A 2017 Guide FEATURE ARTICLE Training Opera’s Next Generation A Tale of Two Festivals April 2017 Festivals Editor’s Note In our largest and most varied Guide to Summer Festivals yet, we focus on a common thread: training the next generation of performers and the artistic personnel who support them. At many festivals, young artists receive private lessons, coaching sessions, master classes, or all of the above during the day. By night they are either performing, observing the seasoned pros who train them by day, or a combination of the two. But honing or developing the skills of tomorrow’s generation of musicians is only part of the equation. It’s summertime, after all, and while the living may not exactly be “easy,” it’s certainly a lot more relaxed than during the season or school year. Consider the difference between waiting in the green-room line post-concert A 2017 Guide to shake the maestro’s hand vs. running into him in the festival cafeteria line, or at the local pub after the concert, or on a morning jog. Such is the kind of cross-fertilization for which festivals are known, and one of the reasons they are such ideal settings for rising artists. Sometimes the trainees are fully integrated into the schedule, such as at the Santa Fe Opera, where young artists are featured, often in leading roles. Sometimes they work independently of the main event, such as at Tanglewood, where the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, for instance, is comprised entirely of TMC Fellows and plays its own concerts, alongside the center-stage Boston Symphony Orchestra (whose members form much of the faculty).

NOTE FROM NICOLE Dear Friends, This world premiere of Today It Rains marks a true milestone for Opera Parallèle, our first full scale commissioned work. This production embodies the spirit in which OP was founded, to work in ‘parallel’ with great artists and our community. Collaboration is at the heart of what we do and I believe that a positive collaborative experience can elevate a production to a whole new level. Working with Laura, Mark, Kimberly, and the rest of the creative team over the last three years has been a truly wonderful experience—I’m sure you will see this translated onto the stage. I have been humbled by the opportunity to bring the story of Georgia O’Keeffe to the operatic stage. Discovering just how influential and groundbreaking she was as an artist and as a woman has heightened my awareness of the privilege of being a female artistic leader. In particular I’m so pleased we are able to create this work with a brilliant female composer and many female creatives. This trailblazing spirit also inspired OP to celebrate women in the Bay Area who, like O’Keeffe, are breaking the mold, defying expectations, and pushing the boundaries of their field. I hope you were able to join us for the ‘Georgia & the Rebels’ event before tonight’s performance as we honor these brilliant women. NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XIX, Number 1 April 2004 THE THOMAS BAKER COLLECTION In 1985 the Music Library of The University of Western Ontario acquired the bulk of the music collection of Thomas Baker (c.1708-1775) of Farnham, Surrey from the English antiquarian dealer Richard Macnutt with Burnett & Simeone. Earlier that same year what is presumed to have been the complete collection, then on deposit at the Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, was described by Richard Andrewes of Cambridge University Library in a "Catalogue of music in the Thomas Baker Collection." It contained 85 eighteenth-century printed titles (some bound together) and 10 "miscellaneous manuscripts." Macnutt described the portion of the collection he acquired in his catalogue The Music Collection of an Eighteenth Century Gentleman (Tunbridge Wells, 1985). Other buyers, including the British Library, acquired 11 of the printed titles and 4 of the manuscripts. Thomas Baker was a country gentleman and his library, which was "representative of the educated musical amateur’s tastes, include[d] works ranging from short keyboard pieces to opera" (Macnutt, i). Whether he was related to the Rev. Thomas Baker (1685-1745) who was for many years a member of the choirs of the Chapel Royal, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey, is not clear. Opera Project That Received NEA Funding
Nov 2018 Under the Freedom of Information Act, agencies are required to proactively disclose frequently requested records. Often the National Endowment for the Arts receives requests for examples of funded grant proposals for various disciplines. In response, the NEA is providing examples of the “Project Information” also called the ”narrative” for a successful Opera project that received NEA funding.
