Ms. Claude Jourdan tends the vines and makes the wines at her family estate in the Picpoul area near Mèze on the Mediterranean coast, halfway between Marseille and the Spanish frontier. From the winery and vineyards you can see the oyster beds in the shallow Mediterranean a few hundred meters away. This domaine-bottled version is a big step up from the cooperatives in the area, since the Jourdan family takes great care to limit yields and create the best Picpoul you can buy. This wine has won many awards in France and abroad. Bright, citrusy, yet mouth-fillingly rich, this wine has a great finish. For the red, I went somewhere warm, Sicily, for a wine with impact of flavor, but a style that can handle a chill. The 2019 Bacaro Nero D’Avola is perfect for a wide variety of foods. On the nose, fruity aromas with hints of thyme and rosemary. On the palate, ripe blackberry fruits, prunes and a little note of licorice and pepper, with firm tannins and medium acidity.

    WINE SCHOOL Turmoil, Strife and Wine: Reds From Lebanon Credit...Tony Cenicola/The New York Times By Eric Asimov • Oct. 8, 2020 With the pandemic and all the damage it has done to economies, businesses and personal relations, and the daily consequences of climate change, 2020 has been a difficult year for wine in general. But few places in the world have faced the onslaught of obstacles that have challenged the wine industry of Lebanon. The country has been in an economic and political crisis for several years, which made life difficult even before Covid-19. The huge and damaging explosion that rocked Beirut on Aug. 4 was the latest national trauma. The Lebanese people ordinarily consume about eight million bottles of wine annually, half of which are Lebanese and the rest imported, said Marc Hochar, whose family owns Chateau Musar, the leading Lebanese producer, which achieved renown for its wines under his father, Serge Hochar. Because the currency has been devalued, Mr. Hochar said, Lebanon can no longer afford imported goods, which has heightened the demand for locally produced wines. But the cost of materials required by the industry, like machinery, glass and labels, has gone up as well, and because of the economic conditions wine producers cannot raise their own prices to cover those expenses. Mr. Hochar called it “a very bizarre situation.” The Lebanese wine industry has had to demonstrate its resilience for decades, most famously navigating through 15 years of civil war.     Welcome I hope you are all eager and prepared to take a journey where few of you, I suspect, have been, vinously speaking! My interest in the Eastern Mediterranean stems from historical curiosity, a love of travel, and the knowledge that so much of I/we know of wine is predicated on a false understanding of where fine wine began.. Much of what we will cover today results from the research and travels for our book, Divine Vintage: Following the wine Trail from Genesis to the Modern Age. The middle east, particularly Turkey, Georgia and the Levant are the cradles of wine. While researching the book, it became very evident that today’s wines in the region represent the revival of millennia old traditions for quality, which were abandoned or forgotten in several places because of religious persecution, climate change, lost knowledge and poor economic/social conditions over the last 2 millennia. I contend that the resurgence of wine in places most people today have never considered (“I didn’t know they made wine in Washington?”) signifies a. economic resurgence; b. An effort to reconnect to the larger society and ‘civilization’ of the Mediterranean culture that evolved through Roman rule; c. reclamation by societies of their agricultural and socio-cultural heritage; and d. a portal by which those of us in the “west” can develop a better understanding and acceptance of those societies alienated from participation in the transition to modern cultural amenities and pleasures! Our journey today will hopefully pique your curiosity about the renaissance of fine wine-making where the grape was first domesticated and the technology of wine- growing was transmitted from across the Mediterranean basin.

More than 5000 years ago, the Phoenicians were making wine in Lebanon and trading it throughout the Mediterranean and Europe. The Temple of Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine, in Baalbek stands in testimony to the history of wine in the Bekaa valley. Moreover, it is believed that Christ’s first public miracle, where he transformed water into wine, occurred in Cana, South Lebanon. The number of wineries in Lebanon has increased sharply since the end of the Civil War, reaching 40 wineries in 2015, compared to only 5 after the war. 33% of the wine producers, or 13 wineries, are located in Zahle, due to the district’s suitable “teroire” for wine making.
