SPEAKERS SHARE THEIR BEST SECRETS ON BUILDING RESILIENT KIDS Prof. Lea Waters, PhD. How to Stop Seeing Your Child Through Their Flaws.

She's the 2017-2019 President of the International Positive Psychology Association,

She serves on the Council of Happiness and Education for the World Happiness Council,

And authored the book: “Strength-Based Parenting.”

Two things are true for all parents around the world:

1. Parents want kids to flourish

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. 2. Parents feel inadequate for this task.

But how do we go about it? A lot of us parents find ourselves saying this to their kids, in their heads: “I Love You. But I Have to Fix You.”

We tell ourselves:

“As a parent, isn't it my job to make sure my kids basically survive long enough to give me grandkids? To keep the family line going? Everything I do, is so they don't end up broke, homeless or putting their eye out from running with scissors”

Or, to put it another way: “I have to identify every potential way they could fail, or even worse, every potential way they could be mediocre. And fix it.”

Research says we should try STRENGTH-BASED PARENTING instead.

• Strength-Spotting • Strength-Switching • Permission to be Human.

ADVANTAGES OF TAKING A STRENGTH BASED APPROACH:

• More happiness and engagement at school • Higher grades • More happiness at work • Better work performances • More likely to be happy in marriage and stay in marriage • Reduced risk of depression Afraid of missing one of your favorite sessions? “Each day of our lives we make deposits into the memory banks of our children.”

Their mission: To help families return to the joy of parenting through a strengths-based approach that focuses on what's right with their children rather than what's wrong with them.

• Remember the story of Bob Parr - Mr. Incredible, in the movie “The Incredibles?” Remember how miserable he was when he was trying to live an ordinary life, and work an ordinary job? A lot of us find ourselves in that place as parents. We lose our own joy, and resign ourselves to a dutiful existence as parents.

• Modeling how to live a fulfilled life: "Joy happens when we stop getting by and boldly start developing our strengths."

• If we want our kids to thrive, we have to “Find Our Own Super.” Before we help them find theirs.

• Awareness Leads to Authenticity: One of the keys to doing so, is to abandon unrealistic expectations we may have for ourselves.

• Another is to overcome imposter syndrome, as parents.

MASTER THE DETAILS ON HOW TO FIND YOUR OWN SUPERPOWER AS AN INCREDIPARENT… so you can model for your child how to find theirs.

1. millions of children are growing up in a world that doesn’t respect, support, or embrace who they inherently are. Afraid of missing one of your favorite sessions? 2. The big-picture vision for TILT is to foster a generous online community where parents raising atypical kids can tap into resources that will help them feel informed, inspired, optimistic, and supported. 3. On the outside, our kids might look like any other kid. 4. On the inside, our kids are often having a hard time. 5. But as parents, we’re often struggling too. Sometimes a lot 6. Imagine what would happen—for us, for our families, and for the world—if instead of our children’s differences being treated as flaws in need of fixing, they were appreciated, embraced…even celebrated?

For the parents who love them, the challenges are just as hard—

• struggling to find the right school, • the right therapist, • the right parenting groups • while feeling isolated and harboring endless internal doubts about what’s normal, what’s not, and how to handle it all.

Debbie Reber's son who is twice exceptional (he has ADHD, Asperger’s, and is highly gifted), is very aware of how differently-abled he is. But he doesn’t view it as a disability. He views it as a superpower. This is one of the many TiLTs that Debbie teaches to parents of kids who are differently-wired / differently-abled…

Categorizing with a positive label, in a way that makes atypical people just another brand of normal

What if we started treating different people like they were all the same?

Differently Wired is a how-to, a manifesto, a book of wise advice, and the best kind of been- there, done-that companion.

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. Some of the TiLTs that have enabled young Asher to be more heroic, include:

1. TILT 1: Question Everything You Thought You Knew About Parenting 2. TILT 2: Get Out of Isolation and Connect 3. TILT 3: Let Go of What Others Think 4. TILT 4: Stop Fighting Who Your Child Is and Lean In 5. TILT 5: Parent from a Place of Possibility Instead of Fear 6. TILT 6: Let Your Child Be on Their Own Time Line 7. TILT 7: Become Fluent in Your Child's Language

MASTER HOW TO IMPLEMENT THESE TiLTS, SO THAT YOU AND YOUR DIFFERENTLY-WIRED KID CAN FEEL LESS OVERWHELEMED, AND MORE HEROIC, in this incredible conversation with Debbie Reber.

