Consulaires. Pompee a Nerva. Anonymous, undated manuscript written in French and listing Roman Republican Coins through to the Twelve Caesars. Quarto (205 x 305 mm), pp. notice page giving weights and references, pages 1-134 listing alphabetically the family names of the Republican moneyers, followed by 4 pages of anonymous issues and two appendices. Pages 135 -400 list chronologically the emperors of the Imperatorial period and the Twelve Caesars, index at end. Such a corpus was intended to supersede all publications on the subject by describing every known coin type of each city or within a chronological sequence, with full attention given to all available source material. This dream of a corpus of all ancient Greek coins seems to have haunted numismatists since the early 16th century when Wolfgang Lazius first proposed such a work. Finely engraved armorial ex libris of Robert Stirling Newall. Binding signed in gilt type on front turn in: G. BELLEW, BOOKBINDER, DUBLIN. A UNIQUE and most attractive volume. The fine manuscript illustrations depict some 150 coins, from mediaeval times to the early years of the nineteenth century. Robert Stirling Newall (1812 -1889) was a notable Scottish engineer and astronomer. His company manufactured at least a part of the original Atlantic cable. He appears to have had considerable interests including travelling and was apparently also artistically inclined. The present volume would seem to indicate the fusing of these two passions. The DNB notes "A series of drawings of the sun, made by him from 1848 to 1852 are extant". Examples of George Bellew's delightful bindings, apparently executed from early to mid-nineteenth century, are recorded in the British Library and elsewhere. £150-200 123 World Unknown. Coinage and History in the North Sea World c. 500-1250. Essays in honour of Marion Archibald. Leiden, 2006. Large quarto, pp. x(ii), 791 (3), illustrations and tables throughout the text. Casebound. All 28 papers included in this festschrift consider the role of coinage in northern Europe from the fall of the Western to the early thirteenth century. Although the focus of the volumes is the coinage itself, the majority of the papers consider coinage in its historical and/or archaeological context. A recurrent theme of the volume is the movement of coinage across the English Channel and the North Sea and beyond. Particular areas of focus include the importatation and use of money in early Anglo-Saxon England; movement, hoarding and secondary treatment of coinage during the Viking Age; and monetary contacts between England and her neighbours under the Normans and Angevins. The papers in this book provide an important range of perspectives in current numismatic research, and will provide a valuable resource for scholars in a variety of disciplines with interests in the economy and society in northern Europe, c.500-1250 £20-30 129 British Dalton, R. & Hamer, S.
