The city of Kinshasa, in Democratic Republic of the Congo has a long lasting and major concern of SWM. More worryingly, with rapid population growth and urbanization, waste generation, both domestic and industrial, is expected to rise with great potential of health and environmental problems. Therefore, with an objective of bringing a possible solution that reduces the increasing problem of SWM, we explore in the present study the use of crowdsourcing as a possible mechanism to identify, localize, characterize solid waste landfills. -

From West, East, Central and Southern Africa, informal economy is contributing enormously to the GDP and economic growth and development. Paradoxically, while it is doing so, little is being done to examine its potential and to provide it with appropriate management strategies as tools to support this sector and increase its productivity within the government revenue base. UNITED NATIONS JOINT HUMAN RIGHTS OFFICE (UNJHRO) MONUSCO-OHCHR Preliminary investigation report on human rights violations and violence perpetrated during demonstrations in Kinshasa between 19 and 21 September 2016 (updated on 7 October 2016) Summary This report of the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) addresses human rights violations and abuses committed between 19 and 21 September 2016 in Kinshasa and other circumstances relevant to understand the overall environment of the demonstrations organized by the opposition platform Rassemblement des forces politiques et sociales acquises au changement, calling for the respect of constitutional timelines for holding national elections. Between 19 and 21 September 2016, the UNJHRO documented over 422 victims of human rights violations in Kinshasa by State agents. In total, the UNJHRO was able to confirm that at least 53 persons, including seven women, two children, and four police agents, were killed. Forty-eight were killed by State actors, while the rest of the perpetrators were not clearly identified. One hundred and forty-three persons, including 13 women and 11 children were injured, of which 75 by State actors and 68 by unidentified perpetrators; and more than 299 people were unlawfully arrested and detained. Violations of the right to freedom of the press, including the arrest of eight journalists, as well as destruction of property including premises belonging to political parties, police stations and shops, have also been documented. These violations resulted in further restricting the enjoyment of civil and political rights in the country. The figures presented in this report are not final, as the UNJHRO has received numerous allegations that are pending confirmation due to access restrictions. -

These places of detention can be classified in the categories set out below: - Prison cells under the authority of the Courts and Tribunals - The lock-ups of the Armed Congolese Forces (FAC) and Congolese National Police (PNC) - The private prisons of certain authorities, both civil and military - Prisons of the Civil and Military Police Forces A) Prisons under the Authority of Courts and Tribunals Most of these places of detention are official, and are the responsibility of the Minister for Justice. Both sentenced prisoners and prisoners on remand can be found there. Currently, in Kinshasa, the Kinshasa Penitentiary and Re-education Centre (CPRK, the Central Prison of Makala), located on the Avenue of the Liberation (formerly 24th November Avenue), Selembao Commune, is the only official detention centre under the authority of the courts and tribunals. -

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a nominally centralized republic with a population of approximately 68 million. The president and the lower house of parliament (National Assembly) are popularly elected; the members of the upper house (the Senate) are chosen by provincial assemblies. Multiparty presidential and National Assembly elections in 2006 were judged to be credible, despite some irregularities, while indirect elections for senators in 2007 were marred by allegations of vote buying. There were many instances in which state security forces acted independently of civilian control and of military command. In all areas of the country, state security forces continued to act with impunity throughout the year, committing many serious abuses, including unlawful killings, disappearances, torture, rape and engaging in arbitrary arrests and detention. Severe and life-threatening conditions in prison and detention facilities, prolonged pretrial detention, lack of an independent and effective judiciary, and arbitrary interference with privacy, family, and home also remained serious problems. Members of the state security forces continued to abuse and threaten journalists, contributing to a decline in press freedom. Internally displaced persons remained a major problem, and the integration of ex-combatants and members of rebel and militia groups (RMGs) into state security forces and governance institutions was slow and uneven. Government corruption remained pervasive, and some corporations purchased minerals from suppliers who financed mining activities by armed entities that committed serious human rights abuses. Elements of the state security forces were charged in the death of one of the country's leading human rights defenders and at times beat or threatened local human rights advocates and obstructed or threatened UN human rights investigators. -

Emergency Plan of Action Final Report Democratic Republic of Congo: Floods DREF operation Operation n° MDRCD016 Date of Issue: 20 September 2016 Date of disaster: 6 December 2015 Operation start date: 18 December 2015 Operation end date: 7 May 2016 Host National Society: Branches covering the districts of Operation budget: CHF 290,625 Debonhomme, Kingabua Ndanu, Kingabua Pécheur and Salongo neighbourhoods of Kinshasa, plus those covering the new municipalities of Kindele, Kimbondo, Masanga-Mbila and Ngansele neighbourhoods in the Mont N'Gafula municipality. The National Society will cover 3 staff, 4 NDRTs, 10 supervisors, and 60 volunteers for this operation. Number of people affected: 10,560 people (2,112 families) Number of people assisted: 5,115 persons (875 families) N° of National Societies involved in the operation: 6 National Societies, namely DRC Red Cross, Belgian Red Cross, Canadian Red Cross, Spanish Red Cross and Swedish Red Cross. N° of other partner organizations involved in the operation: The operation was also supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. A. Situation analysis Description of the disaster Intensive rains in the DRC, starting from mid-November 2015, caused flooding across the country. As of 6 December 2015, these torrential rains caused the overflowing of the Ndjili and Congo Rivers, causing flooding in the municipalities of Limeté (in Kingabua Ndanu and Kingabua Pecheur neighbourhoods) and Matete (Debonhome and Salongo neighbourhoods) in Kinshasa. Some 10,560 people were affected (2,112 families), while 31 deaths and several injuries were recorded. An estimated 1,696 families (8,480 people) were displaced, having lost their homes and property following the floods.