David Rendall is the author of The Freak Factor, The Freak Factor for Kids and The Pink Goldfish.

He's a leadership professor, a stand-up comedian, and a nonprofit executive.

He's spoken to audiences on every inhabited continent. And not just to kids, colleges, and parents. We're talking: The US Air Force, Australian Government, Microsoft, AT&T, State Farm.

In between presentations, David competes in ultramarathons and Ironman triathlons.

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. David Rendall says our kids can DISCOVER UNIQUENESS by FLAUNTING THEIR WEAKNESS.

David was relentlessly teased as a child, for being too tall, for being too skinny, for his inability to stop talking.

He struggled with following rules… he was called silly & immature. His Principal even told him that he would be a failure.

Ironically – the things that people criticized when he was a child, and told him to do less of, he found that as an adult, he was being asked to do MORE of! They were leading to his success, not to his ridicule.

- Tall --> Basketball Scholarship - Skinny & Hyper --> Marathon Runner - Talked too Much --> Public Speaker - Not Good at Following Rules --> Entrepreneur - Silly & Immature --. Stand-Up Comedian

What makes you different? What do you want to change about yourself?

Ask this same question about your child.

Negativity Bias: As humans, and as parents, we have a negativity bias. We see what's wrong, and miss what's right. It helped us to survive in dangerous situations. But most situations are no longer dangerous or life-threatening, in modern society. And yet, we approach many situations, especially parenting, as if they are life-threatening situations.

• A lot of times in India - you need to speak a particular language, or be from a particular state, to fit in with those same people • Now I have more of a global mindset, and appreciate it as a blessing. • But I was never confused about my identity • I never let my heritage define me - I was more than that. • For me: Hindi is a language I speak. As is English. • They don't define me.

• Cultivate Cultural Talent Within One way to build resilience in your kids, and to help them thrive in a multi-cultural world, is to empower them to cultivate a talent within their culture. So that they can have pride (a positive pride – not better than others, but appreciative of heritage.) • Dancing. My identity is: I'M A DANCER AND A WRITER • Mom wanted to learn when she was young • She learned for a few years, then her grandparents asked her to stop - felt it was improper • But as a child, I naturally took to dancing - she took to it • Whenever music plays, I dance. I can't help it - it's a problem. LOL! Dance and music are a huge part of my life. • So, it's a huge part of my kids' lives. • Even today, I have IMPROMPTU DANCE PARTIES WITH THE KIDS. • Not just to Indian music - kids bop dance videos, etc. • I learned that part from my kids - because I don't know much American music. Just Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson. LOL! But my kids teach me the latest songs, and we dance together. • I teach classical Indian dance here in the , to multi-cultural audiences. • And would you know? My Mom is 65 and has performed with our group! she now dances regularly, and is inspiring lots of people with her return to dance as an adult. Her parents made her feel ashamed of our cultural dancing, when she was a girl. But now my kids dance with their grandmother, and connect on their heritage. And that,

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. is invaluable. That builds my kids’ self-worth, and self-esteem. And you know what? It does the same for my grandmother.

TIFFANY SHLAIN.

Where the focus on unplugging came from. I founded and ran the Webby Awards for 10 years. This was in the really early days of the Web. There was nothing else around like it.

Eventually, I wanted to get back to filmmaking. My husband and I had our first daughter. Life was good. All was well.

Then, we learned father had brain cancer. Right when we learned of my pregnancy with our second child. It was such a bittersweet period of life. I was able to have such important conversations with my father. I was able to say goodbye. My father died, and days later, I gave birth to our second daughter.

It made me think so deeply about connection and life. How valuable, fragile, and short it is. And how important it is to unplug. To give it all in this lifetime.

It made me ask: "How can I make the world a better place?"

Technology and Connectedness. You're not actually addicted to your cell phone. You're addicted to how you feel when you connect with someone. Connectedness creates more oxytocin – the love hormone. It decreases fear and anxiety. When we use technology to connect, we get a rush of that hormone, and it feels good.

Technology is not all bad. It extends our ability to connect.

Afraid of missing one of your favorite sessions? Upgrade Your Ticket to the Raising Resilient Kids Summit All Access Pass now. This pass gives lifetime access to all event sessions, plus over $2,000 in bonuses.

But these connections are meaningless unless we connect DEEPLY.

