THIS WEEK,,, WE LIGHT THE “ ROSE COLORED CANDLE ” AND THE CELEBRANT WEARS A “ ROSE COLORED CHAUSABLE ” WHICH SYMBOLIZES JOY. AS WE CELEBRATE THIS “ JOYOUS TIME ”,,, LET ME REMIND EVERYONE,,, THAT CHRISTMAS,,, THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST,,, IS ONLY TWO WEEKS,,, AWAY AND WE ARE ABOUT TO RECEIVE THE GREATEST GIFT THAT GOD HAS EVER GIVEN TO US,,, HIS ONLY BELOVED SON,,, OUR LORD,,, JESUS CHRIST! PAUL’S NOT ONLY CONVINCED,,, BUT IS ENCOURAGING ALL BELIEVERS,,, THAT THE : “ GOD OF PEACE ”,,, WILL MAKE YOU PERFECTLY HOLY; IN SPIRIT,,, SOUL,,, AND BODY ,,, AND HE WILL PRESERVE YOU,,, TOTALLY BLAMELESS,,, AT THAT AWESOME AND GLORIOUS SECOND COMING,,, OF CHRIST JESUS ! PAUL LATER WROTE,,, IN “ EPHESIANS (1: 4) ”,,, THAT BELIEVERS WERE CHOSEN IN CHRIST BEFORE CREATION “TO BE HOLY AND BLAMELESS ”. THAT IS THE SPIRITUAL STATE OF EVERY COMITTED BELIEVERS SPIRIT AND SOUL ,,, BY GOD’S GRACE IN JESUS CHRIST . AS FOR YOUR BODY,,, ( 1 CORINTHIANS 3:16 ) TELLS US PLAINLY; “DON’T YOU KNOW,,, THAT YOU YOURSELVES ARE GOD’S TEMPLE AND THAT GOD’S SPIRIT DWELLS IN YOUR MIDST?” AND AGAIN IN ( 1 CORINTHIANS 6: 19-20 ) “DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT YOUR BODIES ARE TEMPLES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT,,, WHO IS IN YOU,,, WHOM YOU HAVE RECEIVED FROM GOD? YOU ARE NOT YOUR OWN,,, YOU WERE BOUGHT AT A PRICE. THEREFORE,,, HONOR GOD AND YOUR BODIES.” ST. PAUL IS ASSURING US,,, AS BELIEVERS IN CHRIST,,, WHO SIN,,, CONFESS THEIR SIN,,, AND WHO CONTINUE TO SPIRITUALLY GROW,,, IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT,,, THAT WE ARE SPIRITUALLY PROTECTED,,, HOLY AND BLAMELESS,,, IN BODY,,, SPIRIT,,, AND SOUL ,,, BY THE GRACE AND GIFT OF GOD ,,, UNTIL THE DAY JESUS COMES AGAIN! WHAT A WONDERFUL GIFT OF MERCY AND GRACE THAT WE ARE TO MEDITATE ON,,, DURING THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON. BUT,,, UNTIL JESUS RETURNS,,, THE ADVENT HOMILIES ARE MEANT TO ENCOURAGE US,,, TO REMAIN ALERT,,, TO STAY AWAKE,,, AND TO REMAIN WATCHFUL! THE LORD KNOWS OUR WEAKNESSES AND HOW WE STRUGGLE WITH TEMPTATION. HE KNOWS THE PROBLEMS OF OUR LIVES AND HE KNOWS,,, VERY WELL,,, THE TRIALS IN OUR SPIRITUAL LIVES,,, WHICH WE SEEM UNABLE TO OVERCOME. THIS TIME OF WAITING,,, BEFORE THE RETURN OF JESUS IS A SPIRITUAL BATTLE WITH SIN ,,, BUT PAUL SAYS,,, THAT THE “ WILL OF GOD ” IN CHRIST JESUS,,, WILL GIVE US THE STRENGTH NEEDED TO OVERCOME ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PAUL TELLS US TO REJOICE ALWAYS,,, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING ,,, IN ALL CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE THANKS,,, DO NOT QUENCH THE SPIRIT,,, DO NOT DISPISE PROPHETIC UTTERENCES,,, OR THE WORD OF GOD. TEST EVERYTHING YOU HEAR,,, RETAIN WHAT IS GOOD,,, AND REFRAIN FROM EVIL. NOW,,, YOU MAY BE THINKING; THESE AREN’T CHRISTMAS GIFTS . IT SEEMS MORE LIKE A “ TO DO ” LIST! NOT AT ALL! SCRIPTURE IS TELLING US: “LOOK AT WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN TO YOU,,, IN JESUS . IT’S THE JOY,,, OF A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS ! THIS IS THE CHRISTMAS SEASON AND AS WE OPEN OUR GIFTS OF PRAYER AND THANKSGIVING ,,, WHEN WE HEAR HIS WORD AND USE IT IN OUR DAILY LIVES ,,, AND WHEN WE REFRAIN FROM EVIL ,,, WE ARE USING THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS FROM