MAYHEW: I was born in the Presidio, which is a military base in San Francisco. I lived there for the first few years of my life. Then, at a rather young age, went to the Philippines for 3 or 4 years. I think we came back about 1940. Then I grew up in Spokane, Washington and various other locations with military bases, ending in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, from which I went to college at Princeton.     EXIT STAGE LEFT: SENATOR JAMES M. JEFFORDS AND THE RHETORIC OF CONGRESSIONAL PARTY SWITCHERS by JUSTIN LEE KILLIAN (Under the Direction of John M. Murphy, PhD) ABSTRACT This project looks at the discourse surrounding Senator James M. Jeffords’ decision to leave the Republican Party. Although Jeffords was not an extremely powerful member of the US Senate, his interference with President George W. Bush’s legislative agenda was a landmark move in American politics. The thesis proceeds in three parts. Chapter One introduces the subject matter, provides a literature review from both political science and communication studies, and offers the critical perspective for the entire project. Chapter Two focuses on elements of American paideia and offers a critical analysis of Jeffords’ “Declaration of Independence,” and “First Anniversary,” speeches. Chapter Three shows how Jeffords engages in agonistic rhetorical practices through a critical look at his “Second Anniversary Speech.” Finally, Chapter Four provides some concluding thoughts on Jeffords, party switching rhetoric, and offers potential avenues of research for rhetorical scholars. The purpose of this study is to seek out, examine, and analyze the relationship that Emily Dickinson shared with her sister, Lavinia, and with her sister-in-law, Susan Gilbert Dickinson. All of her letters and poems have been carefully considered, as well as the letters and diaries of friends and relatives who might shed light on the three women. The primary sources used in this study are Emily Dickin- son's poems and letters, and the personal accounts of people who knew the Dickinson family: Millicent Todd Bingham, Mabel Loomis Todd, and Martha Dickinson Bianchi. Also of great help were recent works of David Higgins, John Cody, and John Evangelist Walsh. The thesis is divided into six chapters, each centering upon Susan or Lavinia and their relationship with Emily. Chapter One traces Emily's attachment to her sister from childhood to death. It includes poems and notes written to or about Vinnie, referring to her cats, her frequent visits away from home, and her role as protector. Chapter Two 1 begins with Emily's early acceptance of Susan Gilbert, who eventually married Austin Dickinson. Emily's desire to remain on good terms with Sue can be seen in the poems sent to Sue that reveal dependency.
