Degree awarded in September 2015 ii © 2015 Erica Morton-Starner iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Erica Morton-Starner Doctor of Philosophy Department of English September 2015 Title: The “Mourning Child”: Divine and Mortal Absence in George Herbert’s English and Classical Verse The period of tumultuous religious reformation during which George Herbert lived demanded of people a strict adherence to the paradigmatic structures that prescribed the ways in which public displays of religious conviction were to be manifested. The freedom, indeed the necessity, to doubt is taken for granted by the modern reader, but for Herbert it was a matter of spiritual life and death. As country parson, he diligently labored to guide his parishioners, administer the sacraments, and exemplify the “right path.” This persona—reinforced by necessarily performative, faith-demonstrating actions—is continually destabilized by the experience of doubt, which leads Herbert to address his own persistent despair at the absence of God through poetry. His masterful use of the structural and thematic patterns of the Psalms in many of the poems of The Temple draws on the rich tradition of lament in contrast to the prescriptive, ideological agendas of the Book of Common Prayer and the Common Lectionary which privilege faith. The poems demonstrate an extensive knowledge of the epistemological foundations and history of both official Church doctrine and of medieval mystical thought and become a tool for exploring the paradoxes of human existence. His philosophical and rhetorical engagement with the Christological and ecclesiastical iv theology specific to Dionysian mysticism demonstrates the intensity of Herbert’s preoccupation with Divine absence and his near obsessive search for the ideal apophatic presence, that silent, knowing-unknowing that defines oneness with God. Nowhere are Herbert’s existential dilemmas more evident than in Memoriae Matris Sacrum, a sequence of poems written immediately following the death of his beloved mother, which reveals an inner life of the poet that his more controlled poetic voice of The Temple often conceals. These elegiac poems, written in Latin and Greek, show the poet as a “mourning child” and lay bare his most intimate fears about the constancy of his own faith and the uncertain terms of Christian death and resurrection embodied in the sacred ritual of the Eucharist. So, if you have committed yourself too quickly anywhere, there is no reason for you to be afraid of retreating and setting yourself free; there’s no way out otherwise. Augustine, Soliloquies 2.7.14. 1 This passage from Soliloquies illustrates a particularly fascinating aspect of Augustine’s legacy that is especially relevant to my interest in George Herbert—the notion that in searching for transcendental truth, it is acceptable and even necessary to change one’s mind, to retreat from one point of view in order to be free to radically modify a way of thinking, a pattern of logic, or a vision of oneself at a particular stage in an evolving search. Indeed, George Herbert, in his vernacular and religious verse reveals 1 Augustine. Soliloquies and Immortality of the Soul. Trans. Gerard Watson. Warminister: Aris & Phillips, 1990. 1 a vision of individual subjectivity that is at once self-declaring and self-consuming. 2 Most importantly, this vision is dynamic and represents the poet’s capacity both to commit and to retreat. 3 For Herbert, even knowledge of one’s own self is sometimes unavailable; instead, the self vanishes beyond the ever-receding horizon of an impossible standard of sincerity, or disappears before the searching gaze of an imagined all-knowing Other forced by implacable theological logic into an existential and epistemological crisis. Herbert’s poetry is therefore a reasoned dialogue with the self—a theology of evolving perspectives that represents the poet’s capacity to advance towards and then retreat from mistaken ideas or perspectives on experience. In this dissertation I will trace how Herbert worked to establish a notion of the self in relation to Christian narratives that are fraught through and through with anxiety about our separation from divine presence. I will also show how both his religious and secular verse can and should be viewed not as soliloquies or dramatic monologues but rather as inner dialogues within which the perspective of any given “speaker” is always subject to qualification and change

Many great authorities even in the Rambam’s lifetime, were not pleased with the Guide, because in it, the Rambam bases his philosophy on Aristotle. Nonetheless, over the generations it has been proven to be the greatest authority in philosophical thought in Judaism. In this article we are going to peruse some of the most important aspects of the Rambam’s thought. In order to organize it in a pedagogic way, we will order these areas according to the ten sefirot, beginning with the crown and ending with kingdom. 2. CROWN The highest level of the soul is called “faith.” According to the Rambam, faith in God is to believe that God has no corporeal reality and that He is not to be attributed with any form of anthropomorphism. To believe the opposite—that God does have some aspect of corporeality or human-like attributes is considered heresy. True faith and necessary faith When the Rambam speaks of faith, he differentiates between two types of faith.