GOD,,, THAT BUILD UP OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND SANCTIFICATION,,, WHILE WE WAIT FOR THE COMING OF JESUS! THESE ARE TOOLS,,, THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT USES,,, TO GUIDE OUR LIVES IN HOLINESS,,, BECAUSE,,, ALONE,,, WE CAN NOT LIVE IN HOLINESS AND RIGHTEOUSNESS,,, WITHOUT THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! BROTHERS AND SISTERS,,, WE NEED TO OPEN THESE SPECIAL GIFTS,,, WHENEVER,,, WHEREVER AND FOR,,, WHATEVER WE NEED,,, BY ASKING IN SHORT TALKS; (*) HOW DO I HANDLE THIS PROBLEM,,, LORD? (*) WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT THIS,,, OR,,, THAT? YOU SEE,,, THESE SHORT CONVERSATIONS WITH JESUS,,, THROUGH OUR LIVES,,, ARE GOD’S SPECIAL GIFTS TO US! BE A THANKFUL BELIEVER,,, WHETHER YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE TRAPPED IN SOME KIND OF PRISION,,, LIKE PAUL OR WHEN YOU’RE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF ,,, OR WHEN YOU’RE BEING MADE FUN OF,,, BECAUSE OF YOUR FAITH ,,, OR WHEN YOU’RE FACING ANY OTHER KIND OF DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCE . CHRIST JESUS WILL BRING VICTORY AND PEACE,,, OVER THE POWER OF SIN AND CIRCUMSTANCES IN OUR LIVES BY FAITH AND TRUST! IT’S OUR CHOICE ,,, TO RAISE “ THINGS ” UP TO THE LORD IN PRAYER,,, OR NOT ,,, AND IT’S OUR CHOICE ,,, TO BE A THANKFUL BELIEVER,,, OR,,, TO COMPLAIN! BUT WHEN WE CHOOSE TO USE GOD’S GIFTS,,, JESUS PROMISED IN SCRIPTURE THAT HE WILL BLESS US WITH HIS PEACE,,, A PEACE,,, THAT SURPASSES ALL UNDERSTANDING AND THAT THE WORLD CAN’T GIVE ! GOD’S OTHER GIFTS CONTINUE TO ADD TO OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH. THEY ARE; “DO NOT QUENCH THE SPIRIT,,, DO NOT DESPISE PROPHETIC UTTERENCES,,, OR THE WORD OF GOD. TEST EVERYTHING YOU HEAR,,, RETAIN WHAT IS GOOD AND REFRAIN FROM EVIL.” JESUS PROMISED TO SEND THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE US INTO ALL TRUTH AND THE MEANS,,, BY WHICH THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES THAT,,, IS BY HEARING THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL,,, AND THEN,,, WHEN EACH ONE OF YOU,,, AS BELIEVERS,,, READS AND STUDIES THE SCRIPTURES YOURSELVES. BROTHERS AND SISTERS,,,THE BIBLE IS VERY CLEAR,,, THAT IN THE TIME BEFORE JESUS RETURNS,,, THERE WILL BE MANY FALSE PROPHETS AND TEACHERS ,,, WHO WILL RISE UP,,, EVEN FROM WITHIN THE CHURCH ,,, WHO WILL; “ TICKLE THEIR EARS ”,,, (2 TIMOTHY 4:3) BY TELLING THEM; “ WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR !” IF WE BELIEVERS DON’T STUDY SCRIPTURE AND ALLOW THE HOLY SPIRIT TO “ TEACH US THE TRUTH ”,,, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO “ TEST ” ALL THINGS,,, HOLD ON TO THE GOOD AND AVOID EVERY KIND OF EVIL! BROTHERS AND SISTERS,,, IF YOU DON’T HAVE A SOLID FOUNDATION OF THE TRUTH OF GOD’S WORD,,, IN WHICH TO PUT OUR TRUST AND IN WHICH THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN GUIDE US,,, THEN,,, WE’LL LOSE THE ABILITY TO DETERMINE WHAT EXACTLY IS GOD’S TRUTH! THOSE WHO HAVE DEVELOPED NO FOUNDATION ,,, TEND TO TOWARDS TO THE DEVIL. THEY BEGIN TO BELIEVE SOME OF THOSE “ FALSE PROPHETS ”,,, AND SATAN’S LIES,,, AS SCRIPTURE SAYS,,, WOULD HAPPEN! SO,,, WHY NOT READ ONE OF THE GOSPELS,,, THE BOOK OF ROMAN’S,,, OR THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES,,, WHERE YOU WILL SEE,,, THE EARLY CHURCH IN