With the graduation of 2016-17 Canada West Third Team All-Star Grant Sitton, the Vikes turned to a scoring by committee approach in the absence of the Sitton’s 19.2 points per game. In his 15th season in charge of the program head coach Craig Beaucamp added two veteran players to help the team. With the addition of NCAA Division 2 transfer Mason Loewen and the return of team- leader Jordan Charles from injury, the Vikes were able to bring in two immediate impact players to try and fill the hole that Sitton’s departure inevitably left. Loewen (13.7 points-per-game), Justin Kinnear (12.4), Scott Kellum (12.1), Charles (11.9) and Jason Scully (9.9) all combined to showcase the depth in scoring that the Vikes relied upon throughout the season. After a pre-season schedule that saw the team record five wins in eight games, the Vikes season got off to a rocky start as they were only able to pick up a split with the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in a pair of home games. That difficult beginning of the season continued into the following weekend where the team was swept on the road by the Brandon Bobcats, falling in a pair of close games by scores of 89-82 and 80-70. Starting the season 1-3 led the Vikes to begin playing some of their best basketball of the season in their remaining six games before the winter break. The team roared out of the gates in Langley, B.C. with Scully scoring 43 points over the two games that the Vikes defeated the Trinity Western Spartans in dominant fashion with scores of 85-62 and 93-77. Returning to Victoria after four-straight games on the road, The Vikes outlasted the Saskatchewan Huskies by scores of 87-77 and 83-76 in a pair of close games with Kellum scoring 27 points in the Saturday night affair. A trip to Edmonton to play the then No. 3 ranked team in the nation, the Alberta Golden Bears, for their final two games of the first half of the season produced both one of the Vikes toughest losses as well as perhaps their most important win of the season. The highly-ranked Golden Bears took the opening game of the weekend by a score of 89-63 but the Vikes came roaring back the very next night, going an incredible 18-31 from beyond the arc with six different players hitting a three-pointer to hand the Golden Bears their first loss of the season. That momentum wouldn’t necessarily carry over into the second half of the season as the team went .500 in their first six games after the winter break, being swept by the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, sweeping the Manitoba Bisons and splitting with the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. A 100-97 victory over the Mount Royal Cougars at the annual Shoot for the Cure game in which both Kinnear and Scully scored 21 points was the final victory of the season for the Vikes. They ended regular season play with three-straight losses at the hands of those very same Cougars and the UBC Thunderbirds. Entering the playoffs with a record of 10-10 and an RPI of .4954 earned the Vikes a ninth-place seeding and a trip to Saskatoon to face the eight-seeded Huskies in a winner-take-all Canada West Play-In game. Trailing by as many as 18 points in the second quarter, the Vikes scrapped their way back into the game, but ultimately came up just short in an 82-80 season-ending loss. Both Loewen and Charles recorded 20 points in the defeat.
