ABOUT THE FPAFA-KCAC PATAN MUSEUM RESIDENCY THE FPAFA-KCAC PATAN MUSEUM RESIDENCY is an ALL EXPENSES PAID ARTIST RESIDENCY to the city of Patan in the Himalayan country of , home of Mount Everest. Known as the City of Fine Arts, Patan (also called Lalitpur) is home to the Patan Museum, one of the most beautiful museums in South Asia. The GARDEN STUDIO—run by the Kathmandu Contemporary Arts Centre (KCAC)—is situated within the Patan Museum grounds and include access to 2000 volume library donated by the TATE Britain and many private donors. The Patan Museum is located within the magnificent Patan Royal Palace Complex on , a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site.

PURPOSE Nepal’s traditional arts scene boasts many of the finest master arts practitioners in the world today in one of the most breathtaking environments in the world, offering the visual artist innumerable opportunities for creative inspiration. The FPAFA-KCAC Patan Museum Residency offers a unique and exciting opportunity exclusively for the Members of the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts to live and create in a world class creative environment, and generates opportunities for FPAFA artists to interact and collaborate with the local and international arts community and arts professionals. Nepal lies at the crossroads of the exciting international arts communities of Asia; the Nepali arts scene regularly hosts a vital group of international contemporary artists from the United States, Europe, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, India and Singapore. The Selected Artist will be required to give two presentations on their work –one during the Residency, to be arranged by Ms. Sangeeta Thapa, Director of KCAC and Siddhartha Art Gallery—and upon their return, a presentation to the Board of the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

RESIDENCY PROVISIONS  The Residency provides the selected artist with paid round trip coach/economy class airfare to Kathmandu.  The artist will also receive a fully funded one month GARDEN STUDIO residency within the Patan Museum grounds and…  A fully funded one month’s private living accommodation within walking distance of the Patan Museum studio; payment will be made directly from FPAFA to KCAC. If the Selected Artist cannot make use of one full month, the Residency may be used for a period of less than four weeks, with Residency obligations considered to have been fully satisfied.

IMPORTANT: The Residency does NOT include a stipend; all addition expenses such as materials, food, taxi transportation and miscellaneous expenses will be borne by the artist. Artists are STRONGLY encouraged to carry Medical Travelers Insurance and to refer to the (CDC) Centers for Disease Control website for vaccination recommendations. PAFA Faculty, Certificate, BFA or MFA graduates of PAFA, and/or current or past participants in PAFA’s Post-Graduate Baccalaureate Program—as well as artists who are students of PAFA’s Continuing Education Program, and those BFA students who will graduate in 2018 are eligible to apply! PREVIOUS AWARDEES, FPAFA Board members and their family members are not eligible for application and consideration.

SELECTION PROCESS The SELECTION PROCESS is twofold. Three finalists are chosen from the first round of selection by an invited U.S. juror. The three Finalists’ submissions then will go forward to Kathmandu, Nepal, for selection of the Resident Artist by Sangeeta Thapa, curator, co-founder and director of KCAC, and will be announced the weekend of March 24th, 2018.

(U.S.) WILLIAM VALERIO, Ph.D., The Patricia Van Burgh Allison Director and CEO of Woodmere Art Museum! Valerio was Assistant Director of Administration at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He attended Williams College, earned a PhD from Yale, specializing in Italian Futurism, and worked at the Queens Museum of Art as a curator before moving to the PMA. A visionary and progressive director, Valerio has been responsible for some of the most dynamic exhibitions in the Philadelphia region.

(NEPAL) SANGEETA RANA THAPA is co-founder and co-director of Kathmandu Contemporary Arts Centre (KCAC), and co-founder of the Kathmandu International Arts Festival (KIAF), now planning its third international edition. She is also founder and director of Siddhartha Arts Gallery (SAG) in Kathmandu—the premier visual arts gallery in Nepal. A DeVos Fellow of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Ms. Thapa is a visual arts curator and arts writer of respected international stature. 2

ABOUT KCAC AT THE PATAN MUSEUM On the 25th March 2012 KCAC opened within the Patan Museum, one of the finest museums in Asia and a UNESCO world heritage site. KCAC has one large studio in the garden; specifications for the studios will be provided upon artist selection. The state-of-the-art Patan Museum lies within the Patan Royal Palace complex; dating from the late of the ; the entire palace restoration was recently completed with the support from the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund. Set in one of the world's most beautiful squares, Museum was conceived not only to display a collection of artifacts as a showcase for the cultural legacy of Nepal but also to celebrate the Malla-period palace itself. This unique synthesis of art and setting has resulted in one of South Asia's most beautiful museums. UPDATE: The Patan Museum Studios and Royal Palace—recently restored by the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust and the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation—survived the 2015 Earthquake. Though several temples of its many temples were damaged, the initiation of restoration work on Patan Durbar Square—which the Museum and Palace faces—survived ensures that Patan Durbar Square will remain one of UNESC’s most magnificent World Heritage Sites.

RESIDENCY SUPPORT FOR THE ARTIST The FPAFA-KCAC PATAN MUSEUM RESIDENCY is offered from JULY of 2018 through JUNE of 2019, in accord with the FPAFA fiscal year. Artists will be asked to select their first and second periods of preference; KCAC will do its best to accommodate Artists stayed preference. The Selected Artist should be aware that the monsoon season in Nepal runs from late May through August, with frequent rain interspersed with sunny weather. The rest of the year is pleasant, sunny and generally dry with the months of November, December and January experiencing moderate cold.

FPAFA-KCAC staff will assist artists who wish to show their work or share their skills while in Patan/Kathmandu, and will help artists make the necessary local contacts to achieve these goals. While the purpose of a FPAFA-KCAC Fellowship is to provide creative individuals the time and space to develop new work, artists may be eager to share what they produce during their residencies. To this end and to the extent possible, we will help arrange for exhibition spaces or presentation venues. PLEASE NOTE that any additional costs entailed in exhibition arrangements will be borne by the artists. More detailed information about day-to-day life in Nepal, Patan and environs will be provided to the selected artist upon determination.

HOW TO APPLY: APPLICATION GUIDELINES AND CRITERIA The basis for application is work samples; please submit FOUR work samples. 2D works may provide one detail view. All entries must be original works created by the artist. All media accepted. WORK MAY BE SUBMITTED TWO WAYS:

CD SUBMISSION THROUGH MAIL CDs will not be returned but retained for PFAFA Archives.  Submit 4 images of your BEST work on CD in JPG format with dpi of 300 (NO DVDs); work need not be current, but should have been completed within the last five years. IMPORTANT: Please name and number them in the order you would like them to be viewed.
