Currently groundwater only supplies a small proportion of irrigation needs, however there is increasing pressure for people to turn to groundwater because surface water supplies are heavily allocated. Otago Regional Council’s Regional Policy Statements for Water provide for the Otago people and communities having access to water for their present and reasonably foreseeable needs. The Ida Valley is in one of the driest parts of the region and new groundwater sources would be a valuable asset. This report provides an assessment of the likely availability of sustainable sources of groundwater, based on geological data, geophysical surveying and drilling exploratory bores.