We can shape it and use it how we want to.

When my Dad was sick, my family and I decided to unplug for 24 hours, once a week

How can kids and families pursue INTER-DEPENDENCE?

Tiffany goes deep on how we can still leverage technology for the good it does, but also unplug and help our kids to connect more deeply – with their family, with their friends, and even with their community.

This was an inspiring conversation – one that could change your family tree forever. Don’t miss it.

The Problem: The research is clear. Our ability to build positive relationships is under assault.

NARCISSISM AND EMPATHY: 2014 Harvard Study of 10,000 College Freshmen

1. Narcissism in college freshmen increased by 30% since 2006 2. Empathy decreased by 40% since 2006, according to separate studies from San Diego State University and the University of Michigan.

ACHIEVEMENT VS. CARING

A 2014 study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education asked middle and high school students to rank what was most important to them: achieving at a high level, happiness (feeling good most of the time), or caring for others.

Almost 80% of students picked high achievement or happiness.

Revealingly, students were 3x more likely to agree than disagree with this statement:

“My parents are prouder if I get good grades in school than if I’m a caring member of my community and school.”

LONELINESS

A 2018 study of 20,000 adults, found that loneliness is an “epidemic” in America — with 18-22- year-olds the loneliest of all generations.

Why are relationships so important?

Positive relationships are the cornerstone of health, happiness, and resilience…and jobs of the future.

HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. Harvard University has a nearly 80-year ongoing study that followed 724 men, from two different socioeconomic cohorts, across their lifespans to track health and well-being. The director, Dr. Robert Waldinger, summarized their findings:

“The lessons aren’t about wealth or fame or working harder and harder. The clearest message that we get from this study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period.”

Bottom Line?

Relationships > Fame, Wealth & Achievement

But how do we teach our kids to develop positive relationships? How do we make character development a part of their everyday education? Don’t miss this riveting talk with Mike Erwin, co-founder of The Positivity Project.

Heather Haupt: How to Raise Courageous & Compassionate Boys.

Sought-After Speaker. Author: Knights-In-Training.

She's the Mother of 3 Knights-In-Training, and a Spunky Princess

She's an educator. writer. and popular speaker.

Recognizing the power of a parent's influence, she wants to raise kids that will make a difference in this world

This heroic Mom equips parents to practice INTENTIONAL PARENTING and delighting in the adventure of learning.

She's the author of Knights-In-Training: 10 Principles for Raising Honorable, Compassionate Boys.

And if she were a superhero, SHE WOULD BE CAPTAIN AMERICA!

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. HEATHER HAUPT.

The problem: Boys in today's culture are encouraged to be rude, crude, and disengaged.

I started Knight Training 6.5 years ago, after reading a book about knights. My boys got into playacting afterwards. As they were raging sword battles all around me, I saw it and said: "Look at how engaged they are…This is an opportunity to teach them about chivalry.”

I researched this. I discovered that chivalry was more than how a man treats a woman. It was a CODE-OF-CONDUCT. A WAY OF LIVING.

Defend and protect

Stand against injustice

Speak the truth

Do your best

Persevere

I printed and posted the knights code of conduct. Told the boys we would do KNIGHT TRAINING. I asked: are you up to the challenge, and they said: “YES!”

They were 6, 4, and almost 3. They really took to it, and started being on the lookout for ways to live out chivalry in their day-to-day lives

It has changed our family.

It changed how we communicate.

It's given my husband and I a sense of purpose.

It's giving our boys a sense that they are growing up to be amazing men. Instead of saying: "Don't create toy weapons", we give them guidelines. "Here's how to have a foam sword-fight with honor."

That is your mission. If the vision you're dreaming of today is ordinary in a sea of ordinary, it won't create enthusiasm.

Real leadership is inviting people on a mission to do something extraordinary together.

The World Is Filled with Good People. It may feel some days that the world is overwhelming you with darkness, but there are good people everywhere. But they need spaces created by parents that will allow them to invest in others. That changed the definition of LEADERSHIP for me.

One of the greatest gifts we can offer is supporting each other’s dreams.

There's a superhero in all of us. We just need the courage to put on the cape. As a parent, ask yourself what is really important. Then have the courage to build your life around your answer. Your kids will see you, and it will inspire them to do the same.

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. In actuality, my purpose is bigger than me. Your purpose is bigger than you. The things you accomplish for yourself will disappear. Your lasting legacy is the investment you make in others. The investment you make in your children, first-and-foremost.

