While it was disappointing to see so few CBCA members at the public talks, it was heartening to see so many new people at the Hobart session. Thank you to Jenny Dudgeon (Manager, Sustainability Learning Centre) for her hospitality. April 18 sees the announcements of this year’s Notable Books, with the Short List announcement on May 20. CBCA’s Book of the Year Awards are the premier children’s literature awards; being made a notable or short listed is a huge boost to an author/illustrator’s career. One of last year’s short listed authors, debut novelist Tamsin Janu, captivated young audiences at the Tamar Valley Writers Festival. In this thesis I will define and trace the pre-existentialism of the early pioneers and settlers, which originally emerged as a Victorian expression of their experiences in an unpredictable new environment. Then I will describe how during the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s some of their descendants modified their world-view with ideas popularly associated with French literary existentialism, including notions about the individual's freedom and responsibility to act in an unrnediated universe. -

A Survey of Recent New Zealand Writing TREVOR REEVES O achieve any depth or spread in an article attempt• ing to cover the whole gamut of New Zealand writing * must be deemed to be a New Zealand madman's dream, but I wonder if it would be so difficult for people overseas, particularly in other parts of the Commonwealth. It would appear to them, perhaps, that two or three rather good poets have emerged from these islands. So good, in fact, that their appearance in any anthology of Common• wealth poetry would make for a matter of rather pleasurable comment and would certainly not lower the general stand• ard of the book. I'll come back to these two or three poets presently, but let us first consider the question of New Zealand's prose writers. Ah yes, we have, or had, Kath• erine Mansfield, who died exactly fifty years ago. Her work is legendary — her Collected Stories (Constable) goes from reprint to reprint, and indeed, pirate printings are being shovelled off to the priting mills now that her fifty year copyright protection has run out. But Katherine Mansfield never was a "New Zealand writer" as such. She left early in the piece. But how did later writers fare, internationally speaking? It was Janet Frame who first wrote the long awaited "New Zealand Novel." Owls Do Cry was published in 1957. A rather cruel but incisive novel, about herself (everyone has one good novel in them), it centred on her own childhood experiences in Oamaru, a small town eighty miles north of Dunedin -— a town in which rough farmers drove sheep-shit-smelling American V-8 jalopies inexpertly down the main drag — where the local "bikies" as they are now called, grouped in vociferous RECENT NEW ZEALAND WRITING 17 bunches outside the corner milk bar. -

Storylines Margaret Mahy Medal Lecture 2020 Presented online 6 September 2020 Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, bula, talofa, fakalofa lahi aut, kia orana, malo e lelei. You might be looking at what I’m wearing and wondering why I’m dressed in Victorian clothes. This outfit came about when the Scholastic team, illustrator Marco Ivancic and I were thinking of ideas for the front cover of a book we were working on. Marco drew a rough of how the main character should stand but it wasn’t quite the posture we were looking for. So, I threw on a long skirt and asked my husband to take a photo of me holding a pen in my hand. Penny Scown from Scholastic had the same idea and did a similar pose, which helped Marco draw the hand from different angles. It gave me the idea to dress like the main character at the book launch. My good friend Mary Kelleher made the outfit and here is Penny Scown and myself at the book launch of… have you guessed it?… Kate Sheppard. The reason I’ve worn it today is to show you the lengths I go to, to make my stories real for children. I’m not the only author who does – you might have seen Fifi Colston or Gareth Ward dressed in their steampunk costumes, and there are others. I write non-fiction books about historical events, famous people, and our wildlife in a creative way. Part of that is bringing it alive, whether it’s dressing the part or getting kids to act it out with me – or using props. -

The residency provides: • a grant of $35,000 to cover all costs including travel to Menton, insurance, living and accommodation costs. $15,000 is paid when your itinerary and insurance is confirmed, with $10,000 payments usually made in month two and three of the residency, assuming the Fellow remains in residency through this period. • a room beneath the terrace of Villa Isola Bella is available for use as a study. Accommodation is not available at the villa. Fellows make their own accommodation arrangements, often with advice from a previous Fellow. Katherine Mansfield spent long periods at Villa Isola Bella in 1919 and 1920 after she contracted tuberculosis. -

