Splitstoser Researcher/Consultant An overview of the khipus in the Dumbarton Oaks collections Dr. Gary Urton and what we know today about the systems of information they contain. Consultant Dr. Jeffrey C. Splitstoser is the leading authority on Wari khipus, Dr. Sabine Hyland having studied all known examples in collections throughout the world. Splitstoser is part of the Castillo de Huarmey Exhibition Design archaeological project, directed by Dr. Milosz Giersz, which produced the largest number of scientifi cally excavated Wari Ellen Richardson khipus to date. Splitstoser is also the textile specialist for the Huaca Prieta Archaeological Project, directed by Dr. Tom Dillehay, Curatorial Fellow where he discovered information encoded in warp patterning Samuel Shapiro in 6,200-year-old cotton textiles that were dyed with the world’s earliest known use of indigo blue. Research Library and Collection THE BARBARA AND WILLIAM CONKLIN COLLECTION Written in Knots: Undeciphered Accounts of Andean Life is a tribute to the generosity of Barbara and William J Conklin, who gave Dumbarton Oaks their collection of 136 Pre-Columbian and ethnographic objects. Their gift, which includes textile fragments of exquisite manufacture and seven remarkable khipus, allows the Museum’s Andean collection to reach new heights. This exhibition explores the long-standing Andean tradition of communicating through cords, knots, and colors. An alternative to writing, these fi ber records persisted through time, documenting the particularities of different cultures, while always adhering to the William J Conklin at home, same basic tenets. c. 2016. Crucial to the development of the show were two khipu workshops organized under the auspices of Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, in which new developments in the fi eld and the latest research on khipus were generously shared by its participants, some of whom also collaborated on this exhibition. A product of both the Conklins’ donation and innovative scholarship, this is the fi rst exhibition in the United States to comprehensively bring together Wari, Inka and Colonial khipus. We are honored to share this unique gift with our visitors at Dumbarton Oaks. JUAN ANTONIO MURRO ANDEAN CORDKEEPING AN INTRODUCTION The Andean region of west-central South America was recordkeeping. WARI KHIPUS The Wari ruled most of present-day Peru from 600 to 1000 CE, a period of time also referred to as the Middle Horizon, forging South America’s fi rst empire. The Wari developed the khipu to meet the demands of running an empire without writing. Most likely created by combining the metaphorical connotation of knots (representing something that ties, binds, “commits”) with existing emblematic systems based on color (such SEGMENTED MONOCHROME MOTTLED BARBER POLE as those found in Paracas and Nasca wrapped staffs and wrapped cords), they developed a device that for all intents and purposes served as script. Wari khipus are the most colorful of all the khipu traditions, perhaps refl ecting a connection with earlier color-wrapping practices. To understand the importance of khipus to the Wari, we must imagine living in a society where color was not merely decoration like it is for the most part today. In a society without writing, color most likely held far more importance as a messaging medium than it does today. All Wari khipus have wrapped pendant cords, a feature not found in Inka khipus. Wari subsidiary cords are also colorful coming in monochrome, barber-pole, mottled, or segmented patterns. While both Wari and Inka khipus incorporate natural colors of cotton and camelid fi ber, Wari khipus are more likely to also include dyed fi bers. In Wari khipus with color seriation, the fi rst or last pendant cords are frequently not wrapped but knotted instead. We know almost nothing about Wari khipu numerical systems. Unlike Inka khipus, where a knot’s type (overhand, fi gure-8, and long) and position on a cord determine its value, Wari knots are always overhand, double overhand, or in rare instances triple overhand (or more), and they are tied immediately after a cord’s wrapping or attachment to a parent cord. Hints about their numerical systems come from the number of knots tied on cords, which never exceed ten, suggesting a base-10 numerical system; however, almost 70% of all Wari cords have either zero or one knot, suggesting perhaps the simultaneous presence of a binary system based on presence or absence. I analyze how they incorporated aspects of their own culture and values into their interpretations of Inca khipus’ structure and functions. As Incas did not leave behind a written language or even clear non-written descriptions of their khipus, anthropologists interpreted khipus’ purposes with a limited base of Inca perspectives. Thus, every work of khipu literature that I study reflects both elements of Inca culture and the author’s own cultural perspectives as a twentieth or twenty-first century academic. I show how each work is indicative of modern cultural views on writing, as well as academic movements and broader social trends that were prominent during the author’s time.

