  • Graham Pont the Cinema As Secular Temple
Graham Pont The Cinema as Secular Temple: Ethos, Form and Symbolism of the Capitol Theatre Since the tetraktys is the most important symbol of the Pythagorean school and system, its prominence in the form and decoration of the Capitol Theatre, Melbourne (Australia), suggests that this building was designed in the Pythagorean spirit. The tetraktys encodes the fundamental proportions or harmonies of the musical scale (1:2, 2:3, 3:4) and so one would expect to find these same proportions used in the form and decoration of the Capitol as well as evidence of relevant musical thought and inspiration in the writings of its designers, Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin. Graham Pont explains the significance of the tetraktys in the Pythagorean tradition, identifies the Capitol as a “secular temple” in form and ethos, and indicates possible contemporary influences on the theatre’s remarkable motif of the “Crystal Tetraktys” and other symbolism. Music is a parallel art [to Architecture] in that it appeals to primitive instinct, and is independent of representation of ideas, of literature. Music is, so far, the one great art that has developed in modern times, because it had kept pace with science, as that has clarified the phenomena of sound, and with the mechanical progress that has opened new avenues of musical expression. —Walter Burley Griffin [Griffin 1940-49, IV, 16] Introduction On 7 November 1999, the Capitol Theatre of Melbourne reopened to the acclamation of a capacity crowd—a notable event in the later history of twentieth-century architecture. This masterpiece of Walter Burley and Marion Mahony Griffin only narrowly escaped demolition in the 1960s but the magnificent auditorium has been acquired by RMIT University, Melbourne, and is being restored to something of its former glory.

  • Algorithmic Music Analysis: a Case Study of a Prelude from David Cope's
ALGORITHMIC MUSIC ANALYSIS: A C ASE STUDY OF A PRELUDE FROM DAVID COPE’S “FROM DARKNESS, LIGHT” Reiner Krämer, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepar ed for the Degree of DOCTOR OF P HILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2015 APPROVED: David Bard-Schwarz, Major Professor Andrew May, Minor Professor Thomas Sovík, Committee Member Frank Heidlberger, Chair of the Department of Music History, Theory, and Ethnomusicology Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Costas Tsatsoulis, Interim Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Krämer, Reiner. Algorithmic Music Analysis: A Case Study of a Prelude from David Cope’s “From Darkness, Light.” Doctor of Philosophy (Music Theory), May 2015, 433 pp., 16 tables, 57 figures, 125 examples, bibliography, 278 titles. The use of algorithms in compositional practice has been in use for centuries. With the advent of computers, formalized procedures have become an important part of computer music. David Cope is an American composer that has pioneered systems that make use of artificial intelligence programming techniques. In this dissertation one of David Cope’s compositions that was generated with one of his processes is examined in detail. A general timeline of algorithmic compositional practice is outlined from a historical perspective, and realized in the Common Lisp programming language as a musicological tool. David Cope’s compositional output is summarized with an explanation of what types of systems he has utilized in the analyses of other composers’ music, and the composition of his own music. Twentieth century analyses techniques are formalized within Common Lisp as algorithmic analyses tools.

Summa summarum: Över hundra nya låtar i listan.

  • Soul As Structure: Plato and Aristotle on the Harmonia Theory
SOUL AS STRUCTURE: PLATO AND ARISTOTLE ON THE HARMONIA THEORY A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Douglas Justin Young January 2007 © 2007 Douglas Justin Young ALL RIGHTS RESERVED SOUL AS STRUCTURE: PLATO AND ARISTOTLE ON THE HARMONIA THEORY Douglas Justin Young, Ph. D. Cornell University 2007 We are conscious beings who think, understand, feel and perceive. We are also material beings composed out of ordinary material stuff. Determining the pre- cise connections between the psychological and the material remains problemat- ic. The harmonia theory is one of the first attempts to frame this as a problem about composite objects. The theory itself is simple: the soul is the harmonia of the material parts of the body. But what a harmonia is and what the theory amounts to are matters of much dispute. I argue that a harmonia is best un- derstood as the structure of the body’s material parts. Plato introduces the theory in the Phaedo, and Aristotle mentions it in On the Soul. In both instances it is roundly criticized. Given that Plato thinks the soul is independent of the body, it is not surprising that he rejects the harmonia theory. However, he has been described as “extraordinarily obtuse” for arguing against the view, since doing so seems to undermine his arguments for a tripar- tite soul. Aristotle’s rejection has been thought equally perplexing, since his own positive view (that the soul is the form of a living body) looks very much like a version of the harmonia theory.
