You know the saying: There's no time like the present I found an abundance of wonder and wit in Lumberjanes , a graphic novel series that requires less of a time commitment than the trip to Hogwarts and didn't tip the scale into a children's book for me. Multitalented: Also works as an illustrator for comics. It was great. I see what it's doing, and the craft of the book is excellent, but it just isn't the right flavor for me. But I busted up each time the girls fled pell-mell from some monster, usually moments before one of the characters uttered a curse based on a female cultural pioneer "What the Joan Jett I'd been hearing about this comic for a while, then I received it on my birthday from Josh. Reflections on the Facing Race Conference and Action Items for the Reform Jewish Community Paili Bachrach, Jake Lewis, and Sophie Richardson - NFTY Chicago Rachel Davis - NFTY SAR Robert Feder - NFTY STR Adam Griff - NFTY SAR Regional Director Logan Zinman - NFTY Chicago Senior Regional Director Facing Race was a very diverse gathering of over 2,000 passionate individuals who want to bring racial justice to their communities or workplaces. Every single person at Facing Race was combating “isms.” Luckily for us, they decided to combat ageism that weekend too. We felt like our voices were heard, but even more importantly, like we heard other people’s voices. That was one of the most important takeaways: we have a space where we can actively listen without fear of not getting a chance to respond. We had some important takeaways individually: Everyone at Facing Race so genuinely wanted to be there. After a session on building intersectional coalitions had ended, I continued the conversation with an older black woman named Mandy about the immense amount of potential that exists in partnerships between Jewish youth movements and historically black congregations. She was so energized by the conversation that she said she would come down to Florida during her vacation just to educate NFTY teens about racial justice and offer up her unique life experience. It was so inspiring to see that as much hate as there is in our world, there is so much more love. At a workshop I attended about educational equity, I heard a story that deeply impacted me. A Chicago mayor decided to shut down 49 schools, which were mostly in black neighborhoods, so in protest of the mayor’s racism, all of the parents of the school went on a hunger strike.

  • Comics and Human Rights: Thinking About Us – Queer Inclusion in Comics | LSE Human Rights
201767 Comics and Human Rights: Thinking About Us – Queer Inclusion in Comics | LSE Human Rights Feb 5 2015 Comics and Human Rights: Thinking About Us – Queer Inclusion in Comics Maria Norris MJ Feuerborn is an American queer activist, freelance journalist, and comics enthusiast. She writes for Women Write About Comics and Comicosity. Her comics and culture commentary can be found on her blog or on Twitter at @mjfeuerborn Click here for the introduction to the Comics, Human Rights and Representation Week. Comics are a medium with endless possibilities. Illustrations aren’t constrained by real world limitations, with grounded and abstract imagery allowing for the delivery of very unique messages. The addition of text — as dialogue, narration, or contextual explanations — furthers the ease with which messages are received by readers. This simultaneous presentation of text and art provides endless opportunities as both a method of storytelling and as a tool to express thoughts and concepts. People occupying all reaches of the queer spectrum have been making use of the comics medium for decades, telling stories both fictional and anecdotal, and as a vehicle to catalogue history and promote social change. From handmade booklets once passed out at queer events and bookstores, to the wealth of webcomics now available on the internet, the queer corner of the medium has always been largely doityourself, existing outside of the mainstream comic book industry and selfsustained. No Straight Lines, an anthology edited by Justin Hall and published in 2012 by Fantagraphics, provides an excellent look at this legacy, collecting queer comics from No Straight Lines.

  • Novel Idea for Social Justice: Comics, Critical Theory, and a Contextual Graphic Narratology
A (Graphic) Novel Idea for Social Justice: Comics, Critical Theory, and A Contextual Graphic Narratology Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Karly Marie Grice, M.A. Graduate Program in Education: Teaching & Learning The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Patricia Enciso, Advisor Michelle Ann Abate, Co-advisor Melinda Rhoades, Committee Member Caroline Clark, Committee Member 1 Copyrighted by Karly Marie Grice 2017 Abstract In my dissertation, I develop a combination of structural and critical theories for the medium-specific analysis of comics for children and young adults. I begin by laying a historical foundation of the medium of comics and a visual culture analytic framework to delineate my specific methodology of research, a contextualized graphic narratology. As of the writing of this dissertation, this work is the only extended, single-authored exploration into the construction and implications of comics for children and young adults. Within the following chapters, I combine the medium specific tools of a formalist comics study with the field-based knowledge of the function of children’s and young adult narratives. I use these combined analytic tools to not only further the growth of a new comics scholarship but also to investigate how comics for children and young adults are using the implied reader to push the boundaries of the definition of “child.” Looking at two comics series for young readers, Lumberjanes and the March trilogy, I explore how what I call tools of disruption are woven into the visual constructions in order to play with reader’s experiences and expectations, provoke them into questioning the texts they are reading and the world around them, and push them to lay the foundation for imagined alternatives.

  • BOOM! STUDIOS ANNOUNCES FIRST-EVER “LUMBERJANES” ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL Discover the Next Chapter of the Worldwide Phenomenon in October 2018
BOOM! STUDIOS ANNOUNCES FIRST-EVER “LUMBERJANES” ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL Discover The Next Chapter of The Worldwide Phenomenon in October 2018 Los Angeles, CA (April 10, 2018) – BOOM! Studios is proud to announce LUMBERJANES: THE INFERNAL COMPASS, the historic first original graphic novel in the history of the series that’s sold over a million copies worldwide. Eisner Award-nominated writer Lilah Sturges (Jack of Fables, Justice Society of America) and rising-star artist polterink present an all-new story in Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's camp for Hardcore Lady-Types when Mal, Ripley, Molly, April & Jo become separated during an orienteering outing thanks to a mysterious compass. While Molly begins to feel more and more insecure about the effect of her relationship with Mal on the other girls, a lonely woman explorer is trying to steal the compass…with the help of some weirdly polite automaton butlers, of course. LUMBERJANES: THE INFERNAL COMPASS featured a stunning cover by Alexa Sharpe (Dressed for Death). “I've been a huge fan of Lumberjanes since precisely April 8, 2017 -- I know because that's when I started tweeting about how great it is. It's not just that it's fun and funny and charming--and it is all those things--but it also represents queerness in a way that I think is enormously important. In the world of Lumberjanes being queer is simply accepted and unremarkable, and I respond deeply to that," said writer Lilah Sturges. "The idea of giving young people models of healthy queer relationships is something that really matters to me, and something I could have used myself when I was young. The inspiration behind the story was a conversation with Lumberjanes editor Dafna Pleban about the relationship between Mal and Molly and what it must have been like for them getting together.
