  • Female Contemporary Choreographers Modern Dance
Female Contemporary Choreographers Modern Dance Crystal Pite (born 1970) is a Canadian choreographer and dancer. She began her dance career in Ballet BC, and in 1996 she joined Ballet Frankfurt under the tutelage of William Forsythe. Upon returning to Vancouver, she focused on choreographing while continuing to dance in her own pieces. In 2002 she created Kidd Pivot. Also in 2009 Pite, created Emergence for the National Ballet of Canada as part of the program Innovation. The dance mimicked the movement of insects, which was a metaphor for human behaviour. Some of the themes in the piece included hive mentality, hierarchical mentalities and gender issues. The dancers often performed the same movements but at random " intervals throughout the piece. Twyla Tharp (born 1941) is an American dancer, choreographer, and author who lives and works in New York City. In 1966, she formed her own company Twyla Tharp Dance. Her work often uses classical music, jazz, and contemporary pop music. From 1971 to 1988, Twyla Tharp Dance toured extensively around the world, performing original works. In 1973, Tharp choreographed Deuce Coupe to the music of The Beach Boys for the Joffrey Ballet. Deuce Coupe is considered to be the first crossover ballet. Later she choreographed Push Comes to Shove (1976), which featured Mikhail Baryshnikov and is now thought to be the best example of the crossover ballet. ! Female Contemporary Choreographers Modern Dance Philippina "Pina" Bausch (1940 –2009) was a German performer of modern dance, choreographer, dance teacher and ballet director. With her unique style, a blend of movement, sound, and prominent stage sets, and with her elaborate collaboration with performers during the development of a piece (a style now known as Tanztheater), she became a leading influence in the field of modern dance from the 1970s on.

Postgraduate Choreography in The Place Introducction Pina Bausch and the Tanztheater Wuppertal have been fundamental in the inter- national establishment of Tanztheater as a new and independent dance genre, and their impact is evident and vibrant in the current contemporary dance scene. To support this statement I will first unfold the history of modern dance in Germany, from Rudolf Laban and the German expressive dance movement of the 1920’s, to the creations of Kurt Jooss and finally the formation of Tanztheater Wuppertal in 1973. I will then study Bausch’s life and work, and reveal the essential and unique characteristics of her style, to ultimately prove the ongoing influence of her legacy, looking at one of the final pieces of the 2013 London based choreographic competition The Place Prize.

E‐ISSN 2237‐2660 Passing on Dance: practices of translating the choreographies of Pina Bausch Gabriele Klein Hamburg University, Hamburg – Germany ABSTRACT – Passing on Dance: practices of translating the choreographies of Pina Bausch – This text aims to analyze the process of passing on choreographies, as exemplified in the work of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. It presents this process as a praxis of translation. The paper discusses the limitations and possibilities of translating choreography, as well as the specific potential inherent and visible in practices of translating choreographies by Pina Bausch. From a philosophical and sociological perspective of translation theory and based on a methodology of the ‘praxeological production analysis’ (Klein, 2014a; 2015a), I’m using data gathered during rehearsals and two years of interviews with dancers and collaborators of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. The text will demonstrate that the translation of choreographies is characterized by a paradox between identity and difference. Keywords: Dance Theatre. Translation. Identity and Difference.

Centred on the multi- faceted role of Mitreisender as intrinsic to Bausch’s collaborative approach, the limited scope of phenomenological discourse to spectator-centred accounts highlights the need for a broader analytical approach to address the interactive dialectic between spectator, performer and their sensory environment and their physiological engagement in Bausch’s interrogative, exploratory processes.

  • A Study on the Gender Imbalance Among Professional Choreographers Working in the Fields of Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance
Where are the female choreographers? A study on the gender imbalance among professional choreographers working in the fields of classical ballet and contemporary dance. Jessica Teague August 2016 This Dissertation is submitted to City University as part of the requirements for the award of MA Culture, Policy and Management 1 Abstract The dissertation investigates the lack of women working as professional choreographers in both the UK and the wider international dance sector. Although dance as an art form within western cultures is often perceived as ‘the art of women,’ it is predominately men who are conceptualising the works and choreographing the movement. This study focuses on understanding the phenomenon that leads female choreographers to be less likely to produce works for leading dance companies and venues than their male counterparts. The research investigates the current scope of the gender imbalance in the professional choreographic field, the reasons for the imbalance and provides theories as to why the imbalance is more pronounced in the classical ballet sector compared to the contemporary dance field. The research draws together experiences and statistical evidence from two significant branches of the artistic process; the choreographers involved in creating dance and the Gatekeepers and organisations that commission them. Key issues surrounding the problem are identified and assessed through qualitative data drawn from interviews with nine professional female choreographers. A statistical analysis of the repertoire choices of 32 leading international dance companies quantifies and compares the severity of the gender imbalance at the highest professional level. The data indicates that the scope of the phenomenon affects not only the UK but also the majority of the Western world.

Pite founded her dance theatre company Kidd Pivot in 2002. Since then she and the performers with whom she has collaborated have created Lost Action (2006), Dark Matters (2009), The You Show (2010), The Tempest Replica (2011), and Betroffenheit, all while gaining international fame and attention. In this thesis, I am most interested in the latter. Betroffenheit was co-created with Pite and actor Jonathon Young, co-founder and artistic director of Vancouver’s innovative and multi-award-winning Electric Company Theatre. Pite’s choreography integrates theatricality, movement, music, Young’s autobiographical narrative and text, and visual design.

The Choreography of Space: Merce Cunningham and William Forsythe in Context Arabella Stanger Goldsmiths, University of London PhD April 2013 1 I hereby declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own and has not been and will not be submitted, in whole or in part, to any other university for the award of any other degree. Arabella Stanger 2 Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to thank Professor Maria Shevtsova for her rigorous supervision of this thesis. She has shown me the importance, and the enjoyment, of a way of thinking, and how ‘the art’ must lead in the scholarship of dance. Mentorship of this kind is invaluable. I would also like to thank my fellow postgraduate students at Goldsmiths, University of London for on-going conference around our shared and diverse subjects, and Dr Seb Franklin, for some inspiring conversations. I am extremely grateful to Freya Vass-Rhee of The Forsythe Company and David Vaughan of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company for giving me access to real treasures. The archives that have generously facilitated my research are: the Merce Cunningham Dance Company Archive, New York City; the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library; the Judson Memorial Church Collection, Fales Library, New York University; the Laban Archive, London; the National Resource Centre for Dance, University of Surrey, Guildford; and the Bauhaus-Archiv, Berlin. My sincerest thanks go to the Arts and Humanities Research Council, for supporting this project and sponsoring a research trip to New York in 2009. This thesis is dedicated to the memory of Holly Webber.