The method of the study is systematic analysis, which focuses on ascertaining the commonalities, characteristics and possible inconsistencies in Kasper’s thought. The sources for this study consist of works pertinent to the subject in the corpus of Kasper’s writings from 1965 to 2015. In order to offer a full account of Kasper’s understanding of revelation, this study analyses the philosophical and theological background of his thought. The present study outlines and discusses Kasper’s interpretation of the doctrine of revelation, his understanding of how the Bible should be interpreted and his dogmatic method. This study also discusses Kasper’s understanding of the meaning of revelation in the modern era. In line with previous studies of Kasper’s theology also this study concludes that the three influences that have most affected Kasper’s thought are: German idealist philosophy, the Tübingen School and the Second Vatican Council. This study argues that Kasper’s conception of revelation is dynamic and dialogical. With the help of the concepts of German idealist philosophy, especially that of F.W.J Schelling, Kasper sketches a model of revelation theology based on the idea that, precisely because the human being is finite, he is able to conceive that there must lie an infinite ground that is the ground of being of all reality.

The theology of such a denomination is practiced organically by the people and is seldom articulated by the academy. Thus one cannot find a well articulated theological understanding of what ordination means for the individual and the community in the Baptist context. A synthesis of Geertz’s thick description, Lindbeck’s approach to doctrine, and McClendon’s understandings of speech-acts and conviction will offer a methodology through which one can articulate a theology of ordination. In doing so, we will find that the “call” and a relationship with a congregation are essential for ordination to occur. Such a theology will suggest that one is changed through ordination, and this change is relational in nature. The Catholic concept of Sacramental Consciousness offers a way to articulate the community’s awareness of the pastor’s relational change while at the same time maintaining the egalitarian nature of a Baptist community.

If you face the West front, look to the right hand side of the main door. The statue of George Herbert is looking South to the left hand side of the smaller door. To attempt a detailed description of Salisbury Cathedral, one of the finest Gothic Cathedrals in Europe is beyond the scope of this walk but before starting the walk, you may wish to admire the interior of the Cathedral and see the stained glass window illustrating George Herbert’s poem ‘Love- George Herbert Statue Joy’ with vines illustrated in all three panels. The window is at the East end of the North Aisle beyond the choir. George Herbert is shown praying in the bottom left panel. Unfortunately the window is partly obscured by an undistinguished monument. George Herbert Window Returning to the West front of the Cathedral, we turn North and walk towards the High Street gate admiring the fine buildings of the Cathedral Close. Mompesson House of 1701 is open to the public and faces a green to our left as we proceed towards the High Street. As we go through the gate we can see, straight ahead of us, St Thomas’ church built for the builders of the Cathedral to worship in. The same existential concern for spiritual freedom is at the heart of both theology and philosophy. From the point of view of existential philosophy as Berdyaev understands it, only a theologically informed account of freedom, could do justice to the concept of freedom. But a freedom determined by God is not what Berdyaev had in mind as representing authentic freedom. It was necessary for him to reinterpret Jakob Boehme’s concept of Ungrund to arrive at a notion of uncreated freedom that both God and man share. But the articulation of this freedom, and an account of it within our fallen world could only be done as a philosophical pursuit. To arrive at the authentic understanding of spiritual freedom, that is theologically informed, Berdyaev believes that a philosophical rejection of erroneous views of freedom should take place. The articulation of the notion of freedom that does justice to the complexity of the existential situation of both God and man is not for Berdyaev a purpose in itself. Being born into an artistic and wealthy family, he received a good education that led to his holding prominent positions at Cambridge University and Parliament. He went to college with the intention of becoming a priest, but his scholarship attracted the attention of King James I/VI. Herbert served in Parliament for two years. In 1630, in his late thirties he gave up his secular ambitions and took holy orders in the Church of England, spending the rest of his life as a rector of the little parish of Fugglestone St Peter with Bemerton St Andrew, near Salisbury. He was noted for unfailing care for his parishioners, bringing the sacraments to them when they were ill, and providing food and clothing for those in need. Henry Vaughan said of him "a most glorious saint and seer". Augustine wrote hundreds of theological works, Thomas Aquinas wrote the Summa Theologiae, John Calvin wrote the Institutes and Barth wrote thirteen volumes of Church Dogmatics. Theologians have never been at a loss for words, but there are many who question the efficacy and ability of language to communicate truth about a God who is known as the Transcendent and Powerful Creator God. For hundreds of years, Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite2 was thought to be the forerunner of a new way of thinking about the way theologians and philosophers talk about God: the use of the apophatic or negative move in theology. While the Dionysian apophatic is seen in many places throughout his corpus, it is found most clearly in The Mystical Theology. Apophaticism is a way in which one works within the confines of language to describe God; however, at some point, the effectiveness of language begins to break down, and one must step outside of language and learned knowledge to come into the presence of God.

