12 FOCUS WINTER 2007 the Broncos’ EPIC JOURNEY It started in December 2005 with Chris Petersen’s promotion from offensive coordina- tor to head coach and ended on New Year’s Day 2007 with a stunning and astounding 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl (pictured). FOCUS looks back at the 2006 Boise State football team’s 13-0 storybook season. (John Kelly photo) FOCUS WINTER 2007 13 yes, IT REALLY HAPPENED By Bob Evancho At times, it still seems surreal — as if what we watched unfold on the evening of New Year’s Day didn’t really happen: Did we just tie the game on fourth-and-18 from the 50 with seven seconds left? Did Vinny just hit “Shoe” with that TD pass? DID IAN REALLY JUST SCORE ON A STATUE OF LIBERTY TO WIN THE GAME?! MAGIC MOMENTS Ian Johnson races to the end zone for the game-winning 2-point conversion against Oklahoma as guard Jeff Cavender (64) watches. And by now, the adjectives B to describe that win and those moments have been exhausted. Weeks later, Bronco Nation has come back down to Earth. Since Boise State’s sublime 43-42 overtime win over Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the mood of the Boise State faithful has slowly changed from unfettered exuberance to warm contentment, the kind that lasts for months.

  • Early on the Morning After Leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, Coach Les Miles Spoke Passionately About the Unique Nature of the Fighting Tigers
Early on the morning after leading LSU to the 2007 BCS National Championship, coach Les Miles spoke passionately about the unique nature of the Fighting Tigers. "They understand what being pinned down means," said Miles, who saw his team on four occasions erase fourth-quarter deficits to earn victories during its 12-2 season. "They understand what it takes to come back and fight and overcome hurdles.” When top-ranked LSU lost its ’07 regular-season finale to Arkansas, it appeared the Tigers’ chances for a national title had been extinguished. Though disappointed, LSU quickly turned its attention to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, where the Tigers – playing without starting quarterback Matt Flynn and suffering from a rash of injuries – overcame a fourth-quarter Tennessee lead to post a 21-14 victory over the Vols. Ecstatic about winning LSU’s third conference title this decade, yet frustrated about apparently falling short of a BCS title game berth, the Tigers flew home to Baton Rouge expecting to receive a Sugar Bowl invitation. However, losses that evening by Missouri and West Virginia gave LSU – which ascended to No. 2 in the BCS rankings – the cherished opportunity to meet No. 1 Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game. Before a raucous crowd of 79,651 in the Louisiana Superdome, the Tigers overcame an early 10-0 Ohio State lead with a 31-0 barrage in a 24-minute stretch to storm past the Buckeyes, 38-24. LSU, which had won its first BCS title in 2003, became the first two-time national champion in the 10-season BCS era.