To understand your impact ask yourself: "What do my kids believe about themselves, after spending time with me?”

Leadership isn't about building an empire where you can get the world to serve you. It's about knowing that you're on a mission to serve the world

Don't try to trick and manipulate people – your kids or otherwise - into serving your needs. Serve them. That mentality is what builds LEGACY.

1. Why don't we talk to our kids about pornography? Parents are afraid that by discussing bad pics they will make their kids curious

And – let’s be frank – we don’t do it because we don’t want to feel uncomfortable.

But kids are getting exposed between 9 and 12 years old (some younger)

3. There is peer pressure from friends 4. A lot of the content the content was behind a paywall (in the 90s and 2000s) 1. But now it's a different business model, like a YouTube model 2. You get a lot of the stuff for free, as long as you see the advertisements 3. There's premium, which you do pay for... 4. But there's so much free stuff out there 5. In many cases kids are even easily stumbling into the hardcore stuff. It’s terrible.

2. Study done on college kids - those whose parents discussed pornography proactively, are less prone to use it

3. When you teach kids to reject porn and to tell you when they've seen it, they are also prepared to reject child abusers Predators use pornography to groom children

4. Child-on-child sexual abuse- Kids may initially watch pornography because they're curious about biology and intimacy. Then many they imitate. We parents think they know intrinsically that porn isn't good for children – but some kids are more curious than others. It is silent but it is happening-

5. Sextortion (esp. Snapchat)- Totally on the rise It’s one of the biggest problems with kids & the internet-

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. Porn performers are now ON Snapchat They feature teaser videos on Snapchat – any child can see it By talking to kids about porn, you protect them from:

Kids go to porn for four reasons: 1. Sexual Integrity: Some kids “hire” pornography to help them learn about sex when parents wait too long or never explain what sex is.

2. Emotional Resilience: Some kids begin looking at pornography out of curiosity, but continue using it to distract themselves from negative emotions. This is a pathway to addiction that can be avoided with emotional management skills and tools.

3. Screen Accountability: All kids need to understand how to use technology in safe, healthy ways.

4. Brain & Body Safety: All kids need to know what pornography is, why it’s harmful and how to keep their brains safe by rejecting it with a plan. - As a family:

The value of being a playful parent • Fostering confidence instead of powerlessness • Fostering emotional recovery instead of emotional distress

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. It’s important to join children in their world When kids are having a difficult time connecting with peers or adults, child-led play helps. When things are changing in children's lives, child-led play helps. And yet – for many adults it is HARD to play!

Playing Actually Encourages Your Child’s Confidence

It allows your child to feel powerful, in a world where children often feel powerless. It prepares your child for the world, by allowing them to test the boundaries of their strength, while also learning how to not play so hard as to cause injury to a friend or family member. This is so important, that it is actually worth losing your dignity, to find your child.

We encourage parents to roughhouse with their kids YES – we want you to play fight! But there’s a good way to do it. A safe way to do it.

Dealing with and Accepting Strong Feelings (theirs and yours)

Too often we encourage our kids, especially boys, to contain their feelings instead of releasing them. There are ways to handle tantrums and frustrations, in a healthy fashion… there are ways to handle the expression of anger, or our children’s tears, in a healthy fashion, even a playful one, without forcing them to shut down emotionally, or for that matter, allow them to embrace a habit of whining.

It is worth rethinking the way we discipline.

1. Cool off 2. Make a connection 3. Choose a "meeting on the couch" over a "time-out"

The implications: less happy, less resilient kids. Lower self-esteem

The difference between self-esteem and self-confidence in Denmark: Self Esteem: How you feel about who you are. Regardless of performance. "To rest well within yourself." Self-Confidence: The things you CAN do / already good at.

You can have self-confidence in a situation, but LOW self-esteem, or high self-esteem.

Analogy of a tree: • Upper-part: Confidence (what you can see. Branches, leaves) • Lower part: Esteem (Roots, trunk. Not seen from afar, but the foundation)

Modern society has pushed us parents to focus so much on the upper-part – the branches. Visible, external confidence. What can be seen from afar.

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software.

Unfortunately, we do that while neglecting the roots and trunk of the tree. The self-esteem. It’s not always noticeable from afar, but it’s the foundation for long-term well-being, fulfillment happiness of our children.

