & Theological Seminary If you have worked in a library for any measure of time, your budget has been cut. Continually, library administration is asked to do more with less, or at the least, to do the same with less. While smaller libraries have historically been the main target of budget cuts, larger libraries are now experiencing unprecedented budget cuts as well. This presentation will look at practical ways our library and other libraries have dealt with budget and staffing cuts. The presentation will also look at budget management from a business standpoint, as well as trends and information in the

acl.org @ACLibrarians #aclib19 13 return to table of contents

greater library community. Budget cuts, whether for personnel, services, or resources, seem to be inevitable. How can libraries respond proactively instead of reactively? How can student workers be used for additional library tasks? How can we effectively defend our current budgets to our administration? How can libraries save money via local, regional, and other consortiums and associations such as ACL?

Student Center Information Literacy: Fixing “the Snap”—Transitioning from Century the Standards to the Frames in an Established Information

Literacy Program TUESDAY Jon Hale, Head of Reference & Information Literacy, Lincoln Memorial University You thought the Avengers had it rough facing Thanos, Instructional Librarians are having to deal with the Framework. Many of us have worked hard at building an Information Literacy program at our institutions built on the foundation of the ACRL standards. Then along comes the Framework and “SNAP” it turns to dust. This workshop focuses on how we transitioned a well-established Information Literacy program (the focus of the latest QEP of the University) to the new Framework. Attention will be given to addressing all the Frameworks throughout the curriculum as well as assessment. It is still a work in progress, we haven’t quite reached our “Endgame.”

Student Center Librarianship: Keynote Discussion—Explorations of the Formative Globe Potential of Libraries Todd Ream, Professor of Higher Education, Taylor University Take the keynote address application a little further during this workshop. Come explore with Todd Ream the formative potential of libraries.

Student Center Reference/Outreach: Why FACTS Still Matter: Fake News & Leedy academic Research Amy Lorson, OCLS Librarian, Indiana Wesleyan University Rachel Walters, OCLS Librarian, Indiana Wesleyan University From parody to fabricated content, our students are bombarded with information that can be difficult to interpret. The internet and social media makes it possible to disseminate fake news quickly and easily. But are our students taking the time to critically think through what they are reading? Helping students understand the need to use legitimate and verifiable information in an age of quick information access continues to be a vital skill that must be taught. We will also discuss the need for proper citation style. We will share real examples of trying to verify sources that may, or may not, exist.

Jackson Library 17 Tech Services & Technology: Technical Services Workflows with Less Staff Jamie Tiemeyer, Head of Technical Services, Cornerstone University Do you have Technical Services staff leaving? Are you being told you can only fill the full-time position if you cut a part-time position? These are possible realities here at Cornerstone at the end of summer. How do you make sure all the parts of workflows are covered? What can be combined?

I’m researching how to come up with the best workflows. The main TUESDAY question is: How to do more with less? I’ll share what I have learned and my plans so far. I would love to see what other libraries’ workflows look like in their Technical Services areas.

12–1Pm Lunch Student Center New to conference, or haven’t attended in a while? Still looking for ways to Baldwin Dining Room connect within ACL? If so, join us at the table marked with the “Connect with ACL” sign.

2:30–3:30Pm Workshop #2 Handouts and slides from many presentations will be available at acl.org after the conference.

Student Center Work/Life Balance & Misc: A Grounded View of Work/Life Balance in Bedford the “Vocation” of Christian Librarianship Jennifer Ewing, Library Director, Southern California Seminary Gail Heideman, Dean of Library Services, Greenville University Are you a new librarian just starting out in the profession? A mid-career

librarian who feels the most challenging days have past? Or a solo librarian TUESDAY or library director overwhelmed by the task set before you? As Christian librarians we often view our professional life in terms of vocation. While couching our work in religious terms seems a natural fit, this can create a work/life imbalance leading to burnout. This presentation will explore the concept of vocation, overwork and burnout, mid-career boredom, and the Pauline ideas of singleness and vocation to find a work/life balance that embraces the biblical concept of rest.

Jackson Library 17 Administrative/Leadership: It Can’t Be Done Without Planning Nancy Olson, Director of Library Services, Lincoln Christian University Carol Reid, Editor, Randall House Publications From first thought to final result, the various components and processes in successful planning will be examined, including David Allen’s natural planning phases in his book, Getting Things Done. This workshop will look at the use of planning for solving problems, meeting current and future needs, improving productivity, developing a project, and stewarding resources within the library context. Explore using big picture thinking, blank sheet visioning, backward planning, creativity, collaboration, communication, post mortems, “what’s next?” questions, and the impact of delays in the planning process. Do you want to transition vision into reality? Then, this workshop can be beneficial.

Student Center Information Literacy: Critically Engaging Current Issues Leedy Amy Bessin, Instructional Services Librarian, Asbury University Issues that dominate the news and our cultural conversation can be highly emotional and divisive. It can be tempting to avoid engaging with these issues in an information literacy setting, but it is imperative to prepare our students to engage with information on these issues in a critical manner and that we encourage thoughtful conversation on these topics on our campuses. This workshop will feature an example of a one-shot session

acl.org @ACLibrarians #aclib19 16 return to table of contents

on evaluating information sources for current issues and an example of a community book discussion. There will be time at the end for group discussion.

Student Center Librarianship: Accountability for Student Employees: Balancing Real Henry West World with Grace Noelle Keller, Technical Services Librarian, Adrian College Juliana Morley, Head of Public Services, Biola University Lana Wilson, Research Librarian/Assistant Director,

Taylor University TUESDAY Academic libraries employ students in a variety of positions, relying on them a great deal in the provision of key services. This panel highlights the accountability methods in place at three institutions, providing insight and examples of how to strengthen and enhance the systems you may already have in place in order to ensure students are meeting library expectations, fulfilling job descriptions, and taking advantage of opportunities to learn from their mistakes and develop essential workplace skills.

Student Center Reference/Outreach: Serving Limited English Proficient (LEP) Users Century in Academic Libraries: Research & Practice Peggy Nzomo, Digital Sciences, ESL, and Global Education Librarian, Kent State University Qinqin Zhang, Assistant Librarian: Information Literacy, E-Learning, & E-Resources, Trinity Western University Drawing from previous research that was carried out at a large Canadian University and on the current practices of the presenters, this session discusses useful strategies for providing library services to Limited English Proficient users in the North American academic context. While providing a working definition of Multilingual Information Literacy (MLIL), the presenters will show that it is indeed possible to celebrate and embrace language and cultural diversity while also alleviating language barriers primarily in the online information environment.

Student Center Tech Services & Technology: The Social Library: Creating an Globe Intentional & Purposeful Social Media Plan for Any Library Jeff Lash, Web & Theological Services Specialist, Cornerstone University Social media has become a mainstay of modern society. Libraries need to have an intentional plan for a consistent presence on social media if they want to connect with patrons in the digital spaces that they inhabit. This workshop will show you what a social media plan looks like and give you

some tips and tools to help you begin building a plan for your own library. We’ll also discuss best practices and some pitfalls to avoid so that you walk away well equipped to create a purposeful and effective social media presence regardless of your context.

3:45–4:45Pm Section Meetings Jackson Library & All attendees are invited to attend and participate in the section meeting of Student Center their choice.
