Fill Mead First: a technical assessment1 John C. Schmidt2 with contributions from Maggi Kraft3, Daphnee Tuzlak4, and Alex Walker3 White Paper No. 1 Center for Colorado River Studies Quinney College of Natural Resources Utah State University November 10, 2016 Executive Summary The Fill Mead First (FMF) plan would establish Lake Mead reservoir as the primary water storage facility of the main-stem Colorado River and would relegate Lake Powell reservoir to a secondary water storage facility to be used only when Lake Mead is full. The objectives of the FMF plan are to re-expose some of Glen Canyon’s sandstone walls that are now inundated, begin the process of re-creating a riverine ecosystem in Glen Canyon, restore a more natural stream-flow, temperature, and sediment-supply regime of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon ecosystem, and reduce system-wide water losses caused by evaporation and movement of reservoir water into ground-water storage. The FMF plan would be implemented in three phases. Phase I would involve lowering Lake Powell to the minimum elevation at which hydroelectricity can still be produced (called minimum power pool elevation): 3490 ft asl (feet above sea level). At this elevation, the water surface area of Lake 1 suggested citation: Schmidt, J. C., Kraft, M., Tuzlak, D., and Walker, A. 2016. Fill Mead First: a technical assessment. • Lake Powell Mansour Sharifzadeh, (E-Mail: [email protected]), California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Journal of Business Case Studies – Second Quarter 2007 Volume 3, Number 2 Lake Powell Mansour Sharifzadeh, (E-mail: [email protected]), California State Polytechnic University, Pomona ABSTRACT The purpose of the “Lake Powell’ case is to help students of Strategic Management learn the process of strategic management. This case can provide an opportunity for the students to learn strategy formulation and implementation along with some of the current issues such as “cooking the books”. Some sections of the Lake Powell case are real life situations, but all of the numbers and most of operations information are fictitious. Four experienced and knowledgeable men started Lake Powell Company with many opportunities and strength. However the company has lost money in the last five years. Students analyze, formulate and write an implementation of a strategy to save this company. Students then try to answer the following questions. What should be the proposed plan to Richmond for the Marina in order to have an effective, efficient, and profitable operation? How would it be funded? However the instructor will look at other scenarios and ask the students to figure out the four partner’s real goal. THE SETTING ake Powell is located between the borderline of Arizona and Utah along the Colorado River. It has a spectacular scenery view from Grand Canyon, vivid pink sunset, to a full night of stars. The possibilities L of fishing, skiing, or living in the houseboat on the brilliant blue water are other options to consider. It is nearly two thousand miles of shoreline, 96 major canyons, countless coves and winding waterways.

  • Lake Powell Could Become Dead Pool As Climate Change, Political
Lake Powell could become a ‘dead poolʼ as climate change, political wars and unabated growth drain its waters Bullfrog Marina • Ever since the Colorado River began filling Utahʼs Glen Canyon and its countless side canyons in 1963, conservationists have been calling for emptying the lake that now supports a recreation economy and power generation. Climate change, unbridled development and Western water politics are conspiring to gradually grant this wish. The reservoir has shed an average of 155 billion gallons a year over the past two decades, the result of drought-depleted river flows coupled with rising demands from powerful downstream water users. Without a change in how the Colorado River is managed, Lake Powell is headed toward becoming a “dead pool,” essentially useless as a reservoir while revealing a sandstone wonderland once thought drowned forever by humanityʼs insatiable desire to bend nature to its will. “Lake Powell is doomed,” says Gary Wockner, an author and scientist who heads the group Save the Colorado. “The sooner we accept that inevitability, the sooner we will find a permanent solution.” (Brian Maffly | The Salt Lake Tribune) Sediments deposited by the Colorado River into the bed of the now receded Lake Powell in Hite, Utah. The marina shown on Nov. 28, 2018, was the first place to lose water. Unless water managers curb releases from Glen Canyon Dam, the lake, within a couple of years, Wockner warns, could fall below the level at which its turbines can crank out power, effectively negating a reason for the dam in the first place. Utah water captains dispute Wocknerʼs dire forecast, but everyone agrees that the Colorado River is in crisis.

  • Chapter 3 Affected Environment
Chapter Three Chapter 3 Affected Environment 3.1 Introduction Chapter 3 describes environmental resources (e.g., hydrologic, biologic, and socioeconomic) of the Colorado River Basin that could be affected by the proposed federal action and the range of alternatives for implementing the proposed federal action described in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, respectively. The extent to which each specific resource may be impacted is discussed in Chapter 4. Section 3.2 presents a general discussion of the geographic scope within which potential effects of the alternatives are analyzed, and describes each of the potentially affected Colorado River reaches and water service areas. Subsequent sections in this chapter describe specific resources that may be potentially affected, such as water deliveries, recreation and biologic resources. Each resource section contains a discussion of one or more specific issues identified for consideration through scoping, public review and comment, and internal review (Chapter 1, Table 1.5-1). Final EIS – Colorado River Interim Guidelines for October 2007 3-2 Lower Basin Shortages and Coordinated Operations for Lake Powell and Lake Mead Chapter 3 Affected Environment 3.2 Geographic Scope The proposed federal action considers modified operations of Lake Powell and Lake Mead over a wide range of reservoir elevations as addressed by the four operational elements discussed in Section 1.2, i.e., shortage conditions, coordinated operations of Lake Powell and Lake Mead, storage and delivery of Colorado River system and non-system water, and the modified ISG.

  • Glen Canyon Guide 2011 Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Rainbow Bridge National Monument
National Park Service U.S. Department of the Interior Glen Canyon Guide 2011 Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Rainbow Bridge National Monument Gunsight Butte Lake Powell: Mussel Free Since 1963, a Collective Effort August 2010: a future visitor to Lake Powell wrote on a blog: “Any tips on how them. While Glen Canyon NRA now oversees every component of zebra mussel to get through inspection without needing decontamination?” The responses prevention inside the park, our partnerships are no less important. Every month included: “Answer the screening questions honestly…,” “If they have to decon the park meets with representatives from over twenty federal, state, city, and local your boat it’s no big deal,” “In, out and on my way in no time. Nice young man organizations to discuss efforts for keeping Lake Powell mussel free. As a group, doing a tough job dealing with impatient boaters. Get it inspected and washed if we have been able to accomplish much outside of the park, especially in public necessary. Better safe than infested,” “Decontamination is no biggie,” and “Way outreach. better to do it than take a chance.” The stakes are too high for it to simply be a park problem. Imagine wearing shoes As coordinator for zebra mussel prevention at Glen Canyon National Recreation on Powell’s soft, sandy beaches for fear of sharp mussel shells slicing into the Area (NRA) when these were written, I was ecstatic! The blog responses confirmed tender flesh of your feet; that as you look out over the lake in awe, your senses that three years of intense public outreach efforts to improve visitor understanding taking in your surroundings, the smell of rotting shellfish breaks your reverie; or to about the zebra mussel threat were working.
