:: View email as a web page :: Coronavirus has turned all touring musicians into housebound music fans. “I haven’t been home this long in 15 years,” Matt Berninger wryly confesses. When reached by phone last week, The National frontman chatted a bit about what’s keeping him occupied lately, including a recently completed solo album, Serpentine Prison, produced by Booker T. Jones. But more than anything he’s been spending his quarantine time listening to familiar favorites. “I’m really gravitating to Willie Nelson for some reason. I’m finding so much comfort in his stuff. And Sufjan Stevens,” he says. “I find a lot of solace in Carrie & Lowell.” We recently tracked Berninger down to talk about one of our favorite quarantine listens, High Violet, which turns 10 today. For The National, High Violet signifies a pivotal moment in their history. Suffused with a musical grandiosity that blows far past its more introverted predecessors, High Violet debuted in the top 5 in the US and UK and permanently ushered them to headliner status in large theaters and arenas. Check out our interview here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" And The Beginning Of The 21st Century OPENING TRACKS HAYLEY WILLIAMS We’ve been talking up the new solo album by Hayley Williams, Petals For Armor, for a while here at Indie Mixtape HQ. While you certainly know Williams’ work with the pop-punk band Paramore, Petals For Armor moves in all sorts of adventurous directions, embracing R&B, art rock, and everything in between.

Matt Berninger and Phoebe Bridgers on how they write what they write The singers and songwriters discuss what goes into their lyrics, what doesn't, and why everything means everything all the time. Matt, I’ve spoken to Carin, your wife and collaborator, about writing lyrics. The process felt really intertwined, where each person lets go of ego and forgets who did what. Matt: Carin speaks really well about writing, and she writes very differently than I do. Writing is a personal process, and it’s hard to write with someone, because people’s tools for getting at the writing, or getting into writing, or their pace and all that, is so different. She observes the way I write, and I observe the way she writes. Sometimes it’s hard to observe the way you, yourself write, and so, sometimes, I learn how I write from her talking about how she observes me write. Phoebe, what do your words start out like? Phoebe: It’s usually a sad tweet or something, almost like something that I think of, or some detail in my life that I write down.

  • Appraisal, Cataloguing, Textual Documentation Issues December 8, 1998 by Robert Pruter
Sound Archives: Appraisal, Cataloguing, Textual Documentation Issues December 8, 1998 by Robert Pruter Introduction The genesis of this paper stems from certain issues regarding sound archives that were raised in a 1997 article called "Appraisal of Sound Recordings for Textual Archivists," by Christopher Ann Paton, Archivist of the Popular Music Collection of the Special Collections Department of Georgia State University's Pullen Library.1The article has a lot of virtues, where it serves terrifically as a basic introduction for textual archivists, who might be in the position of appraising sound recordings, a field completely alien to many of them. Paton provides a comprehensive overview of the types of sound recordings and in describing their nature and their value as archival material. She lists eight types of sound recordings, as follows: (1) commercial recordings, (2) recordings of events, (3) dictation recordings, (4) field recordings, (5) musical, theatrical, and artistic works, (6) broadcast industry recordings, (7) home recordings, and (8) oral histories.2 She also describes the various forms of sound recordings, as follows: (1) Grooved phonodiscs, with subcategories as acetates and dictation discs. Paton neglects to mention test pressings. (2) Magnetic tape, with such categories as reel-to-reel, cassette, eight-track, digital audiocassettes.3 Paton does not mention CDs because at the time of her essay she did not believe they were being commonly offered to archives.4 This surely may be changing, as corporate sound archives in particular must save CDs especially if they are record companies. Private repositories are also collecting CDs as well.5 To keep the scope of the subject narrow and focused, this paper will primarily concern itself with commercial sound recordings, primarily recorded grooved discs, although other kinds of sound recordings will be discussed as well as certain paper-based materials that are also found in sound archives.
