50 | NYO-USA/NYO2 | 2017 NYO-USA Tour | 51 Cultural Exchange

NYO-USA musicians served as dynamic music ambassadors on tour through cultural exchange activities coordinated by the US State Department in Mexico, Ecuador, and Colombia. In cooperation with the US Consulate in Guadalajara, Mexico, 30 NYO-USA musicians visited ACCESS, the US Consulate’s English-language program. Students of the program performed a choral piece for the NYO-USA participants, and a small ensemble of NYO-USA musicians performed a mariachi standard for their hosts.

While in Quito, Ecuador, the NYO-USA musicians participated in a pop-up concert at the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo on the equator. Coordinated with the Ecuadorian Consulate in New York, a small group of NYO-USA musicians traveled to Guayaquil, Ecuador, to join the local youth orchestra in a performance at the headquarters of the Ecuadorian Solidarity Foundation. NYO-USA chamber ensembles performed at Iglesia La Floresta, a church in the La Floresta neighborhood of Quito. The concert, which was organized with the US Embassy, was part of weekend-long festivities celebrating the neighborhood’s 100th anniversary.

Upon arriving in Bogotá, several NYO-USA musicians were filmed for a segment of the US Embassy’sEnglish Tips web series, which features lessons on English idioms for 4 non-native speakers. Before departing Colombia, NYO-USA musicians had brunch with US Embassy staff and heard a presentation on the work of the US diplomatic corps.

1. Conductor Marin Alsop joins the musicians on a trip to Monserrate, a mountain overlooking Bogotá. Throughout its 1 time in the city, NYO-USA participated in multiple sightseeing excursions coordinated by the Colombian Cultural Ministry and Batuta. 2. Members of NYO-USA pose before a chamber concert at Iglesia La Floresta. 3. NYO-USA musicians pose outside the University of Guadalajara’s ACCESS English-language program in Guadalajara. 4. Steven Baloue chats with local students as part of NYO-USA’s visit to the ACCESS program. 5. Erica Hwang and Karlie Roberts pose with a fellow musician at a pop-up concert in Guayaquil.

80 | NYO-USA/NYO2 | 2017 NYO2 musicians enjoy a boat cruise around New York harbor.

They say music brings people together ... Now I know for a fact that this is an understatement; there’s an intangible connection that exists between us musicians even before we’ve met. From the first notes played in rehearsal to our final concert, I’ve realized that not only has music brought“ us together, it will continue to keep us connected for the rest of our lives regardless of how different we are as people or the distance that separates us. Thank you to everyone from NYO-USA for one of the best experiences of my life, I’ll miss you all!” —Arin Sarkissian, NYO-USA flutist