    journal of jesuit studies 6 (2019) 270-293 brill.com/jjs Catholic Presence and Power: Jesuit Painter Bernardo Bitti at Lake Titicaca in Peru Christa Irwin Marywood University [email protected] Abstract Bernardo Bitti was an Italian Jesuit and painter who traveled to the viceroyalty of Peru at the end of the sixteenth century to make altarpieces in the service of the order’s conversion campaigns. He began his New World career in Lima, the viceregal capital and then, over a span of thirty-five years, traveled to Jesuit mission centers in cities throughout Peru, leaving a significant imprint on colonial Peruvian painting. In 1586, Bitti was in Juli, a small town on Lake Titicaca in southern Peru, where the Jesuits had arrived a decade prior and continually faced great resistance from the local popula- tion. In this paper, I will argue that Bitti’s paintings were tools implemented by the Jesuit missionaries seeking to establish European, Christian presence in the conflicted city. Thus, Bitti’s contribution at Juli can serve as but one example of how the Jesuits used art as part of their methodology of conversion. After a failed attempt by an earlier set of missionaries, and significant hesi- tancy on the part of the Jesuits the evangelization efforts at Juli would eventu- ally come to mark an example of success for other Jesuit sites. Juli presents a fascinating case of Jesuit mission activity because it offers documentation of the indigenous culture’s integration into a newly created Christian town.

    Joseph Kearns Campbell October 30, 1927 — August 4, 1997 Joseph Kearns Campbell, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, passed away peacefully at his home in Fredricksburg Texas on August 4, 1997. Professor Campbell is survived by his wife, Sigrid (Beicht); daughter, Sabine Hyland; son, Oliver; brother, John D. Campbell; and sisters, Ann Campbell and Susan Campbell Shell. Joe was born and raised in Belleville, Pennsylvania. In 1945, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy and served three and one half years as a Radarman. In 1953, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering at Pennsylvania State College and then worked for eight years as a Design Engineer at New Holland Machine Company in New Holland, Pennsylvania. During the next four years, he worked at Allegheny Ballistics Laboratory in Maryland as part of the team that developed the Polaris missile launch system. In 1967, he completed a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering at Cornell and joined the faculty as an Extension Engineer. Joe retired from Cornell in 1992 and he and Sigrid moved to Fredricksburg, Texas shortly thereafter. Joe had a very successful career at Cornell University and was active in teaching, research and extension, serving as Department Extension Leader from 1983-89. His outgoing personality, formal training and practical “hands- on” engineering experience in industry made him a natural extension educator and a great university teacher. Joe’s leadership in extension was clearly evident as he inspired all those around him to expand their efforts in transferring information and technology into the farmer’s hands.

Green [email protected] Two views of the Spanish Jesuits dominate the historical literature. One view is that the Jesuits, much like other religious orders of the era, were protectors of Indigenous peoples. As missionaries, Jesuit priests militated for Indigenous human rights against greedy encomenderos (Spanish colonists who had been granted by the Crown ownership of Native bodies and labor) and the corrupt colonial state. AD 950–1950), their historical philology has been little understood. This study, based on original archival and ethnographic research, analyzes hybrid khipu/alphabetic texts known as “khipu boards,” examining their development in colonial Peru, and their role in twentieth-century Andean rituals. Particular attention is paid to a previously unknown sacred manuscript, the Entablo, from the community of San Pedro de Casta, Peru, which describes how villagers used khipu boards in their annual religious ceremonies until the 1950s. This study reveals new insights into the social and symbolic nature of post-Inka khipus as texts, particularly with reference to gender, place, and knowledge.     "Guest Editors' Introduction" Sabine Hyland, St. Norbert College Frank Salomon, University of Wisconsin-Madison Since about 2000, several converging debates have put Native Ameri- can ways of writing (in the broadest sense: communicating by inscribed marks) onto the scholarly front burner. A sensible ethnohistorian might ask, whatever took so long? Isn’t it evident that systems like pictography, petroglyphs, genealogical drawings, models of terrain, emblematic insignia, tribute tallies, colonial syllabograms, and the like form a very large part of humanity’s graphic practice? Shouldn’t anthropological common sense tell us that all kinds of inscription, not just “true writing,” make parts of a culture visible to its agents? Doesn’t historical common sense decree that any account of a people’s past is incomplete if it fails to consider their way of organizing action through signs? Yet somehow, for a very long time, Amerindian graphic inventions, with the important exception of Maya writing, were hardly ever addressed in discussions about literacy. This neglect was not for lack of evidence. Readers of Ethnohistory hardly need to be reminded that 115 years have passed since Garrick Mal- lery published Picture-Writing of the American Indians (1893). Rather it was a result of conceptual discord about what writing is and which properties 1 of “graphism”—André Leroi-Gourhan’s (1993 [1964]: 187–216) inclusivist term—merit study. In the first chapter of a deservedly influential compi- lation, The World’s Writing Systems (1996), Peter T. Daniels reaffirmed a deep-rooted—originally Aristotelian—definition of writing as phonography: recording by means of signs that stand for segments of the speech stream.
