Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69
Analysis of Talk Shows Between Obama and Trump Administrations by Jack Norcross — 69 An Analysis of the Political Affiliations and Professions of Sunday Talk Show Guests Between the Obama and Trump Administrations Jack Norcross Journalism Elon University Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements in an undergraduate senior capstone course in communications Abstract The Sunday morning talk shows have long been a platform for high-quality journalism and analysis of the week’s top political headlines. This research will compare guests between the first two years of Barack Obama’s presidency and the first two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. A quantitative content analysis of television transcripts was used to identify changes in both the political affiliations and profession of the guests who appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’s “Face the Nation,” ABC’s “This Week” and “Fox News Sunday” between the two administrations. Findings indicated that the dominant political viewpoint of guests differed by show during the Obama administration, while all shows hosted more Republicans than Democrats during the Trump administration. Furthermore, U.S. Senators and TV/Radio journalists were cumulatively the most frequent guests on the programs. I. Introduction Sunday morning political talk shows have been around since 1947, when NBC’s “Meet the Press” brought on politicians and newsmakers to be questioned by members of the press. The show’s format would evolve over the next 70 years, and give rise to fellow Sunday morning competitors including ABC’s “This Week,” CBS’s “Face the Nation” and “Fox News Sunday.” Since the mid-twentieth century, the overall media landscape significantly changed with the rise of cable news, social media and the consumption of online content. -

Black Women in Primetime Soap Opera: Examining Representation Within Genre Television
Black Women in Primetime Soap Opera: Examining Representation within Genre Television by Courtney Suggs A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Media Studies Middle Tennessee State University December 2019 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Katie Foss, Chair Dr. Sanjay Asthana Dr. Sally Ann Cruikshank ABSTRACT Using textual genre analysis, this research studied representation in primetime soap operas Scandal, How To Get Away with Murder, and Empire. Two hundred and eighty- three episodes were viewed to understand how black female identity is represented in primetime soap and how genre influences those representation. Using Collins (2009) theory of controlling images, this study found that black female protagonists were depicted as jezebels and matriarchs. The welfare mother stereotype was updated by portrayals of black woman as hard working. Soap opera conventions such as heavy talk helped provide context to stereotypical portrayals while conventions such as melodrama lead to reactive characterization. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION……………………………………………….….....1 Background……………………………………………………...………........3 CHAPTER II: LITERATURE REVIEW.....................................................................9 Black Women in Scripted Television…...........................................................9 Television Effects on Viewers……………………………………………....14 CHAPTER III: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK………………………………....18 Representation Theory……………………………………………………...18 Genre Theory……………………………………………………………….19 -
The Élan Vital of DIY Porn
Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies Vol. 11, No. 1 (March 2015) The Élan Vital of DIY Porn Shaka McGlotten In this essay, I borrow philosopher Henri Bergson’s concept élan vital, which is translated as vital force or vital impetus, to describe the generative potential evident in new Do-It- Yourself (DIY) pornographic artifacts and to resist the trend to view porn as dead or dead- ening. Bergson employed this idea to challenge the mechanistic view of matter held by the biological sciences of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, a view that considered the stuff of life to be reducible to brute or inert matter. Bergson argued, rather, that matter, insofar as it undergoes continuous change, is itself alive and not because of an immaterial, animat- ing principle, but because this liveliness is intrinsic to matter itself. I use Bergson’s élan vi- tal to think through the liveliness of gay DIY porn and for its contribution to a visual his- tory of desire, for the ways it changes the relationships between consumers and producers of pornography, and the ways it realizes new ways of stretching the pornographic imagination aesthetically and politically. It’s Alive I jump between sites. I watch a racially ambiguous young man with thick, muscular legs standing in front of a nondescript bathtub. He whispers, “I’m so horny right now,” rub- bing his cock beneath red Diesel boxer briefs. He turns and pulls his underwear down, arching his back to reveal a hairy butt. Turning to the camera again he shows off his modestly equipped, but very hard, dick. -
Billy Bush Says There Were 8 Witnesses to Trump's 'Access Hollywood'
The Washington Post Morning Mix Billy Bush says there were 8 witnesses to Trump’s ‘Access Hollywood’ comments By Derek Hawkins December 4 Billy Bush, the former “Access Hollywood” host, has responded to recent reports that President Trump has questioned the authenticity of video in which he can be heard bragging about grabbing women by their genitalia, saying the president was “indulging in some revisionist history.” Bush said that seven people, in addition to him, heard Trump. In a commentary Sunday for the New York Times, Bush said he was disturbed by reports from the past week that Trump has told allies and at least one senator that he may not be the voice on the 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape. “He said it,” Bush wrote, referring to Trump’s now infamous “grab them by the p‑‑‑y” remark made on an “Access Hollywood” bus. “Of course he said it,” Bush added. “And we laughed along, without a single doubt that this was hypothetical hot air from America’s highest-rated bloviator. Along with Donald Trump and me, there were seven other guys present on the bus at the time, and every single one of us assumed we were listening to a crass standup act. He was performing. Surely we thought, none of this was real.” “We now know better,” he added, referring to the women who came forward to accuse Trump of improper sexual advances. The Washington Post first reported the leaked recording in October 2016. It captured audio of then-candidate Trump boasting to Bush about forcibly kissing, groping and trying to have sex with women as the two rode to a soap opera set to shoot a segment. -

In Between Spectacle and Political Correctness: Vamos Con Todo – an Ambivalent News/Talk Show1
Pragmatics 23:1.117-145 (2013) International Pragmatics Association DOI: 10.1075/prag.23.1.06pla IN BETWEEN SPECTACLE AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS: VAMOS CON TODO – AN AMBIVALENT NEWS/TALK SHOW1 María Elena Placencia and Catalina Fuentes Rodríguez Abstract Vamos con todo is a mixed-genre entertainment programme transmitted in Ecuador on a national television channel. The segment of the programme that we examine in this paper focuses on gossip and events surrounding local/national celebrities. Talk as entertainment is central to this segment which is structured around a series of ‘news’ stories announced by the presenters and mostly conveyed through (pre-recorded) interviews. Extracts of these interviews are ingeniously presented to create a sense of confrontation between the celebrities concerned. Each news story is then followed-up by informal ‘discussions’ among the show’s 5-6 presenters who take on the role of panellists. While Vamos con todo incorporates various genres, the running thread throughout the programme is the creation of scandal and the instigation of confrontation. What is of particular interest, however, is that no sooner the scandalous stories are presented, the programme presenters attempt to defuse the scandal and controversy that they contributed to creating. The programme thus results in what viewers familiar with the genre of confrontational talk shows in Spain, for example, may regard as an emasculated equivalent. In this paper we explore linguistic and other mechanisms through which confrontation and scandal are first created and then defused in Vamos con todo. We consider the situational, cultural and socio-political context of the programme as possibly playing a part in this disjointedness. -