George Herbert, the subject through which we meditate upon the holy Word this evening, is now remembered better for his relationship to God than for his actions as a Trinity Fellow. You will then forgive me for prefacing what I have to say with a brief reminder of Herbert’s Trinity career. Herbert was admitted to Trinity as an undergraduate in 1609, a month after his sixteenth birthday. An apt student,he received his B.A. in 1613, ranking 2nd of the 193 undergraduates in his year. Elected a minor Fellow in 1614, Herbert spent the next decade at Trinity, for the last four of which he was University Orator. He left Cambridge in 1624, aged thirty, and died nine years later. On his death he was incumbent of the parish of Fugglestone-with- Bemerton, in the diocese of Salisbury, a position he held for three years. In his lifetime he was remembered (by Francis Bacon) for his Latin verse, written mostly in response to controversy, as one in whom ‘Divinitie, and Poesie met’ and for his civic prose achievements, also in Latin, as an ‘esteemed Master of the Roman eloquence’. Both at Cambridge and later, Herbert wrote devotional poems in English. Few, if any, of his contemporaries will have read them; at any rate there is no evidence of their circulation. He might have sent a couple of sonnets to his mother, and we know of one other exchange of poems with a contemporary.

Though it has a certain value, the tripartite scheme of Christ’s office that presents Him as High Priest, Prophet and King does not exhaust the description of Jesus’ ministry and identity. This thesis looks at the three offices of Christ from an Orthodox perspective, and includes a history and critique of modern Orthodox authors concerning the threefold office. The need for the given thesis is based on the absence of research done by Orthodox thinkers on the doctrine of the Three Offices of Christ and its place in Orthodox theology. Only a few Orthodox dogmatists have written on the said doctrine. They can be separated into two groups: the one attempting to make a unique interpretation of the concept of the threefold ministry of Christ in line with Eastern patristic theology, while the other has been influenced by Western theological approaches to the doctrine.

O'Connell During the summer of 194 l, having fini shed his fust year teaching English at St. Bonaventure College, Thomas Merton was busy about many things: he was working on his novel, Journal of My Escape from the Nazis, writing numerous poems, keeping two versions of his journal. reading Dante, Lorca and Graham Greene, teaching a summer school bibliography course, spending two weeks working at Catherine de Hueck's Friendship House in Harlem, worrying about the war, thinking about the Trappists. 1 In the midst of all this activity he also managed Lo find time for another project, one that reflected his own deepening interest, as writer and reader, in religious verse. On July 27, he records in his journal: I think of making an Anthology of Poems, Religious or nearly Religious. So far I have got Donne's "Hymn to Christ at the Author"s Last Going into Gennany," "At the Round Earth's Imagin'd Comers," ·'Nocturnal on Saint Lucy's Day," "'What If This Present were the World 's Last Night?," and Herbert's "Aaron" and Vaughan's "The Seed Growing Secretly" and Hopkins' "Felix Randal." Also Tthink Hopkins' "Leaden and Golden Echo" - "Bugler's First Communion,.. "Candle indoors."' "Wreck of the Deutschlancf' and despair poems. Then Blake's ·'How Sweet I Roamed," "Lillie Girl Lost.'' "Auguries of Innocence." '·Mental Traveler." ''Holy Thursday" (Innocence), a lot more Vaughan (e.g., "Night"). plenty Traherne - Southwell's " Burning Babe."' ln all maybe 150 poems - or half that- 75 would be a better number (RM 380-8 1).