ACTION AND AS YOU SEE THIS ACTION,,, YOU WILL COME TO KNOW MORE COMPLETELY,,, THE LOVE,,, GRACE ,,, PEACE AND CONFIDENCE OF FAITH,,, IN JESUS CHRIST,,, THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD,,, WILL GIVE YOU. THESE GIFTS,,, FROM GOD THE FATHER,,, THROUGH CHRIST JESUS,,, ARE SPIRITUAL TOOLS,,, PRAYER,,, THANKSGIVING IN ALL THINGS,,, THE WORD,,, GIVEN BY THE HOLY SPIRIT,,,DISCERNMENT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT AND VICTORY OVER TEMPTATION. LET’S BE BOLD IN PRAYER,,, JOYFUL IN THANKSGIVING EVEN WHEN WE DON’T THINK THAT WE HAVE ANYTHING TO BE THANKFUL FOR. THESE GIFTS,,, THAT WE RECEIVE FROM THE LORD,,, FILL OUR HEARTS WITH HIS PEACE AND CONFIDENCE OF FAITH.     First Corinthians 1 Corinthians 3:1-4:21: Paul and Apollos: The Meaning of “Apostle” Paul was the founder of the Corinthian church, and Apollos apparently followed him as a leader of the church not long after. While the author of the Book of Acts undoubtedly told the story of the early church with his own biases, it seems reasonable to suppose that his description of Apollos is trustworthy. “Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.” (Acts 18:24-25) We saw in reading 1 Corinthians 1 that the Corinthians were divided into groups based in part on the leader each group claimed for its own: “I belong to Paul. I belong to Apollos.” Others say “I belong to Cephas (Peter)” and some even apparently say, “I belong to Jesus.” It is unclear why exactly the Cephas party and the Jesus party (if there was one) differed from the Paul party, but we can make some guesses about those who followed Apollos. If Acts is right that Apollos was an “eloquent man” it seems quite possible that the Corinthians contrasted him with Paul, who preceded him.     SUNDAY, JUNE 3, 2018 PASTOR SCOTT GALLATIN “MAGNIFY JESUS, RATHER THAN HIS SERVANTS” 1 Corinthians 3:4-11 INT RODUCTION We seem to have a natural tendency towards tribalism, with things such as sports teams, phones, and so on…you name it! There is a carnal, immature bent to exalt one over another. The church members in Corinth did this with regards to Paul, Apollos, and even Peter. Unfortunately, their personal preferences turned into arguments! MINISTERS You have to admire Paul’s attitude. He’s not jealous, he’s not competing with Apollos and he’s not exalting himself either. We can get this wrong in 2 ways: 1) We can disrespect the calling of Pastor and be flippant about it. 2) We may turn someone into a celebrity, and nurture the cult of personality. The danger is, the Bible warns against flattery! “And a flattering mouth works ruin.” Proverbs 26:28. “A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet.” Proverbs 29:5. Paul and Barnabas had experienced flattery first hand in Lystra in Acts 14. They were thought to be the false gods, Mercury and Jupiter (otherwise known as Hermes and Zeus) and for a short time became objects of worship. VARIETY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST There are many church denominations, but the Bible actually allows for different opinions and convictions (with similar core values). There are some non-negotiable essentials to be a Christian: one God (the Trinity); Jesus (God -Man); the Gospel, salvation by grace through faith; Jesus born of a virgin; the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus; etc.