What Our Kids Need:

• More unstructured play (Pediatricians are being asked to prescribe free play!) • Less STUFF • Less academic pressure • SLOW DOWN • Happier kids • Less over-scheduling • More independence

Lenore Skenazy is the president of Let Grow, a non-profit promoting childhood independence and resilience.

Her controversial decision to let her then-9-year-old son take the New York City Subway home alone became a national story and prompted massive media attention.

She was dubbed, "America's Worst Mom", and even garnered a reality show of that same name in the process!

In response, Skenazy founded the book and blog "Free-Range Kids," with the aim of "fighting the belief that our children are in constant danger from creeps, kidnapping, germs, grades, Afraid of missing one of your favorite sessions? She's lectured everywhere from Microsoft to DreamWorks to the Sydney Opera House… She has written for everyone from The Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. Yes -- Mad… She's been profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The New Yorker. (She was even on The Daily Show!)

Is she America's Worst Mom? You be the judge.

As parents and as a society, we have to fight the belief that our children are in constant danger from: - creeps, - kidnapping, - sleepovers - germs, - frustration, - bullies,

- failure, - bugs, - men,

It’s not that these things can’t be dangerous in specific situations – it’s that we’ve magnified every random and rare potential occurrence into an inevitability, resulting in a complete sheltering and bubble-wrapping of our kids.

Why are we more scared than our parents were, when we were kids? There are a few specific reasons:

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. • The media (news, crime shows) • We’ve become a more litigious and regulated society • We have more of an “Expert culture” (There are books on every topic, causing us to sometime forego our natural human parental instincts.) • Kid Safety industry is a for-profit industry. (Did you know that baby knee pads exist, for babies who are learning to crawl/walk?)

Modern Childhood is Completely Strange… (And Missing Some Crucial Elements, Like:) • Mixed-age playdates. • Giving kids room to make mistakes. • Unstructured playtime

We are Drilling Kids to “Succeed”: More and more kids are specializing in a single sport, or musical instrument, or hobby, for the benefit of a career, vs being generalists and learning more broadly for the benefit of life.

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. How to Get Kids Started as Kidpreneurs (If they have no ideas or no interest):

• Find what they're passionate about • Encourage them to be creative • Give them permission • Encourage them to think up wacky solutions to problems they see in the world (-ex- why is school boring) • Or to explore their everyday world, and do what they find fun • It's okay if they float from idea-to-idea • Even if it fizzles out after a week, you still learn lessons from it

How to execute on that idea:

• Capture all their creative ideas (Maybe in a journal or notebook) o We're big on idea lists / wish lists o We’ve done since Nikhita was about 3 years old o We even have pictures in there that I don't remember where we were going with that o We could always revisit original themed ideas later, and build to them (-ex- we don't have a Black original bow, why don't we make a black original bow?) o Otherwise you'll have a space of half-executed ideas

• Encourage them to execute on one idea at a time

• Help them create a system around their idea o It may be lemonade stands o Making your displays o How do we get customers

Consult your physician regarding the applicability of any opinions or recommendations with respect to you or your child's symptoms or medical condition.

During my time in the public schools, I realized that I wanted to work with children with complex presentations of social, emotional, and behavioral concerns.

Two things I'm most passionate About:

1. Helping parents let go of the ideas that they were going to be able to control their kids' destiny

2. Social-Emotional Learning (Most important skill for the world. It's not book smarts.)

Here’s the thing, fellow parents. You're not raising "a better version of yourself".

o Your child is not you. Parent the child you have, not the one you imagined. o Parents are worried about kids (academic) success... o but I see their success as being a wholehearted person o For some parents they never realize that they're not raising themselves o The realization: "Oh, my kid CAN'T do this." (Parents of many neuro-diverse kids.)

If your child struggles with social interactions – how do you know if they’re shy, anti-social, or maybe have something deeper going on?

o Often shyness is mild social anxiety o There is a difference between knowing what to do socially but feeling anxious or introverted vs. not knowing what to do social so we need to teach social skills

How to Build Your Child's Social Skills

Stress and anxiety come from expectations being higher than skills. A child must first feel safe and regulated before expanding their social skills. Self-regulation starts with co-regulation.

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. A child must first feel comfortable in an environment (classroom/playground) before working on skills that are difficult for them (asking someone to play or being flexible in play)

Have them notice the thoughts and feelings they have about what they are observing others do.

