Proficiency 2. Doing something well Meaning of Tajwid In application, Tajwid is the science of learning the Arabic letters and • their correct phonetic articulations • the qualities of certain letters when they are pronounced • the significance of different kinds of punctuation marks used in the Quran. The Importance of Tajwid • At the time of the Prophet , may Peace and Blessings be upon him, there was no need for people to study Tajwid because they talked with what is now known as the Tajwid as it was natural for them • When the Arabs started mixing with the non-Arabs and as Islam spread, mistakes in the Quranic recitation began to appear, so the scholars had to record the rules • Presently, because the everyday Arabic that Arabs speak has changed so much from the Classical Arabic with which the Quran was revealed, even the Arabs have to learn the Tajwid Basis of Learning Tajwid • Scholars of Quran of the opinion that reciting the Quran correctly while observing the rules of recitation is an obligation upon each and every Muslim. • This is inline with verse 4, Surah Al-Muzzammil: “…And recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones.” – Al-Muzzammil 73:4 Basis of Learning Tajwid • The noble Prophet pbuh told his followers about the rewards of reciting, studying and teaching the Quran as follows: َ ر ُ َ ََّ ر ُ َ َ ََّ »خ ُْيك رم َم رن ت َعل َم الق ررآن َوعل َم ُ ه« “The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it to others.” – Reported by al-Bukhari, Ibn Majah and Ad-Darimi. -

Abstract Title of Thesis: RACE ACROSS BORDERS: RACE AND TRANSNATIONALISM IN THE FIRST SYRIAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY, 1890-1930 Zeinab Emad Abrahim, Master of Arts, 2013 Thesis Directed By: Professor, Madeline Zilfi Department of History This research explores the transnational nature of the citizenship campaign amongst the first Syrian Americans, by analyzing the communication between Syrians in the United States with Syrians in the Middle East, primarily Jurji Zaydan, a Middle-Eastern anthropologist and literary figure. The goal is to demonstrate that while Syrian Americans negotiated their racial identity in the United States in order to attain the right to naturalize, they did so within a transnational framework. Placing the Syrian citizenship struggle in a larger context brings to light many issues regarding national and racial identity in both the United States and the Middle East during the turn of the twentieth century. Considering a Future in Syria and the Protection of the Right to Culture
THE JOHN MARSHALL REVIEW OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW BEYOND THE DESTRUCTION OF SYRIA: CONSIDERING A FUTURE IN SYRIA AND THE PROTECTION OF THE RIGHT TO CULTURE SARAH DÁVILA-RUHAAK ABSTRACT Although the right to culture has been widely recognized under international human rights, its reach and practical application has been limited in cultural preservation efforts. Individuals and communities that attempt to be part of the decision-making process in preservation efforts often face barriers to access in that process. The need to re-conceptualize the right to culture is vital for its protection and preservation. This article proposes that the right to self-determination must be utilized as a core fundamental principle that enables a disenfranchised individual or community to have ownership in preservation efforts and decide how to shape their identity. It further illustrates how incorporating the “ownership” element of the right to self- determination will strengthen the application of the right to culture in preservation efforts. The article utilizes the destruction of Syrian cultural heritage to discuss the need for further protections under international human rights law. Because Syrian cultural heritage is in peril, it is imperative that the right to culture of Syrians is strengthened for the survival of their culture and identity. Syrian cultural heritage must be preserved by the Syrians and for the Syrians, thus allowing them to directly shape who they are as a people. Read Full License Page 1/24 Abstract Introduction: The huge workload on doctors especially residents, who are the main healthcare providers in public hospitals, in addition to the vanishing incomes and lack of personal safety during the decade-long Syrian crisis, led to further hurdles for the focus on research. Postgraduate students in the medical and paramedical elds must conduct original research projects as part of their graduation requirements. However, that does not reect on the research publications coming from Syria. Methods: A nation-wide cross-sectional study targeting medical, dental, and pharmacy postgraduate students who are at the phase of planning for their required projects. The questionnaire aimed to capture their attitudes towards research, perceived barriers, and previous research experiences. Results: The sample consisted of 429 residents representing about 21.5% of the target population. Nearly all the participants had positive opinion towards the important role of medical research and the signicance of their participation. Agreement was also clear regarding perceived barriers including the lack of adequate training, and research facility. -

Unconsciously, it can damage the meaning and interpretation. One reason is when the reader does not learn and understand in advance the science of how to read the Qur’an correctly and well, known as the science of Tajwid. Among the discussions of Tajwid which plays an important role in maintaining the meaning of the Qur’an verse is the science of Makharij al-Huruf. This science learns how to pronounce the letters of the Qur’an properly and correctly and in accordance with what was taught by the Prophet Muhammad. Mistakes in pronounciation can damage the meaning of the verse, but on the other hand there are also those that do not damage the meaning. For example, ِ read by ِ (the letter of read ح ﻓَ َﺼ ﻞ ﻟَﺮﺑ َﻚ َوْاﻧـَﻬﺮ ﻓَ َﺼ ﻞ ﻟَﺮﺑ َﻚ َواﳓَْْﺮ .where errors in pronouncing the letter will change the original meaning ,(ه like the sound of Keywords: verse, meaning, al-qur’an, tajwid, makharij al-huruf A.
