Debating Month at ACS On Tuesday 20th June, our Year 9/10 and Year 7/8 debating teams participated in a Debating Gala Day at our school. The day involved students from Griffith High School, West Wyalong High School, Temora High School and our teams.

The Year 9/10 team, consisting of Ben Weston, Leila Verney, Amy Crighton, Hannah Scarlett and Jordan, had two tough debates against Griffith High and West Wyalong High. In a tightly contested debate our team was successful against Griffith and lost against West Wyalong. Overall West Wyalong were the victors of our Zone after an impressive two wins on the day. I would like to congratulate the team on their efforts and thank them for their assistance this year and especially during the Gala day.

The Year 7/8 team of Mae Lucas, Alice Doyle, Jo Bray and Jack continued to develop their debating skills and proved once again their courage and determination. They debated the Temora A and B teams on the day. Un- fortunately they did lose both debates but the Adjudicators commented on their growth in developing and delivering strong arguments and felt that their second debate was extremely close and could have gone either way. The other team managers and Adjudicators also commented on the resilience of the team and were extremely impressed by these students. A special mention goes to Mae Lucas’ leadership of this group and the way in which she has mentored these students.

Two other debates were held between Griffith Year 7 and Year 8 and West Wyalong Year 7 & 8 teams. I would like to thank the other Team Managers, Ms Libby Ridgway and Ms Michelle Groth for their assistance on the day and especially Ms Frances Dwyer for her catering, the Adjudicators, Debbie Worland, Leah Harper and Lyndall Taprell. The Ardlethan 5/6 Debating team were also excellent in their roles as ‘Chairpeople’, timers etc. A special thanks goes to all of the debating students on the day, who were wonderful participants and allowed the audience to see their wonderful debating skills.

Debating Month at ACS cont.

On Tuesday 27th June, the Year 5 & 6 Debating team, consisting of Emily Scarlett, Jessica Hellings, Charlie Crighton and Summah Menzies travelled to Ladysmith Public School to undertake two of their ‘round robyn’ debates. The first debate saw them up against Adelong Public School to debate the topic ’That we should ban all animal racing’. Our students won this debate as the negative side and were very convincing in their arguments.

The second debate was against Ladysmith Public School on the topic, ‘That we should force TV channels to show equal amounts of men’s and women’s sport’. Our side were the affirmative and whilst they presented some very valid arguments, the debate was awarded against them.

The students performed very well and were a credit to their school.

The 5 & 6 team, still have one debate to complete their Zone competition, which will be held next term via Video Conferencing against Public School. Helen Bray
