Although most travertine deposits form a cement-like layer on stream sub- strates, mineral deposits can also form on benthic invertebrates. -

Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. Rhithrogena fiorii Grandi, 1953 and R. adrianae sp. n. by Carlo BELFIORE (Roma) ABSTRACT Rhithrogena adrianae, a new species related to R. diaphana Nav., is described from nymphs and male imagines collected in Central Italy. Taxonomic characters of nymphs and males of R. fiorii Grandi, whose nymphal stage was previously unknown, are also described and figured. Lectotype is designated for R. fiorii. The taxonomic status of Rhithrogena fiorii Grandi, 1953, described from winged stages only, was till now very uncertain. The type locality, near Bologna, is now altered by buildings and factories: R. fiorii has probably disappeared from that site. I have examined in Grandi's collection the specimens referred by her to R. fiorii, labelled: "Bologna, S. Luca, 16.III.1952 (l >, l < subim.), 20.III.1954 (l <, l > subim, l < subim.), 20.11.1955 (1 > subim.), 17.III.1955 (l <), .IV. 1955 (l >).I designate lectotype the male imago collected on 16.III. 1952. None of the spe- cimens is in a good state of preservation. Titillators are not truncate (Grandi, 1960: fig. 21,6 and pag. 91), but with few pointed lobes at the apex. During the first months of 1980 and 1981, in the river Mignone, near Rome, I collected and reared a hundred nymphs of Rhithrogena, from which I obtained some subimagines and two male imagines, easily referable to R. fiorii. I describe herein the taxonomic features of nymphs and males of this species. I also describe the male imago and nymph of a new species of Rhithrogena which lives in the same localities as R. -

GONSER3 'Department of Entomology, St. Petersburg State University, St. Petersburg 199034, Ru ssia 2Department of Entomology, Institute of Zoology, Perolles, CH-1700 Fribourg, Switzerland 3Limnological Research Center, EA WAG, CH-6047 Kastani enbaum, Switzerland The superfamily Siphonuroidea is proposed, its phylogenetic position discussed and definitive char acteristics are presented for all the families contained. New characters of the thorax, the female gen italia, and the egg chorion are used. The Siphlonuroidea consist of a Northern Hemisphere group of families (Siphlonuridae s. str., Dipteromimidae, Ameletidae, Metretopodidae, Acanthametropodidae and Ametropodidae) and a Southern Hemisphere group of families (Oniscigastridae, Nesameletidae, Rallidentidae, and Ameletopsidae). The family Dipteromimidae and the subfamily Parameletinae are established. The synonymy of lsonychia polita and Acanthametropus nikolskyi is documented. Fossil Siphlonuroidea of uncertain family status are included. The rel ation ships between the families are di s cussed. Key words: eggs. INTRODUCTION The taxonomy and the phylogeny of Siphlonuroidea or Siphlonuridae sensu Lato are subject to different opinions. The authors that have worked on the rank and composition of this taxon (EDMUNDS, 1972; MCCAFFERTY & EDMUNDS, 1979; LANDA & SOLDAN, 1985; M CCAFFERTY, 1991; TOMKA & ELPERS, 1991; KLUGE, in press, and others) have used the taxon Siphlonuridae in different senses. These dif ferences are based on (1) the importance attached to adult versus larval characters, (2) the interpretation of characters as being synapomorphic or symplesiomorphic, (3) the paraphyletic nature of the group, and ( 4) inadequate diagnoses of many tax a. -

The purpose of this application, under Articles 75.6 and 81 of the Code, is to conserve the prevailing usage of the generic name Ecdyonurus Eaton, 1868 and the specific name Ecdyonurus venosus (Fabricius, 1775), by setting aside the existing name-bearing type of Ecdyonurus venosus and designating a neotype. The existing name-bearing type of E. venosus, type species of Ecdyonurus Eaton, 1868, is not in accord with the current use of the name Ecdyonurus venosus sensu auct. Ephemera venosa Fabricius, 1775 is the type species of the mayfly genus Ecdyonurus Eaton, 1868, family HEPTAGENIIDAE, by original designation. Since Kimmins’s (1942) redescription of Ecdyonurus venosus subsequent authors have universally used the name Ecdyonurus venosus (Fabricius, 1775) in this sense in hundreds of scientific papers. 2. Fabricius (1775, p. 304) briefly described the species Ephemera venosa (in the imaginal stage), indicating as the type locality the habitat of Ephemera venosa: ‘Habitat in Daniae paludosis’ [= living in Danish marshlands]. 3. Although the special appearance of the eggs of the species Phyllium philippinicum, which imitate plant seeds, has received attention in different taxonomic studies, the attachment capability of the eggs remains rather anecdotical. Weherein elucidate the specialized attachment mechanism of the eggs of this species and provide the first experimental approach to systematically characterize the functional properties of their adhesion by using different microscopy techniques and attachment force measurements on substrates with differing degrees of roughness and surface chemistry, as well as repetitive attachment/detachment cycles while under the influence of water contact. We found that a combination of folded exochorionic structures (pinnae) and a film of adhesive secretion contribute to attachment, which both respond to water. Adhesion is initiated by the glue, which becomes fluid through hydration, enabling adaption to the surface profile. Hierarchically structured pinnae support the spreading of the glue and reinforcement of the film. This combination aids the egg’s surface in adapting to the surface roughness, yet the attachment strength is additionally influenced by the egg’s surface chemistry, favoring hydrophilic substrates. -

ZooKeys 607: 49–68. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.607.9391 Abstract The type specimens of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) housed at the Zoological Museum of Hamburg (ZMH) are compiled in this document. The current nomenclature of all species is given. In total, Ephemerop- tera type material of ZMH encompasses 161 species. Fifty-one holotypes and five lectotypes are present. Forty-one species are represented by syntypes, 85 by paratypes and five by paralectotypes. Material of two species (Cinygma asiaticum Ulmer, 1924 and Pseudocloeon klapaleki Müller-Liebenau, 1982) is missing. The present catalogue is an updated version of Weidner (1964a).
