Straddling the Arizona- Utah border, its sapphire blue water is rimmed by towering red sandstone cliffs, buttes, and more than 90 major canyons and beautiful sandy beaches—making it the ideal destination for houseboating, kayaking and other outdoor activities. Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas is one of the largest concessioners on the lake, operating marinas, lodges, restaurants, tours and houseboat/watercraft rentals in Arizona and Utah. It operates primarily out of two hubs: Wahweap Marina, located in Arizona near the town of Page, and at Bullfrog Marina, located mid-lake in Utah. In addition to the robust operations at these two destinations, Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas also offers amenities at Halls Crossing Marina, Hite and Dangling Rope Marina, all in Utah. SEASON Lake Powell is open year-round, however, peak visitation occurs between late May through October, with July and August being the busiest months. HISTORY Lake Powell is the nation’s second largest man-made reservoir. It was created by the damming of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon in order to provide drinking water and generate electricity for western cities such as Los Angeles and Phoenix, and to provide a place for recreation. The lake is named in honor of John Wesley Powell, who explored the area in 1869 as director of the U.S. Geological Survey. The lake lies within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which was created in 1972 “to provide for public use and enjoyment and to preserve the area’s scientific, historic, and scenic features.” The recreation area received more than two million visitors in 2012, 100,000 of whom stayed on a houseboat operated by Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas. FEES As a part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, there is an entrance fee for each private, non-commercial vehicle and its passengers that is valid for seven consecutive days. LAKE POWELL AT A GLANCE • Lake Powell is the second-largest man-made lake by surface area in the United States and is the largest based on current volume and surface area. • The lake is 186 miles long and has 1,960 miles of shoreline due to its countless inlets and side-canyons. • Lake Powell’s shoreline is longer than the west coast of the continental United States. • There are 96 named canyons along Lake Powell and many smaller ones that are unnamed. • Lake Powell is named in honor of John Wesley Powell, the one-armed Civil War veteran who explored the area in 1869 as director of the U.S. Geological Survey. • Construction of the Glen Canyon Dam started in 1956 and continued until 1964. • It took 17 years for the lake to fill once the dam was completed. • Lake Powell provides at least 7,500,000 acre-feet of water to Arizona, Nevada and California per year—enough water to accommodate the needs of 30 million families. • The lake’s maximum depth is 560 feet, making it one of the deepest lakes in the nation. • Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established in 1972 and encompasses 1.25 million acres. • Lake Powell, for which Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established, occupies only 13 percent of the recreation area. • Most of the lake rests in the State of Utah; its southernmost portion and Glen Canyon Dam are in Arizona. • In 2013, 2,012,967 people visited Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. • Over 100,000 people explore Lake Powell via houseboat each year. • Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is bordered by Capitol Reef and Canyonlands National Parks to the north, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to the west, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument and Grand Canyon National Park on its southwest side, and the Navajo Indian Reservation on the southeast. WAHWEAP MARINA Located off f Highway 89, Wahweap is the largest marina on the lake. It lies 280 miles north of Phoenix, AZ, 270 miles northeast of Las Vegas, NV, and 145 miles north of Grand Canyon National Park. The nearest airport is in Page, AZ, which has daily flights via Great Lake Airlines to many regional airport hubs. The marina is home to Lake Powell Resort, three restaurants (Rainbow Room, Wahweap Grille, Latitude 37), The Driftwood Lounge, Canyon Coffee, an RV and tent campground, boat tour operations, houseboat and watercraft rentals, and a private marina. MARINA Wahweap Marina offers a wide variety of services to boat owners and renters. With a state- of-the-art floating boat rental office, Wahweap has an inventory of 117 houseboats, 110 powerboats and water toys, including personal water craft, wakeboards and kayaks for rent. The facility also offers boating necessities and Canyon Coffee. The private marina features two launch ramps, services for boat owners and the newest restaurant addition at Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas - Latitude 37. LODGING On the banks of Wahweap Bay with its beautiful views of Lake Powell’s southern expanse of mesas and buttes, is the 348-room Lake Powell Resort. The three-diamond property offers double, queen, king-size beds and deluxe suites with a wide range of modern amenities, including a swimming pool, hot tub, gym, gift shop, business center, and free Wi-Fi in the lobby. Traditional Room Comfortable rooms with modern amenities. Traditional rooms can sleep up to four with two queen-bed rooms or accommodate two with one king or one queen bed. Rollaway beds and cribs also are available. Traditional rooms feature cable TV, mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, hair dryer and an alarm clock. These rooms are pet-friendly with a non-refundable deposit. Marina View Room Features all the amenities of the traditional room, with a spectacular view. Enjoy views of the marina, Tower Butte, Antelope Island, and Navajo Mountain from your patio or balcony. Lakeview Room These spacious rooms offer upgraded furnishings and a premium view of Lake Powell’s Wahweap Bay from oversized patios and balconies. Spacious Suites Suites provide lots of space for multiple guests to spread out and enjoy a Lake Powell vacation. Suites feature two bedrooms, a sitting room, and two bathrooms. Junior suites feature a sitting area, two bedrooms, and one bathroom. Two rollaways are allowed per suite. WAHWEAP MARINA DINING Lake Powell