Social Comprehension begins with play

We develop social comprehension by pretend playing long before we are reading stories and teachers are measuring reading comprehension.

Some tips and techniques:

1. You will eliminate 90% of undesirable behavior, by defining the expectation.

2. Catch your children doing the right thing and praise them for it.

3. Ignore inappropriate behavior.

4. Mirror neurons: Reinforce desired behavior. Smiles, Hugs, Verbal Praise, Whisper, Gentle touch, Common Courtesy (Greetings, Acknowledge Feelings, Helpfulness, Gratitude)

If you can regulate your emotions, work in a group, be a leader or collaborative follower... those are the skills that would make you most successful. I would rather a 6yo not be able to read, but get upset and be able to regulate themselves and get back to work

Dr. Bill Stixrud & Ned Johnson: How to Help Your Kid Feel More Self-Driven Academically.

Their book, THE SELF-DRIVEN CHILD: has been described as: o …A battle plan to attack the anxiety that's devouring kids and decimating their native potential. o …A light into the darkness of test dread, chronic sleeplessness, 24/7 social-media. o …Demonstrates how unremitting achievement pressure is toxic to our children. o …One of the most important books on raising healthy, resilient, purpose-driven kids. o …Proves parental over-control is eroding kids’ competence and mental health.

The culture of modern parenting:

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. • Micro-managing homework • Countless extra-curricular activities • Putting grades as the only measure of success • Low sense of control (Mental, physical health, longevity, academic success) • Lots of kids feel helpless, hopeless, overwhelmed How to feel a stronger sense of control (Confidence) Bill: Works with young kids for whom school isn't easy (lots of headwinds and challenges) Ned: Works with Juniors in high school who are overly driven and doing really well

The Twin-Scourge for kids: Motivational Disorders 1. Epidemic of stress-related mental health issues 1. 37% increase in depression (esp. in affluent, high-achieving areas) 2. In a Palo Alto high school with recent suicides, 80% reported high chemical use 3. When stress is turned on and stays on for a long time, it makes the amygdala (stress responder) BIGGER. And the pre-frontal cortex (that regulates the rest of the brain (SMALLER). We don't want kids growing up being highly stressed. 2. Kids are not getting enough sleep • High-achieving kids are afraid - if they aren't top 10% in HS, they won't be anything in life.

Self-Determined Motivation Theory: This is what our kids need. 1. A Sense of Competence 2. A Sense of Relatedness (My favorite subject is math... because of the teacher) 3. A Sense of Autonomy (What I do makes a difference)

#3 is the most important. Parents tend to sacrifice a LOT for #1 (Competence) - travel soccer team, math tutoring at age 6, etc. But it's like a 3-legged tool. If you make #1 really strong and long, but the other 2 are sacrificed, it doesn't make for higher heights. It makes for something that topples over. A sense of autonomy is the only one of the three that can and should receive oversized attention and development.

What is a No Brain? 1. Reactive and fearful, rigid and shut-down, worrying that it might make a mistake 2. Tends to focus on external achievement and goals, not on internal effort and exploration 3. Might lead to gold stars and external success, but does so by rigidly adhering to conventional and the status quo... 4. And becoming good at pleasing others, to the detriment of curiosity and joy

I was a smart kid, but got bad grades because he experienced severe and prolonged bullying problems. I was told to be tough. To deal with it. “Boys will be boys.” A lot of our kids are getting the same sort of advice today.

• Our kids aren't doing so great: According to research, they are STRESSED, TIRED & BORED • Teachers neither: According to research, they are Frustrated, overwhelmed, stressed • We studied 15,000 ppl across the US workplace. STESSED AS WELL.

How people HOPE to feel: Happy, (respected, accomplished, valued, appreciated)

But why are feelings are often regarded as weakness, in both genders?

• Boys are supposed to suppress or overcome their weaker emotions. • Girls, maybe more so women, are supposed to leave their emotions at home when in the workplace.

Why do emotions matter? Isn’t there a time and place to be emotional, and a time and place to control one’s emotions?

• Over the last 6 years, there has been a 20% increase EACH YEAR in college students seeking mental health • Depression will be the leading cause of disability across the US within 20 years. • If kids don't have the strategies to manage their feelings when they're trying to be creative, they won't achieve their dreams because they will get harsh criticism, and will give up.

Can one increase one’s emotions Intelligence? Yes. Through the 5 key skills of emotional intelligence.

