Exploring Ethiopia 8 - 21 February 2020 EXPLORING ETHIOPIA 8 - 21 FEBRUARY 2020 Tour Leader: Andy Bunten UNVEIL AN ANCIENT LAND OF MYSTERY AND LEGEND Ethiopia is a fascinating and complex country, unlike any other place in the world. This journey through northern Ethiopia unveils an ancient land steeped in mystery and legend. It is a land full of extraordinary religious relics and highland scenery of unsurpassed grandeur. From Addis Ababa, the capital, we fly to Axum, seat of one of the foremost empires of the ancient world. Here we glimpse the ‘dawn’ of Ethiopian civilisation (400BC) and visit the ruins of Yeha. High in the Lasta Mountains, we visit Lalibela, the ‘New Jerusalem’, with its extraordinary ‘sunken’ churches carved from solid rock. In Gondar, we explore the country’s imperial heritage and architecture before driving north into the majestic Simien Mountains. Experience this soaring mountain range with its rocky crags and pinnacles, plunging chasms, lush river valleys and endemic wildlife. Our remarkable journey ends at Lake Tana, source of the Blue Nile and the setting for numerous monastic island settlements.     The Hydro-Politics of Fascism: The Lake Tana Dam Project and Mussolini’s 1935 Invasion of Ethiopia Angelo Caglioti Mussolini’s invasion of Ethiopia, also called the Italo-Ethiopian crisis (1935-1936), was a global historical event because it represented a major step in fascist aggression against the Versailles Order. My research project examines the Italo-Ethiopian war as an infrastructural conflict over the water resources of the Horn of Africa and investigates the hydro-politics of Mussolini’s attack on Ethiopia. In particular, I focus on the plan for the construction of a dam at Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile. The aim of this project is to write the first international environmental history of the Italo- Ethiopian war that places colonial natural environments at the center of the global conflict between the liberal international order and fascist imperialism. Analyzing past hydro-politics of the Horn of Africa is crucial to putting current geopolitics of sovereignty and water security in the Horn of Africa in historical perspective, including the current “Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam,” a massive project begun in 2011 to harness the Blue Nile with the largest African dam ever, and the seventh largest in the world. The continuity of Italian colonialism between the nineteenth and the twentieth century offers a unique laboratory to analyze the metamorphosis of liberal into fascist imperialism in terms of colonial practices, scientific planning, and environmental management. By examining the role of African ecologies, scientific expertise employed in the Lake Tana dam project, and colonial hydro-politics, I will explore how a fascist political economy violently targeting natural resources emerged in the years leading up to World War II.

    Joint World Heritage Centre – IUCN Monitoring Mission to Simien Mountains National Park World Heritage Property MISSION REPORT Reactive Monitoring Mission to Simien Mountains National Park Ethiopia 10 – 17 May 2006 Guy Debonnet (UNESCO) Lota Melamari (IUCN) Bastian Bomhard (IUCN) July 2006 1 Executive Summary The World Heritage Committee requested at its 29th session (Durban, 2004) a joint UNESCO/IUCN monitoring mission to Simien Mountains National Park to assess the state of conservation of the property and progress towards achieving the 4 benchmarks set by the World Heritage Committee at its 25th session to guide the removal of the property from the List of World Heritage in Danger. The mission took place 10 – 17 May 2006. This joint mission report summarizes the mission’s key findings on current conservation and management issues at the property. It includes detailed recommendations regarding the benchmarks set by the Committee, including a proposal for 4 revised benchmarks, and other recommendations to improve the conservation and management of the property. The mission found that substantial progress has been made towards the benchmarks 1, 2 and 4 set by the Committee at its 25th session. At the same time, the mission concluded that it is imperative to finalize the park boundary changes and to legalize them through a re- gazetment of Simien Mountains National Park. The mission also noted that benchmark 3 was not achieved and will not be achieved in the near future. The mission concluded that in spite of the progress made since 2001, the threats to the values for which the property was inscribed on the World Heritage List have not yet been resolved.

Trip Summary This trip to Ethiopia takes in the iconic highlights of Ethiopia. We start in historic Lalibela. The town is famous around the world for the rock-hewn churches carved into the living rock in the 12th and 13th century, during the reign of Gebre Mesqel Lalibela. These churches still hold regular services and we will get the opportunity to photograph both the exterior and interiors. The highlight of this part of the trip will be the Sunday Service, attended by hundreds of locals. From Lalibela we travel to the Simien Mountains, the "Roof of Africa". Here we will stay in the highest altitude hotel on the continent and photograph the unique grazing Gelada Baboons amidst the fragrant Thyme meadows at the tops of the cliffs.
