• For the Love of Spraying – Graffiti, Urban Art and Street Art in Munich
Page 1 For the love of spraying – Graffiti, urban art and street art in Munich (21 January 2018) Believe it or not, Munich was a pioneer of the German graffiti scene. As the graffiti wave arrived from New York and swept through Europe during the early ‘80s, it was Munich that rode that wave even before Berlin. Some of today’s leading figures in the international graffiti scene were immortalised by their legally-painted murals in what was, at the time, the largest Hall of Fame in Europe on the flea market grounds on Dachauer Straße – though the thrill of illegal spraying was also of course a driving force behind the Munich scene. By the late 1990s, Munich was considered a mecca for graffiti artists, alongside New York. Today, there are several sites in Munich displaying a wide variety of urban art, and they have long been considered a boon to the city. Over the years, legends of the street art scene such as BLU, ESCIF, Shepard Fairey and Mark Jenkins have discovered Munich for themselves and, in collaboration with the Positive Propaganda e.V. art association, have used art to breathe new life into public spaces in the city. The first German museum of urban art, MUCA (Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art), doesn't just showcase celebrated artists, but also offers a stage for experimental formats. A whole range of forums, events and guided tours bring these contemporary, quirky, energy-charged art forms to life in Munich. • Is Graffiti Art?
IS GRAFFITI ART? Russell M. Jones A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2007 Committee: Andrew Hershberger, Advisor Allie Terry ii ABSTRACT Dr. Andrew Hershberger, Advisor Illegal graffiti is disconnected from standard modes of visual production in fine art and design. The primary purpose of illegal graffiti for the graffiti writer is not the visual product, but “getting up.” Getting up involves writing or painting one’s name in as many places as possible for fame. The elements of risk, freedom and ritual unique to illegal graffiti serve to increase camaraderie among graffiti writers even as an individual’s fame in the graffiti subculture increases. When graffiti has moved from illegal locations to the legal arenas of fine art and advertising; risk, ritual and to some extent, camaraderie, has been lost in the translation. Illegal graffiti is often erroneously associated with criminal gangs. Legal modes of production using graffiti-style are problematic in the public eye as a result. I used primary and secondary interviews with graffiti writers in this thesis. My art historical approach differed from previous writers who have used mainly anthropological and popular culture methods to examine graffiti. First, I briefly addressed the extremely limited critical literature on graffiti. In the body of the thesis, I used interviews to examine the importance of getting up to graffiti writers compared to the relative unimportance of style and form in illegal graffiti. This analysis enabled me to demonstrate that illegal graffiti is not art.

Jörg has been working and exhibiting as an artist since the 90ies, before embarking on different careers in various industries and professions: Jörg has been a photographer, a designer, a newspaper editor, writer of short stories and fiction, founder and creative director of the design agency killakanu, CEO of Internet consultancy Icon Medialab Germany and a freelance business consultant for companies such as Brand Eins, Volkswagen or Universal Music. Since art was the first true love in his life, opening the art gallery heliumcowboy in 2003 marked the consolidation of his professional experiences, his curiosity and passion. However, in 2004, Jörg returned to creating his own art with the first exhibition, ,Alex Diamond‘s Strange Sofa‘. In the beginning, this was only a sideline project outside of the gallery, something to „keep my head clear, my hands busy and to stay sane“ (in his own words), not intended to becoming a full time vocation and most definitely not a represented artist of his own gallery. Slipping into different characters for each exhibition, in 2006 the person creating the artwork (Jörg) was deliberately taken away for an experimental and conceptual journey into celebrity culture. Raising the question wether an artist can be established without a face and vita, Jörg launched a long-term (2007-2010) project: ,Being Alex Diamond“.

Practice as Presence – Presence as Practice: Building a Framework for Collective Understanding of Contemporary Graffiti-Making Practices M.Sławińska Masters by Research 2017 Practice as Presence – Presence as Practice: Building a Framework for Collective Understanding of Contemporary Graffiti-Making Practices Marta Sławińska Thesis submitted for the candidacy of a Masters by Research Institute of Technology Sligo Academic Supervisors: Ann Geaney, Louis McManus, David Roberts Submitted to the Institute of Technology Sligo June 2016 I certify that the material which I submit for assessment leading to the award of Masters by Research is entirely my own work and has not been taken from others, save the extent that such work has been cited and acknowledged within the text of the study. Acknowledgments Completion of this project was possible thanks to support and trust of my academic supervisors, Ann Geaney, Louis McManus and David Roberts. Their expertise, advice and direction helped me to keep focused and motivated. Their constructive critique pushed me to achieve better results and their patience allowed me to experiment with my approach and gave me the time necessary to complete this project. I cannot thank them enough for their generosity! The work of other researchers, whose studies are referenced throughout this thesis, laid the foundations for my enquiry and helped in making sense of this complex and often confusing global phenomenon. I must also express my gratitude to all the graffitists who agreed to answer my questions, either in person or through email interviews. The ability to access information from remote locations was also crucial in this project, and therefore I would like to acknowledge the contributions of the many individuals who document graffiti and share their images, videos and interviews online, without their efforts the scope of this study would have been greatly limited.