What's the big deal about middle school, anyway?

Middle school is a stew of simmering hormones, shifting relationships and increased academic demands. Kids feel unmoored when they most want to fit in.

As parents of middle schoolers, we need help figuring out how to be supportive, while still encouraging autonomy. There are 10 key skills that all middle schoolers will want to master, in order to thrive in those otherwise awkward Middle School years.

1. VALUES & INTEGRITY: Making responsible, healthy, and ethical decisions. Fostering honesty. Encouraging kindness and empathy. Embracing difference in self and others.

2. SOCIAL SKILLS (I feel judged and ignored): Managing shifting friendships. Dealing with bullying. Coping with gossip and social turmoil. Growing up sexually healthy. Preparing for love.

3. LEARNING (Everyone is getting A's except for me): Encouraging balance and setting reasonable expectations. Tackling homework. Intervening when school is a struggle.

4. EMPOWERMENT AND RESILIENCE (There are all sorts of people in the world, and we'll all find our place.") Connecting with boys and helping them connect with others. Raising strong, empowered girls. Taking risks in a world of NO's. Managing setbacks and shoring up resilience. Preparing kids for a changing world.

The Flood Zone.

Most (if not all) of our problems have to do with the way we react to things. When we are triggered, we say things we don’t mean, give our kids punishments they don’t deserve and feel overwhelmed by the simplest of tasks.

Afterwards, we feel regret and beat ourselves up for not handling things differently. To get out of this cycle, we need to understand how the brain works and why we act the way we do.

A Deeper Look: How Anxiety Manifests in the Lives of Children

1. Worry and anxiety are currently the top mental health issues among children and teens.

2. The problem is not with the worries themselves, but that children believe the worries to be true.

How the Brain Works

When you’re calm and relaxed all the blood will be at the top of your brain. This is where rational thinking occurs and when you are capable of making good decisions.

The amygdala is at the bottom of the brain and is the fear center of the body. When the amygdala is triggered by a stressful event, the body responds by sending blood from the top of the brain to the bottom of the brain. This is similar to when you sprain your ankle and it swells. Blood heals and when there is a part of the body that needs help, the body sends blood to heal it.

The problem with blood leaving the top of the brain is that when the blood is gone, rational thinking is gone. This is what I call The Flood Zone and where all of the problems arise.

Kids in The Flood Zone they say things like “It’s not fair!!” “I wish I was never born” “You don’t love me!” Parents are in The Flood Zone say things like “I’m taking away your iPad for a year!” and “You just lost your birthday party!”

Some Things kids do to push us into the flood zone

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. 1. Apparent defiance

2. Not handling responsibilities we've repeatedly told them about

3. Bickering / Sibling rivalry

Three Reasons People Are Mean:

1. Humor: You're the butt of the joke. 2. Hurt: They're upset, and they want revenge. 3. Control: They want to control you. They like to see you suffer.

But with all 3, the best solution is: DON'T GET UPSET... AND LAUGH!

Sponsored by Disney Parks, Melissa & Doug, and Bark Internet Monitoring Software. You don't have to have quick wit. Just respond with:

• That's a Good One. • You should be a comedian! • So? • Advanced: TAKE AND MAKE A JOKE ABOUT YOURSELF.

The Resilience Test. Take this resilience test with your kids.

1. I get easily upset when people insult me or say mean things to me.

• Kids have been taught - words hurt. So, if kids believe words are powerful, these words will have power over them. Physical aggression starts on the verbal level and escalates • Which means we can de-escalate physical aggression on the verbal level.

2. If someone pushes me, and it doesn’t hurt, I can easily ignore it.

• Often one push starts a fight, and before you know it, both kids got suspended

3. When someone is being mean to me and my feelings are hurt, I blame them for hurting me.

• It's not illegal for someone to hurt your feelings • It's not the words or actions that hurt my feelings... • It's my THOUGHTS about the words or actions that hurt my feelings. • Therefore, it's my THOUGHTS that upset me.

4. I laugh and enjoy when someone makes a joke about me.

• There's no funny compliment. Only funny jokes. • And someone or something is always the butt of a joke. • All humor is insulting to someone or something. • OWN your FLAW. (Learn how to leverage and laugh at it)

5. I need people to help me if I am not getting along with other kids.

6. When people leave me out from a group or a party, I stay upset for a long time.

7. When someone is being mean to me, I don’t know how to respond to them.
