My method usually begins with abstract mark making, either in PRICE: my sketch book or painting directly on to the canvas. Rather than making purely premeditated compositions, I seek images and ideas that are intuitively generated from abstraction. I’ve developed an energetic, explorative and risk-taking way to create which is fast, VENUE: Down Arts Centre fun and free. I am excited by spontaneity during the painting process. I mainly use acrylic paints as this medium dries rapidly ARTIST: and can be used with acrylic gel medium for collage, built up Simon Bradley in layers or scraped away when wet and rubbed off with water. Occasionally I later use isopropyl alcohol to reveal surprises and aspects that previously dried under layers. I enjoy the interplay of abstraction and realism to communicate a story or idea. By using expressively charged brush strokes, colour, tone and texture I allow the painting to flow and lead the way to the finished composition. Located in the eighteenth century Gaol of Down, Down County Museum, collects, conserves and displays objects, images and documents relating to the history of County Down. The Old Gaol of Down was opened in 1796 and until its closure in 1830 held hundreds of prisoners, incarcerated for a variety of offences from the minor to the most serious crimes. The gaol was also a convict gaol with approximately 400 prisoners transported to the penal colony of New South Wales. Today, visitors can see the restored gaol buildings including some of the cells where prisoners were kept. A selection of the museum’s collection of historic objects is displayed in our permanent galleries.

Exhibitions

In addition to the three main galleries, there are two temporary exhibition galleries, which have a vibrant programme of exhibitions.

Gallery 1

Displays tell the story of Newry and Mourne from the prehistoric period up to the 16th century. Artefacts on display include a grave slab from a pre-Norman monastic foundation in the area and a stone carved with a human head and a heraldic animal from the medieval Cistercian abbey at Newry. New highlights will include a range of artefacts such as pottery from the Neolithic to post medieval period, excavated in 2011 at Carnbane, near Newry.

Gallery 2

The commercial and cultural heritage of Newry and Mourne in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries is explored. New highlights will include a late 16th century portrait of Sir Nicholas Bagenal, who developed the Carlingford Peninsula in the second half of the 16th century. He also played an important role in the political events of the period, and was Marshal of the Army in Ireland.

Gallery 3

An eclectic range of artefacts is used to trace the impact of political, economic and cultural events on Newry in the 20th century. A section of the gallery is also devoted to the farming, fishing and domestic life of the area. New highlights include paintings by Newry-born artist, Margaret Clarke, one of the most significant figures in the history of early 20th century Irish art. An accomplished portrait painter, Margaret also ran her husband, Harry Clarke’s stain glass studios in Dublin after his death in 1931. www.newryandmournemuseum.com Newry and Mourne Museum Programme January – April 2020

Post-War Fashion – Dresses belonging to Margaret Reside

In 1947 Margaret Reside married Major Gerald Reside, an architect in Newry, and for this occasion, she wore a purple wool crepe dress which is an example of a wartime economy dress. Accompanying this will be a 1960’s day dress probably worn at home and at informal social occasions.

As one of the first women solicitors in the United Kingdom, Margaret Reside’s legal career will also be briefly explored as part of this display.