One of the problems was that it had groups of church members lining up behind different church leaders and declaring that their leader was better than the other leaders. In the passage set for today, the Apostle Paul addresses the people first and then the leaders in an attempt to rid the church of these divisions. Firstly Paul addresses the people. Don’t form factions because they rob the church of Christ’s blessings. Read 1 Corinthians 3:18-21 Let no one deceive himself. If any one among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” 21 So let no one boast of men. For all things are yours, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future, all are yours; 23 and you are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s. We have come to expect unhealthy competitiveness in the world. Leaders in the world and their parties are constantly seeking power for their advantage. Their methods of gaining power and exercising power are “worldly wise” ways of operating. Rather, as Paul has already argued in this letter, God has given all his church leaders for the benefit of all the church.

The nature of this text as a very limited caveat in Paul’s argument will be contrasted with most other readings throughout its history of interpretation. The latter take the seemingly comforting tone of v 15b (“will be saved”) to be theologically primary, rather than the tone of warning (“each builder must choose with care how to build,” v 10b). The paper will contend, instead, that 1 Cor 3:15b functions as an afterthought in Paul’s immediate argument (3:5-17).

    JETS 56/2 (2013) 325–35 APOSTLE APOLLOS? ANDREW WILSON* Did Paul see Apollos as a fellow apostle in 1 Corinthians? Surprisingly, this question has not received a full-length scholarly treatment, despite its relatively significant implications for our understanding of the apostolate. Amongst com- mentators on 1 Corinthians, it is frequently argued or assumed that he did, as we shall see, based on the flow and logic of chapters 1–4. Many evangelicals, on the other hand, have reasoned that since Apollos had not seen the risen Christ, and since Paul believed that an essential qualification for apostleship was to have seen the risen Christ, Paul could not have regarded Apollos as an apostle.1 Under the surface of this discussion is another concern for conservative scholars: if someone who had not seen the risen Christ could be termed an apostle by Paul, then what implications would that have for the completion of the aposto- late, and thereby the completion of the canon of Scripture? Would more apostles be possible after the first generation had died out? More books of the Bible, even? One unfortunate consequence of this is that Paul’s argument in 1 Corinthians 1–4, which has nothing to do with the canon of Scripture, has not always been read on its own terms, particularly with reference to the position of Apollos. In this paper, we will review the main interpretive approaches, and then attempt to answer the question through a careful study of the evidence in 1 Corinthians. We will close by suggesting some possible implications.

While life is difficult and filled with many trials, there are also numerous blessings that come our way. One such blessing is babies. Living Hope is expecting several. 1. Beth and I were blessed with 3 children and we adopted a 4th child. They have each brought us a tremendous amount of joy. More children would have been a blessing. 2. Grandchildren are even more precious. To watch your kids, whom you managed by the grace of God to not mess up too badly, parent wisely is serious joy. 3. A 6-month old baby is cuddly, cute and sweet. A 16, or 18, or 21 year old baby is not. We parent by faith. Hoping, praying and teaching our children to grow up. It is expected. B. When a person comes to Jesus Christ, they are infants in Christ. God expects new believers in Jesus Christ to grow up to maturity. 1. A mature Christian (holy) is a fierce weapon in God’s hands. An immature Christian is not. C. In this chapter, Paul shines his spotlight on the Corinthians. They probably didn’t ask, because they thought they were mature, but Paul sees them differently. 1. The title of this sermon is The 7 Habits of Highly Immature Believers. A tip of my hat to Stephen Covey and his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. 2. It is always good to remember that Scripture is God-breathed.
