Armbruster1 Baryancistrus beggini, new species, is described from the upper Rı´o Orinoco and lower portions of its tributaries, the Rı´o Guaviare in Colombia and Rı´o Ventuari in Venezuela. Baryancistrus beggini is unique within Hypostominae in having a uniformly dark black to brown base color with a blue sheen in life, and the first three to five plates of the midventral series strongly bent, forming a distinctive keel above the pectoral fins along each side of the body. It is further distinguished by having a naked abdomen, two to three symmetrical and ordered predorsal plate rows including the nuchal plate, and the last dorsal-fin ray adnate with adipose fin via a posterior membrane that extends beyond the preadipose plate up to half the length of the adipose-fin spine. Baryancistrus beggini es la u´ nica especie entre los Hypostominae que presenta fondo negro oscuro a marro´ n sin marcas, con brillo azuloso en ejemplares vivos. Las primeras tres a cinco placas de la serie medioventral esta´n fuertemente dobladas, formando una quilla notable por encima de las aletas pectorales en cada lado del cuerpo. Armbruster1 Two new ancistrin genera and species are described from main channels and tributaries of the upper Orinoco River in Amazonas, Venezuela. Micracanthicus vandragti is black with white spots and distinguished by its small body-size, large gas-bladder capsules, and highly protrusible mandibles with short tooth cups and five to eight long teeth per tooth cup. The known range of Micracanthicus vandragti is restricted to the lower Ventuari River and portions of the Orinoco River near its rocky, anastomose confluence with the Ventuari River. Soromonichthys stearleyi is green with small yellow-gold spots on the head and thin vertical bars on the body and has long dentary and premaxillary tooth cups with 39–69 teeth per tooth cup. It is distinguished by its coloration and by its unique pattern of plate loss on the snout: plates absent from mesethmoid surface and anteriormost margin of snout. Soromonichthys stearleyi is known only from Soromoni Creek, a northern tributary of the upper Orinoco draining southern slopes of Mount Duida. Baryancistrus Demantoidesand Hemiancistrus Subviridis, Two New Uniquely Colored Species of Catfishes from Venezuela

Armbruster*** Baryancistrus demantoides and Hemiancistrus subviridis are two new species of loricariids from southern Venezuela with an olive ground coloration and white to cream-colored or golden-yellow spots. Baryancistrus demantoides is known only from the upper río Orinoco drainage while H. subviridis is also known from the río Casiquiare drainage. In addition to its coloration, B. demantoides can be distinguished from all other ancistrins by having the dorsal and adipose fins connected by an expanded posterior section of the dorsal-fin membrane, golden-yellow spots confined to the anterior portion of the body, and greater than 30 teeth per jaw ramus. Hemiancistrus subviridis can be separated from all other ancistrins by coloration, lacking a connection between the dorsal and adipose fins and having less than 30 teeth per jaw raSmus. Baryancistrus demantoides é conhecida somente da bacia do rio Orinoco superior, enquanto H. subviridis é também conhecida da baFcia do rio Casiquiare. Além da coloração, B. demantoides pode ser distinguido de todos os outros ancistríneos por ter as nadadeiras dorsal e adiposa conectadas por uma secção posterior expandida da membrana da nadadeira dorsal, manchas amarelo-douradas restritas à porção anterior do corpo, e mais de 30 dentes por ramo mandibular. -

The many operational Earth Observation platforms provide options for the generation of land cover maps, each with unique characteristics, as well as considerable semantic differences in the definition of classes. Here we compare forest cover and surface water estimates over four time periods spanning three decades (1989–2018) for ~1.3 million km2 encompassing the Xingu river basin, Brazil, from published, freely accessible remotely sensed classifications. -

To investigate this paradox, we collected δ13C and δ15N stable isotope signatures from 649 specimens representing 32 loricariid genera and 82 species from 19 local assemblages distributed across South America. We calculated vectors representing the distance and direction of each specimen relative to the δ15N/δ13C centroid for its local assemblage, and then examined the evolutionary diversification of loricariids across assemblage isotope niche space by regressing the mean vector for each genus in each assemblage onto a phylogeny reconstructed from osteological characters. Results: Loricariids displayed a total range of δ15N assemblage centroid deviation spanning 4.9%, which is within the tissue–diet discrimination range known for Loricariidae, indicating that they feed at a similar trophic level and that δ15N largely reflects differences in their dietary protein content. Total range of δ13C deviation spanned 7.4%, which is less than the minimum range reported for neotropical river fish communities, suggesting that loricariids selectively assimilate a restricted subset of the full basal resource spectrum available to fishes. -

Baryancistrus xanthellus is distinguished from all other Baryancistrus species by the presence of yellow spots along the entire body and conspicuous yellow marks on distal tip of dorsal and caudal fins. Baryancistrus chrysolomus is distinguished from its congeners by its uniform dark body coloration and presence of yellow bands on dorsal and caudal fins. Despite the lack of formal description, these species are very popular in the international aquarium trade. We expect that these formal descriptions might contribute to the improvement of Brazilian regulations in the international trade of ornamental loricariids. Duas espécies novas de hipostomíneos do gênero Baryancistrus são descritas da bacia do rio Xingu. Baryancistrus xanthellus se diferencia de todas as outras espécies de Baryancistrus pela presença de pontos amarelos em todo o corpo e presença de manchas conspícuas amarelas nas pontas das nadadeiras dorsal e caudal. Baryancistrus chrysolomus se distingue de seus congêneres pela sua coloração escura uniforme e presença de uma faixa amarela nas nadadeiras dorsal e caudal. Apesar de não estarem formalmente descritos, esses peixes são muito populares no comércio aquariofilista internacional. Esperamos que essas descrições formais contribuam para melhorar a regulamentação brasileira no comércio internacional de loricariídeos ornamentais.