FIONA KIDMAN, WRITER: A FEMINIST CRITIQUE OF NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY A thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Literature at Massey University, Albany New Zealand Anna Elizabeth Leclercq 2012 i ABSTRACT Two perspectives are pervasive in Fiona Kidman’s writing: the reconstruction of historical female voices, through fictional narrative; the recording of contemporary female voices, through autobiographical commentary and through fictional characterisations. This thesis engages with examples of Kidman’s work which show Kidman’s literary project to be the shaping of a New Zealand Pakeha cultural identity from a feminist perspective. In other words, Kidman constructs a patriarchal plot in order to demonstrate and expose the historical and contemporary inequalities of women’s position within New Zealand society. Their fictionalisations are influenced significantly by relationship intimacy, but their intention lies deeper. For those who wish to explore below the emotional surface of Kidman’s stories, there lies a social metanarrative, a journey of discovery for the reader. Each characterisation is part of an arranged message which Kidman challenges us to decipher. Kidman’s constructed narrative is manipulative and manipulated; put together in order to explore and explain the workings of the female psyche under stress; how the female psyche responds to the pressures of living within a patriarchal society; those ways in which the female psyche acts and reacts when seeking to buck the prevailing system, and how the system responds to this. -

IBBY Honour List 2012 1 IBBY Honour List 2012 The IBBY Honour List is a biennial selection of outstanding, recently published books, honour- ing writers, illustrators and translators from IBBY member countries. The first Honour List in 1956 was a selection of 15 entries from 12 countries. For the 2012 Honour List, 58 countries have sent 169 nominations in 44 different languages. Selected for the 2012 list are 65 entries in the category of Writing; 54 in the category Illustration; and 50 in the category Translation. Included for the first time is a book in Ojibwe from Canada, as well as two titles in Khmer from Cambodia and three new books on Arabic from the United Arab Emirates. This steady increase demonstrates the growth of IBBY and the continuing efforts to share good books across the world. The titles are selected by the National Sections of IBBY, who are invited to nominate books charac- teristic of their country and suitable to recommend for publication in different languages. -

Sturm, her own thesis, her short stories, articles and book reviews written in the 1950s before her writing and publishing silence. It examines where this writing places her in context of the post-Second World War period and where it could have placed her in the New Zealand literary canon had it not been for her ensuing literary silence. The first chapter briefly discusses the nature of literary silences and then introduces Sturm with some biographical information. It details the approach that I take writing the thesis using three readings of her works: as social informer; as woman writer; and as Maori writer. These readings inform my commentary on her work and attempt to place her in the literary canon of the fifties. I discuss my reservations, as a Pakeha, in approaching Sturm as a Maori writer. I use Sturm’s own comments “that many literary works can be taken as social documents and many authors can be taken as social informers” as a licence to use Sturm herself as “social informer”. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by NECTAR Journal of Postcolonial Cultures and Societies ISSN No. 1948-1845 (Print); 1948-1853 (Electronic) The sinking of the rainbow warrior: Responses to an international act of terrorism Janet Wilson Introduction: the Rainbow Warrior Affair The Rainbow Warrior affair, an act of sabotage against the flagship of the Greenpeace fleet, the Rainbow Warrior, when berthed at Marsden wharf in Auckland harbour on 10th July 1985, dramatised in unprecedented ways issues of neo-imperialism, national security, eco-politics and postcolonialism in New Zealand. The bombing of the yacht by French secret service agents effectively prevented its participation in a Nuclear Free Pacific campaign in which it was to have headed the Pacific Fleet Flotilla to Moruroa atoll protesting French nuclear testing. Outrage was compounded by tragedy: the vessel’s Portuguese photographer, Fernando Pereira, went back on board to get his camera after the first detonation and was drowned in his cabin following the second one. The evidence of French Secret Service (Direction Generale de la Securite Exterieure or DGSE) involvement which sensationally emerged in the following months, not only enhanced New Zealand’s status as a small nation and wrongful victim of French neo-colonial ambitions, it dramatically magnified Greenpeace’s role as coordinator of New Zealand and Pacific resistance to French bomb-testing. The stand-off in New Zealand –French political relations for almost a decade until French bomb testing in the Pacific ceased in 1995 notwithstanding, this act of terrorism when reviewed after almost 25 years in the context of New Zealand’s strategic and political negotiations of the 1980s, offers a focus for considering the changing composition of national and regional postcolonial alliances during Cold War politics. -

In either case, within the broad stream of the British tradition, the history of the country has been the history of its discovery – a discovery continuing still – of a tradition of its own.
