Lebanon Fire Risk Bulletin Lebanon Fire Risk Bulletin Refer to cadast table condition. CIVILDEDEFENCE Please note that the indicated temperature is at 2 meters height from the ground. General description of potential fire risk situation Symbol Level of Meaning and actions risk Very Very low fire risk. Controlled burning operations can be hardly executed due to high fuel moisture content. Normally VL low wildfires self-extinguish. Low Low fire risk. Controlled burning operations can be executed with a reasonable degree of safety. L Medium Medium-low fire risk. Controlled burning operations can be executed in safety conditions. All the fires need to be ML low extinguished. Medium Medium fire risk. Controlled burning operations would be avoided. All the fires need to be very well extinguished. M Medium Controlled burning is not recommended. Open flame will start fires. Cured grasslands and forest litter will burn readily. Spread is moderate in forests and fast in exposed areas. Patrolling and monitoring is suggested. Fight fires M high with direct attack and all available resources. Ignition can occur easily with fast spread in grass, shrubs and forests. Fires will be very hot with crowning and short High to medium spotting. Direct attack on the head may not be possible requiring indirect methods on flanks. Patrolling H and monitoring the territory is highly suggested. Ignition can occur also from sparks. Fires will be extremely hot with fast rate of spread. Control may not be possible Extreme during day due to long range spotting and crowning. Suppression forces should limit efforts to limiting lateral spread. E Damage potential total. Patrolling and monitoring the territory is highly suggested. Permanent agriculture land covers an area of 201,539 ha, 38.9% of which is used for planting olives, and 31.6% used for citrus fruits. The District of Tyre is considered one of the largest and most fertile coastal plains in the country and accounts for about 20% of the employment in the District in comparison to 8% in the whole country.

Introduction It has become usual to overhear people speak of foreign aid agencies -under the form of International Non-Governmental Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs and NGOs, I\NGOs) - as a prospective source of material support. They are easily perceived as a neutral manifestation of the international presence in the region. In the south of Lebanon, nobody knows the exact name of each of the I\NGOs working in different sectors and what they are responsible for: for people, they are ‘the French’, ‘the Italians’, ‘the Spanish’ and others.     RAPID LIVELIHOODS ASSESSMENT IN SOUTHERN LEBANON TYRE CAZA (S OUTH LEBANON ) AND BINT JBEIL CAZA (N ABATYEH ) Map Source : UN OCHA Final Report Date: 29 th August, 2005 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Save the Children carried out a rapid in the central part of southern Lebanon, covering much of Tyre and Bint Jbeil cazas, from August 18 th to 24 th . The objective was to provide a qualitative description of pre-conflict livelihood patterns in the area and to assess how those activities had been affected by the conflict. The population in the areas of the south assessed rely on various combinations of farming (mainly tobacco), remittances from relatives living overseas, local shops and services, daily labour in agriculture and in businesses and services and a small amount of formal employment. Some families keep cattle and goats, but the numbers are quite small in this area. Between 60-80% of people are involved in agriculture, but most of those do not rely on it alone as tobacco growing is not very lucrative. Incomes were said to be on average around US$500 per month, with the less well off sections of the population reliant on daily labour earning around US$330 per month. This income was more than adequate for purchasing basic needs, and thus levels of absolute poverty were very low. Physical conflict-related damage has mainly been in the form either of severe damage to a large portion of homes and businesses in some villages, or of destruction of a limited number of specific buildings within otherwise undamaged areas. The 34-day conflict led to the displacement of most of the population for 20-30 days in July and early August.
