QUARTERLY REPORT BOTTLED WATER QUALITY (April-June, 2019) PCRWR QUARTERLY REPORT BOTTLED WATER QUALITY (April-June, 2019) PAKISTAN COUNCIL OF RESEARCH IN WATER RESOURCES Ministry of Science & Technology Khyban-e-Johar, H-8/1, Islamabad. www.pcrwr.gov.pk April-June, 2019 SUMMARY The poor quality of drinking water has forced a large cross-section of citizens to buy bottled water. However, many of the mineral water companies were found selling contaminated water. To monitor and improve the quality of bottled water, the Government of Pakistan through Ministry of Science and Technology has designated the task for quarterly monitoring of bottled/mineral water brands to PCRWR. According to the monitoring report for the quarter April-June, 2019 following is the brief overview of the findings. TAJ Pure ,Main Bazar Madina Town، Taj Bagh Scheme, Lahore Drinking Water 1 April-June, 2019 INTRODUCTION Drinking water quality is deteriorating continually due to biological contamination from human waste, chemical pollutants from industries and agricultural inputs. Piped water also gets contaminated because pipes are laid very close to sewerage lines or open drains and cause many serious water borne diseases. It was found that 45% of infant deaths have been attributed to diarrhea and about 60% to overall infectious waterborne diseases in Pakistan. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 25-30% of the diseases are gastro-intestinal in nature. The poor quality of drinking water has forced a large cross-section of citizens to buy bottled water. As a consequence of this expanding market a mushroom growth of bottled water industry in the country is witnessed during the last few years. However, many of the mineral water companies were found selling contaminated water. To monitor and improve the quality of bottled water, the government of Pakistan has designated the PCRWR as focal point agency. 1. Ministry of Science & Technology informed PCRWR Vide U.O. No. 5(21)/2004- ATA-II dated 17.10.2005 that the Cabinet in its meeting under the chairmanship of Prime Minister directed Ministry of Science& Technology to undertake regular survey/samples of bottled/mineral water and publicize the results on a quarterly basis and follow up with punitive/legal action. 2. Ministry of Science & Technology has assigned the task of quality monitoring of bottled water and publicize the results to PCRWR Vide U.O. No.1(1)/2005-Secy (MoST) dated 8.12.2005. PCRWR SAMPLING METHODOLOGY No. of Brands 77 Collected No. of Cities 09 (Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Tando Jam, Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Targeted Faisalabad, Peshawar, Sialkot) Composition of PCRWR Research Officer (1) Sampling Team as per PCRWR Laboratory Assistants (2) MoU Signed between PCRWR & PSQCA PSQCA Senior staff member/field officer (1) Samples of 77 commercially available brands of mineral/bottled water were collected jointly by PCRWR and PSQCA from local market of 9 cities of Pakistan. These samples were collected by the senior staff members of National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) of PCRWR Sampling Procedure Head Office and Regional/district Water Quality Laboratories of PCRWR during April to June, 2019. A set of four bottles of each brand was collected and sealed on site. Identification codes were allotted to all the brands according to PCRWR Bottled Water Brands Identification System. Handed over to shopkeeper at the time of sample Sample No. 1 collection; Preserved in the National Water Quality Laboratory of Sample No. 2 Transparency PCRWR, Islamabad for future record. Through “Flood Plan 2020”, Lahore District aims at saving life and property, protecting vital installation and organizing timely information, evacuation, rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations. Lahore District is protected by Shahdara and Sharakpur bunds on the right side and by Mehmood Booti on the left. To save the population from the havocs of flood, a survey of the protection bunds has been got completed by the authorities of Irrigation Department in Coordination with Revenue Department. Necessary repair / maintenance work will be completed by 10th June, 2020 positively. All departments including LESCO, PTCL, SWM, Rescue 1122, WASA, Livestock, Health, PHA and Civil Defence have prepared comprehensive Contingency Plans which will help counter the havoc played by the floods.