Resort offers a variety of delicious and sustainable dining fare. As part of Aramark’s sustainable cuisine initiative, Lake Powell Resort’s menu is comprised of more than 50 percent sustainable and/or organic ingredients, with an emphasis on produce and foods that are locally-grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Seasonal fruits, vegetables and dinner specials are featured throughout the year. Rainbow Room The premier restaurant at Lake Powell is the Rainbow Room. It offers sweeping views of the lake, Wahweap Bay, and Castle Rock. The menu features gourmet sustainable food with a nod to the Southwest’s history of agriculture and bounty of Lake Powell. Serving a breakfast buffet in the morning and a seated dinner in the evenings, it also is available for group functions and events. Conveniently located in the resort’s lobby, the Rainbow Room is open March through October. Wahweap Grille This casual restaurant offers pizzas, burgers and other fare, giving diners the opportunity to choose ingredients to create a culinary masterpiece of their own. The Wahweap Grille is located outside the main lodge building, near the entrance of the Wahweap Marina facilities and affords the visitor breathtaking views of the lake and a large balcony. Open May through October. Driftwood Lounge Open year-round, the Driftwood Lounge is the perfect place to pull up a chair and relax with a signature cocktail and high-end bar food and recap the day’s activities. Adjacent to the Rainbow Room, the lounge offers awe-inspiring views of the lake and a chance to catch the game or news on one of the flat panel TVs. Canyon Coffee With two convenient locations – one in the resort lobby and one at the boat rental shop – Canyon Coffee is the place to be when you need a quick pick-me-up. Serving custom coffee creations made with hand-roasted beans, tea and grab-and-go meals, this is the morning go-to place for guests before they embark on an action-packed day at Lake Powell. Latitude 37 The latest addition to Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas’ collection of eateries is Latitude 37. A floating restaurant, located at Wahweap Marina, Latitude 37 is accessible from both land and water, with temporary slips for boaters. Inside the restaurant maintains seating for 50, while an upstairs outdoor balcony offers seating for 46 and gorgeous panoramic views of the lake. Latitude 37 serves lunch and dinner, along with a variety of appetizers, specialty drinks and desserts. WAHWEAP MARINA BOAT TOURS See some of Lake Powell’s most beautiful and well-known treasures on one of our scenic boat tours. Individual audio sets are included with every tour and are available in English, German, French, Italian and Japanese. All tours operate year-round, with a reduced schedule in the winter, and depart from Lake Powell Resort.

Schmidt2 with contributions from Maggi Kraft3, Daphnee Tuzlak4, and Alex Walker3 White Paper No. 1 Center for Colorado River Studies Quinney College of Natural Resources Utah State University November 10, 2016 Executive Summary The Fill Mead First (FMF) plan would establish Lake Mead reservoir as the primary water storage facility of the main-stem Colorado River and would relegate Lake Powell reservoir to a secondary water storage facility to be used only when Lake Mead is full. The objectives of the FMF plan are to re-expose some of Glen Canyon’s sandstone walls that are now inundated, begin the process of re-creating a riverine ecosystem in Glen Canyon, restore a more natural stream-flow, temperature, and sediment-supply regime of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon ecosystem, and reduce system-wide water losses caused by evaporation and movement of reservoir water into ground-water storage. The FMF plan would be implemented in three phases. Phase I would involve lowering Lake Powell to the minimum elevation at which hydroelectricity can still be produced (called minimum power pool elevation): 3490 ft asl (feet above sea level). This case can provide an opportunity for the students to learn strategy formulation and implementation along with some of the current issues such as “cooking the books”. Some sections of the Lake Powell case are real life situations, but all of the numbers and most of operations information are fictitious. Four experienced and knowledgeable men started Lake Powell Company with many opportunities and strength. However the company has lost money in the last five years. Students analyze, formulate and write an implementation of a strategy to save this company. Students then try to answer the following questions. What should be the proposed plan to Richmond for the Marina in order to have an effective, efficient, and profitable operation? How would it be funded? However the instructor will look at other scenarios and ask the students to figure out the four partner’s real goal. Swaim Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc PO Box 1383 Bozeman, Montana 59771 February 14, 2017 Final San Juan River Water Temperature Retrospective Report February 14, 2017 Executive Summary Miller Ecological Consultants conducted a retrospective analysis of existing San Juan River water temperature datasets and larval fish data. Water temperature data for all years available were evaluated in conjunction with the timing and number of larvae captured in the annual larval fish monitoring surveys that are required by the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRBRIP) Long Range Plan. Under the guidance of the SJRBRIP, Navajo Dam experimental releases were conducted and evaluated from 1992-1998. After this research period, the SJRBRIP completed the flow recommendations. The SJRBRIP established flow recommendations for the San Juan River designed to maintain or improve habitat for endangered Colorado Pikeminnow Ptychocheilus lucius and Razorback Sucker Xyrauchen texanus by modifying reservoir release patterns from Navajo Dam (Holden 1999). The flow recommendations were designed to mimic the natural hydrograph or flow regime in terms of magnitude, duration and frequency of flows. Water is released from the deep hypolimnetic zone of the reservoir, which results in water temperatures that are cooler than natural, pre-dam conditions. Water temperatures in the San Juan River have been monitored and recorded at several locations as part of the SJRBRIP since 1992.
